Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

I love how the most controversial thing I've ever said on MN in many years of posting is about people washing their arses Grin

Fnib · 24/03/2021 18:14

These threads make me laugh. I love them! Thank you MN! I'm wiser now (because I did go and Google - yuk!)
I think I live in a house that's clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy 💕
I sometimes wonder what the uber-hygienic posters think about sex. And kissing - I think in some cultures tongue kissing is deemed abhorrent.

Youcunnyfunt · 24/03/2021 18:14

Jesus Christ I feel properly sick reading this thread! Sucking someone's snot (I don't care if it's a baby!) Envy Envy Envy Fucking hell!

I'm not really into dogs massively but I don't see the issue with putting a bowl in a dishwasher... it's hotter than tap water.

Dry wiping - gross. I was brought up by a middle eastern mother, so I've always washed my bum. You can just use a wet tissue if you're caught short outside home. But I personally have a bum hose and love it - always squeaky clean, no skidders for me...

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/03/2021 18:15

Re washing hands after a pee.. do people mean just rinsing with water as opposed to scrubbing with soap? Or avoiding the sink altogether? Because I’d say the former is normal (I was certainly taught as a child to wash with water after a wee, soap after anything else) but the latter a bit gross.

LadyDanburysCane · 24/03/2021 18:16

I regularly holiday in France. I usually rent a small house or gite. I’ve NEVER had a bidet in any of the bathrooms. Usually the sink is a bit of a distance from the toilet too. They are often septic tanks and specify NO wipes or anything other than standard loo roll.

Youcunnyfunt · 24/03/2021 18:16

I guess that's why the UK goes crazy for toilet paper during a pandemic. Because you have to use a crazy amount of paper to actually get totally clean depending on how "firm" your stools are!

Fnib · 24/03/2021 18:18

I dry wipe. Never have skid marks. That's hilarious. Shower daily and wash at bed time. And quite often I'll have a bath in the evening, and DH hops in after me. I think the disgusting toad occasionally pees in the bath, which is why I go in first 😂

terrywynne · 24/03/2021 18:18

@belinda789

@ ViciousJackdaw Sootikins? How dare you! Do NOT repeat DO NOT google Sootikins. When I googled it I thought it must be made up because it was so nasty.
That's because it is made up (at least according to a thread instead on MN a while agol
MimiDaisy11 · 24/03/2021 18:19

Obsessive hygiene standards are bad for the environment and a way to develop allergies. Some of the things on here are just silly.

I do sort of see how washing after the toilet is cleaner than just using toilet paper, however, I've visited lots of countries in Asia, Europe and Africa and there was always toilet paper and I don't remember there always being bidets or something similar. I can only think of in Japan there being the little gadget of spraying water and hot air on the toilet.

BrintIg · 24/03/2021 18:21

Oh I remember one that I think is much worse than simply sharing bath water with a family member:

Peeing in the bath while you're in it! That was a thread a few weeks ago and was full of people saying they do it. That the ratio of pee to water is so small that it doesn't matter.

Strange that so many people thought that was totally normal on a site where apparently even peeing in the running water of a shower is controversial.

PferdeMerde · 24/03/2021 18:24

@Laytwir024

This is why other people think Brits are so disgusting!
What people?
shhsecretsquirrel · 24/03/2021 18:25

"A colleague I used to work with had a small water bottle in her hand bag, she filled it before going into a stall, and would empty it after washing her hands."

I'm sure this seems less hygienic than just using dry tissue paper 🤷‍♀️

"So, all of you who don't mind your dog/cat licking your plates before you wash them, are you all happy to eat out of their bowls ? Share and share alike "

Yeah if it had been cleaned / through the dishwasher no problemo. You eat in restaurants presumably? In various countries?

@mightbealittlebitmad you are my people

" you are right, sharing the bath water is sooo gross. I can beat that, I know people who get really intimate with their partners and actually put parts of their bodies inside their partner. Some also put their tongues in their partners mouths and do other things with their tongues and their partners bodies. They also do weird things like share a bed, I mean all these things must mean they pass on each other's germs. But hey as long as they don't share bath water."

This sounds a little far fetched. I can't imagine any of this every actually happening.

"I wash in hibiscrub,use disposable paper towels and have a salt enema after a jobbie
I had my fanny filled with jo malone candle melts"

Ok, you'll do. I hope those melts are sterile though. Perhaps you should pop them in the dishwasher.

Unfortunately I really do have to go off and google dragon butter and look up spooners corner....

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 18:26

I would like to know, which people too

CleansUpPenguinPoo · 24/03/2021 18:27

@Insomnia5

Them: you really let your dog sleep in your bed?? My dog:
Awww I miss my lovely Dally, crossed the rainbow bridge not long ago. He was a real snuggler, lived up to the 'velcro dog' name.
cricketmum84 · 24/03/2021 18:27

Wtf! Sucking snot out of a baby's nose???? Why? Just why?!!

Actually feel sick right now

Cattermole · 24/03/2021 18:30

Trying to work out the mechanics of peeing in the shower now.
I mean, do you squat, or do you just stand with your feet apart and pee down the plughole?
Does it not splash on your feet, or does that not matter if you're washing anyway?

  • house with no shower, so curious.
Fnib · 24/03/2021 18:31

Haha @Cattermole you just pee 😂😂

Crikeymalikey · 24/03/2021 18:31

Done 3/4... I draw the line at washing the animal bowls with the human dishes though... clearly I have standards Grin

BrintIg · 24/03/2021 18:31

@cricketmum84

Wtf! Sucking snot out of a baby's nose???? Why? Just why?!!

Because babies can't blow their nose. My baby would spend the entire night awake with a blocked nose (couldn't figure out to just breathe through his mouth) if I didn't clear it somehow.

When you're facing an entire night of being awake, on top of general mother-of-a-baby tiredness, you'll do anything.

But thankfully it's not even that gross anyway, because the contraptions you do it with consist of a tube with a chamber between your mouth and the babies nose that catches the snot. So it never goes anywhere near your mouth.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 18:31

@Cattermole Legs apart and pee, shower water wash it away.

Cattermole · 24/03/2021 18:35

Cool!
I am now more informed than I was!

WiganNorthWest · 24/03/2021 18:36

It’s not the sharing bath water I mind if someone clean has been in and I would share a bath with someone at the same time. I find it gross because I know my kids wee in the bath (but I’m sure it’s very diluted so not actually unclean) and I wash my hair and shave my legs in the bath so my water is always full of hair-the thought of someone else getting in a lukewarm hairy bath grossed me out. But I agree it’s not actually unclean/it does the job/is clean enough

eaglejulesk · 24/03/2021 18:41

I've learned from my time on MN that there are an awful lot of easily shocked/disgusted people in the UK. I also wonder how people of my generation, and those before me, have managed to live so long considering all our "unhygienic" ways.

Honestly, some of you need to get a grip!

SongSilkTrainspot · 24/03/2021 18:42

@Catwoman123

You could wet the tissue first then wipe which is what most people I know do and what I've taught my kids. Eww when thought if dry wiping Envy
Have you seen most people you know wipe their arses?
Sparechange · 24/03/2021 18:45

Op, where do you stand on sharing bath water with a dog..?
