AIBU to not want to eat rabbit on Easter Sunday?

Just because...well... the Easter Bunny Blush

IL's planning to get take away from local restaurant. Set menu, 4 courses. Main is rabbit. Not something I would choose, but I'd make the effort to eat it if served. However, I don't want to tell my DC we'll be eating rabbit at Easter. And would you expect your Dc to eat it?

I would have difficulty with this too, in fact my dh and kids would too. Why this restaurant and why such a limited menu? It's not going to be much fun if half of you aren't looking forward to the meal. Find and alternative.

Meat is meat. As long as its ethically sourced, then what's the issue? I'm a life long vegetarian so the only rabbit I'll be eating will be made by Lindt. My children will happily eat all local game - venison, rabbit, pheasant.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/03/2021 11:02

One of my children would eat it, one wouldn't. The one who wouldn't only eats small amounts of meat anyway. (Taste rather than ethics).

I agree children should know where meat comes from. But as a consequence of that, we have to accept they may not want to eat it.

FireBelliedToad · 23/03/2021 11:03

Tell them it's lapin.
That won't work, they're bilingual.

They're old enough to want to know what they're eating but still young enough to believe in Santa and the Easter bunny. They're at the age where they're beginning to question it.

I'm a meat eater myself. But I buy high welfare, locally reared meat and I accept the reality of my choice.
We try to as well. From our local shop this means we eat beef, pork, chicken and fish. I've never seen high welfare rabbit. I've also never looked for it, it's not something I was brought up eating so it's not on my radar of go-to meals. DH says he loved it as a child, but has never cooked it for the DC. They have never had rabbit before.

I don’t believe in eating any animal at any time, so no argument from me! Pick up a veggie alternative you can bung in the oven to have alongside and enjoy your lunch 🥗

Cadent · 23/03/2021 11:06

I agree it might not be nice for kids, but I agree with pp. My housemate is happy to eat meat but wanted me to wash it as it's icky Hmm, can't be doing that with nonsense.

If you can usually put the carcass in your mouth then you can't really act squeamish about not eating the carcass on certain days.

PenfoldPenny · 23/03/2021 11:10

If you are happy to eat meat its entirely unreasonable to be dithering about eating rabbit just because rabbits are cute and furry.

merryhouse · 23/03/2021 11:11

We ate venison on Boxing Day for years (and yes, they knew exactly what it was). We've also had rabbit a few times.

Have your children read the Narnia books? There's a very big difference between eating ordinary meat and eating one of the Talking animals (specifically discussed in The Silver Chair, when they hear the giants discussing the conversation with the stag before it was killed). Same difference between ordinary rabbits and the Easter Bunny.

candlemasbells · 23/03/2021 11:11

Its probably wild rabbit and in my experience not very nice tasting.

AlexaShutUp · 23/03/2021 11:12

For those meat eaters who are saying meat is meat, I'm curious...would you be happy to eat dog if it was served up

Dontyouwantme · 23/03/2021 11:13

Yanbu Sad

Lockheart · 23/03/2021 11:13

Rabbit's actually pretty nice IMO.

I don't know why things like pigeon and rabbit (plentiful and cheap) have gone out of fashion to the extent that they have.

Dontbeme · 23/03/2021 11:13

I can't understand adults who eat meat but are then sentimental about certain animals over others

That is exactly what I told our German shepherd Gus, rip.

jessstan2 · 23/03/2021 11:14

Nobody minds eating lamb at Easter and little lambs are sweet, you see pics of them all over Easter cards. Why not rabbit? My only concern would be to be sure it was not factory farmed, I have for many years only bought organic, responsibly sourced meat and poultry so I would check on that.

Enjoy.

AlexaShutUp · 23/03/2021 11:16

Oops, posted too soon. That was supposed to say would you eat dog if it was served up overseas?

Not being critical either way, I'm genuinely just curious. I think it's quite natural to be more squeamish about eating some animals than others tbh. It isn't logical, but then, we aren't always logical, are we?

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 23/03/2021 11:18

You’re being obtuse OP, fine, if the kids understand French, don’t call it lapin, call it Zec then (Bosnian)

eddiemairswife · 23/03/2021 11:18

I can remember having rabbit stew and rabbit pie as a child during the war. Both delicious.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/03/2021 11:26

I can see where you’re coming from!

My dc is 7 and still seems to refer to all meat (and fish!) as chicken so you may have a chance of just calling it meat.

I’m not a big fan of the taste of rabbit either.

Mind you - lamb is traditionally for Easter lunch, but I’m not sure dc ever think about the little lambs in the fields.

I often think I should be veggie but it’s just laziness that I don’t!

Magicpaintbrush · 23/03/2021 11:29

Easter bunny aside, in my experience children will run a mile at the thought of eating rabbit. It may 'be the same as any other meat' but not to children it isn't, I doubt they will want to eat rabbit regardless of whether it's Easter or not.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 23/03/2021 11:31

No I'd tell them.
I eat meat not a massive meat eater but I wouldn't touch rabbit.
I just don't think it'd be very nice. Same as duck I won't eat that either it smells grim.

GraduallyWatermelon · 23/03/2021 11:32

They're old enough to want to know what they're eating but still young enough to believe in Santa and the Easter bunny.

Id just let them choose then, there must be a veggie option.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/03/2021 11:33

rabbit is delicious... but maybe not at easter if they believe in the easter bunny.

AuntieMarys · 23/03/2021 11:34

We ate our pet rabbit in the 60s

backinthebox · 23/03/2021 11:37

Tell them it's lapin. That won't work, they're bilingual.

🤣🤣 Tell them it’s conill then - they probably don’t speak Catalan yet. Or just serve up spring lamb and hope they don’t make the connection between the cute fluffy things at the petting farm and what’s on the table. Or go veggie.

RunningFromInsanity · 23/03/2021 11:38

I don’t eat rabbit because I have pet rabbits

I eat beef because I don’t have pet cows

I think it’s a pretty sick joke to make children eat rabbit, particularly at Easter.
