AIBU to not want to eat rabbit on Easter Sunday?

Just because...well... the Easter Bunny Blush

IL's planning to get take away from local restaurant. Set menu, 4 courses. Main is rabbit. Not something I would choose, but I'd make the effort to eat it if served. However, I don't want to tell my DC we'll be eating rabbit at Easter. And would you expect your Dc to eat it?

I would tell and dc and get them excited to try new things. Ffs

Do you not worry about the poor Turkey at Christmas?? Hmm

AlexaShutUp · 23/03/2021 10:30

I don't eat meat anyway, so I don't have the view that some animals are ok whereas others are off limits, but even I can see that expecting children to eat the flipping Easter Bunny is some kind of really sick joke!Confused

And no, I wouldn't expect dc to eat it!

It’s more like eating Santa 🤢
HotToddyColdSauvignon · 23/03/2021 10:32

Oh for goodness sake.

Everyone knows the Easter bunny isn’t real anyone.
It’s the tooth fairy you’ve got to watch out for. Sneaky thing, climbing into peoples houses at night

FireBelliedToad · 23/03/2021 10:32

We don't eat Turkey at Christmas. And the Turkey doesn't bring the DC their Christmas presents Hmm It would be more like eating reindeer at Christmas.

Yanbu, surely there is a vegetarian option?

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 23/03/2021 10:33

Well I’ve eaten reindeer and I can confirm it’s delicious.

If they’re young enough to believe in the Easter bunny do you need to explain what kind of meat it is?

Just say - oooh look, meat and Potatoes

notdaddycool · 23/03/2021 10:35

That's funny, call it rabbit not bunny.

We once went to the Mess Christmas dinner and OH next morning told the children we'd eaten Rudolph, at Easter walking through a market he pointed to all the rabbits hanging up and said that's the Easter bunny. Luckily, they didn't believe much he said!

I don't understand this at all. If you eat meat, you are obviously accepting of the idea that animals form part of the food chain and part of your diet, and that animals have to be reared and be killed to meet this dietary need/choice. No judgement here on that front - I'm a meat eater myself. But I buy high welfare, locally reared meat and I accept the reality of my choice. I can't understand adults who eat meat but are then sentimental about certain animals over others. Or, in this case, sentimental about eating a certain animal on a certain day because it has an imaginary, cartoonish counterpart that has been bolted on, Hallmark-style, to the religious festival you are celebrating.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 23/03/2021 10:40

There is absolutely no choice for main other than rabbit? What's so great about this restaurant? I'd be saying I would prefer to order from somewhere with options. Is there no children's menu or is that also rabbit only? I can't imagine they'll get many takers!

millionmilesaway · 23/03/2021 10:42

I don't understand this either

If you eat meat, and perpetuate to your children that eating meat is okay, why be concerned about this?

Wakemeuuuup · 23/03/2021 10:42

I had rabbit a few months ago. I wasn't very nice

helpfulperson · 23/03/2021 10:44

Oh dear. I can understand where you are coming from. Rabbit at any other time of year, delicious. At easter I wouldn't. As mentioned it's like having reindeer for christmas.

katy1213 · 23/03/2021 10:44

Rabbit pie - delicious! Tell them it's lapin.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/03/2021 10:44

What else would they eat. Wee sheepy mares? Cute chooks? If you only eat things that don’t have ‘personalities’ then you won’t even get the children to eat Kevin the Carrot!

Rabbit is very nice. And this comes from a veggie (of pushing 40 years) who still fondly remembers mums amazing rabbit stew (and mash mmmmmm).

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/03/2021 10:44

Can't see that it makes any difference for the children whether it's Easter or not. They won't want to eat rabbit because they are cute fluffy pets.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/03/2021 10:45

That and the buckshot...

scochran · 23/03/2021 10:46

We used to have rabbit every Sunday as my uncle was a rabbit farmer. Horrible dark sheds full of the things. Probably tasted ok but really no different to eating any other animals. Which I no longer do .

AlexaShutUp · 23/03/2021 10:47

As a non-meat eater, I totally agree, but the OP isn't talking about adults, she is talking about children. I think a lot of children would balk at the idea of eating rabbit, especially on a day when there are pictures of cute bunnies everywhere!

It's exactly this kind of thing that encourages children to question the ethics of eating meat in general, so if you want to encourage your kids to go veggie, crack on and eat that bunny. Otherwise, I'd be looking for an alternative option!

Iwonder08 · 23/03/2021 10:51

How ridiculous, how rabbits better than sheep, cows, turkeys and chicken? If you are non-meat eater for whatever reason and you want to influence your children then it is your prerogative. Otherwise it is rather silly to decline rabbit just because it is Easter. You can easily explain that a common rabbit they are eating is an entirely different creature from a magic Easter bunny

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/03/2021 10:53

Isn’t the Easter bunny people-sized, wears some clothing and can speak? Different bunny altogether.

skirk64 · 23/03/2021 10:54

The rabbit you would be eating isn't the easter bunny though, it will be a rabbit that has already been caught and killed a few days beforehand. The actual easter bunny will still be alive, else how would he deliver the eggs on the Sunday?

Enb76 · 23/03/2021 10:55

Hmm - farmed rabbit is a bit of a dull choice of meat and wild rabbit is rarely offered. It's perfectly good in a pie but can be very dry and less interesting than chicken breast (if that is possible). That would be my reason not to choose it though, not because of some association with a rabbit that hands out chocolate or because rabbits are fluffy.

AdaColeman · 23/03/2021 10:56

Is it rabbit with mustard sauce? Delicious! Tell the children it's Lapin à la moutarde if they ask.
