To not want to leave baby in car?

DH and i did the shopping the other day and we've been arguing about this since.

We live at the top end of a cul-de-sac.. DH parked across the end of the drive way infront of a row of bollards that stop cars from coming through the Alleyway at the end of it from the street that runs passed ours.

To get the car out, you'd have to reverse it out.

However, DH still thinks its perfectly ok to leave the car running with our 14mo son in it while we both bring the shopping in.

I refused to leave the car while the key was still in the ignition because anyone could have come down the alley and stolen the car.. but DH thinks i was just being stupid.

You are NOT being unreasonable. It's happened to people before.

islandofsodor · 08/11/2007 12:44

You never, ever leave your key in the car whether there is a baby in it or not.

Actually isn;t it illegal to leave a car engine running with no-one in it.

RubySlippers · 08/11/2007 12:44

i wouldn't leave the keys in my car, with the engine running with or without a baby in there

you may as well tape a sign to the windscreeen saying "steal me now"

EmsMum · 08/11/2007 12:46

No, YANBU.

I wouldn't leave a car running with the keys in even without a baby in it. If someone did steal it you would be totally uninsured.

With a baby (or any child) in it.... no way!

toomanyballs · 08/11/2007 12:48

If your car is stolen with the keys in it your insurance will be invalid.

Don't think that leaving a child in a car parked at the end of drive whilst you go in and out is unreasonable but to leave keys and engine running is.

woodenchair · 08/11/2007 17:34

to not want to leave your child in an unattended running car? what planet is he on? things like this make me cross!

yanbu

mamazon · 08/11/2007 17:43

i wouldnt leave the car like that let alone leave my child in it as well

NAB3littlemonkeys · 08/11/2007 17:48

Your DH is being an idiot.

YANBU.

cazboldy · 08/11/2007 17:49

yanbu [shocked] that he thinks this would be ok!

cazboldy · 08/11/2007 17:50

even

AnnaPx · 08/11/2007 18:04

Also there's a danger it could slip into gear/you knock it accidentally into gear and have an accident. that you're having to have this argument with him.

fruitymum · 08/11/2007 18:10

Dh is a twit!

tissy · 08/11/2007 18:12

don't understand why dh doesn't park the car properly, take keys out of ignition and put them in his pocket, and then unload car of baby and shopping. Why leave the engine running? Apart from anything else, what a waste of fuel!

lomond · 08/11/2007 18:15

YANBU! What we do is take dd into the house and the other person goes back and forth to carry the bags in.

Emprexia · 09/11/2007 10:03

tissy - because he was just dropping the shopping off and then going to get dinner while i put it away.

And because of the way our lovely neighbours park. We always have to leave the car there while we get shopping in, usually DS comes straight out, but he was going with DH to fetch dinner.

LilRedWG · 09/11/2007 10:05

YANBU - your DH is. Point out to him that not only does he risk losing DS but his car wouldn't be covered by insurance either.

MrsBadger · 09/11/2007 10:10

We have a similar problem and have to park a long way from the house.

If I'm by myself I take dd out first and put her down indoors, then go back for the shopping, my reasoning being a) someone is more likely to steal the car than they are to break into the house, and b) once dd is indoors she is out of sight of passersby.
I always take the keys out of the car (though I don't always lock it) when ferrying back and forth.

MrsBadger · 09/11/2007 10:11

though reading your situation more carefully, the most sensible thing would have been for dh to stay in the car with ds and you go out to get the shopping in.

mm22bys · 09/11/2007 13:12

Of course YAN(BU).

Take the baby inside first, then get your shopping (and hope your house with the baby inside doesn't burn down in the fire in the meantime...)
