Croydon flats - on the news

Blinkinblimey · 22/03/2021 22:19

I just saw a family in sopping wet flats where they were at risk of electrocution.

Fucking horrendous. You wouldn’t want to visit let alone live there.

How do housing teams allow this to happen? It really shouldn’t take the 10 o’ clock news to highlight appalling living conditions.

Feel so sad and angry.

No, I'm in London.

My council was near bankruptcy before lockdown, is that the case for Shropshire?

JackieTheFart · 23/03/2021 11:00

That was truly shocking. I don’t know what I was expecting but that was not it. Seriously it made me cry, I can’t imagine how it feels to live there.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/03/2021 11:06

This is absolutely awful. Heartbreaking.

Does anyone know these people? I keep thinking about that woman and her children - is there anything crowd funding wise to get her moved?

thecatandthevicar · 23/03/2021 11:19

I'd rather put my kids in a caravan than letting them in a hell hole like that.

Seriously, what kind of comment is this?

Do you think that poor woman moved in to the flat when it was that bad? Do you think she can afford a caravan? Do you think she has a choice?

AcornAutumn · 23/03/2021 11:26

I'm sure residents would have taken that option too.

Shirley, the article says that they have been moved.

there's always a choice.

I said caravan because it's one of the cheapest options around Norwood if you have to stay local, but there are others. Not pleasant, but I just wouldn't leave my kids in a place full of mould, even if we end up in a tiny one room.

Walkingtheplank · 23/03/2021 12:12

Have some compassion 'thecatandthevicar'.
Not everyone has the capacity to make choices.
There could be many reasons why she couldn't leave, including losing her right to a council home.
There no reasons for the Council to allow this to happen.

Matrottinetteelectrique · 23/03/2021 12:14

I’m racking my brains to think where in South Norwood you could live in a caravan even if you could afford one - South Norwood Country Park? No - or maybe Woodside Green? No not there either.

Meanwhile, in the real world...

I didn't mean in central Norwood Hmm

but in the real world you wouldn't advise someone to relocate to Wales to get a dirt cheap apartments, and rentals in Croydon and greater London are not cheap.

How on earth would that woman get enough money for a deposit on a caravan?

How about her children’s schools? How does she get a job near this caravan park?

How about it is her landlord’s responsibility (ie the council) to ensure her home is fit for purpose and safe? Nice lot of victim blaming going on here

AcornAutumn · 23/03/2021 12:30

Well, we can see what sort of thing these people are up against in trying to get help.

That’s absolutely heart breaking. Those poor people - poor children! I’ve no idea what I’d do in that situation but imagine seeing your children becoming sick because of where they’re living.

I live in Croydon- my sons school address is South Norwood. Just brings it home. It’s apparently not the same constituency as I live in but will write to my MP.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/03/2021 13:03

So much of Croydon is so affluent too, there’s no need for the council to be bankrupt and failing people like this.

abstractzebra · 23/03/2021 13:05

@thecatandthevicar
Yes because people who are absolutely on their knees dealing with horrible situations are really in the best place to go all guns blazing to resolve the situation 🙄
Besides, the resolution was to ensure that the council made the property that they pay rent for was brought up to standard and to be made safe.

Very good point. Easily forgotten
Blinkinblimey · 23/03/2021 13:32

I think I these tenants have had enough crap without being the subject of unhelpful comments.

The Croydon is affluent is a shock to me after watching tv last night @GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing
I just assumed it was awful but obviously that idea is illogical. Sounds like it’s time the council pulled their socks up and get the families affected some decent local housing.
