To think that the EU have done more to endorse Brexit in the last 2 weeks than the UK managed in nearly 5 years

I’ll start by saying I’ve never thought Brexit was in the long term interest of the UK and still don’t

But dear God, the EU’s behaviour over vaccinations and, in particular, the blatant prejudice around the Astra Zeneca vaccine has done more to endorse the UK leaving than anything that has been said in the UK before, during and after the vote

Where can we find the life saving vaccine that Ireland has produced? Dunnes stores afaik.

HotCrossBumsticks · 22/03/2021 13:16

compare to a little backwater like Ireland

That "little backwater" has an economy that grew in the last year, and boasts global industry and services. The UK on the other hand is heading down the toilet fast with its self inflicted pain of Brexit and looking at years of austerity.

Sayamino · 22/03/2021 13:16

@Cailleach1

No you’re right, AZ is just the means by which to conduct political warfare.

usuallydormant · 22/03/2021 13:18

isalonghaul, well, an Irish scientist is co-lead of the Oxford team. That's a nice contribution no?

And a major reason that the EU were slower than the UK or US is that it had to get agreement from 27 nations and did the joint procurement exercise so that smaller nations like Ireland had some hope of getting vaccines and it wasn't all hoovered up by the bigger nations. A disadvantage if you are a big nation, not for the smaller ones.

Itsalonghaul · 22/03/2021 13:19

I am so glad we are out. I had my vaccine yesterday. I am grateful to everyone in the UK from the scientists that developed this amazing vaccine, the volunteers, the doctors, the lovely people that welcomed us at the centre. I am incredibly proud of everyone!

I am not going to let the EU sour grapes ruin this time for us. I can't wait for dinner out with friends on the 29th, and drinks in the bar on the 12th, and a holiday to boot. We are over the worst, and I don't think we should get dragged down by the bitterness of the EU.
We have every reason to feel happy and hopeful. What others do, don't do, it really is up to them. We should consider restricting travel to prevent variants and get on enjoy life!

usuallydormant · 22/03/2021 13:21

@donewithitalltodayandxmas yes it was a stupid move to consider but it wasn't made Unlike the unilateral actions currently being taken by HMG. Is the legal action not being covered in the UK press then? wonder why that is.....

@Itsalonghaul sounds good. What’s the U.K. equivalent of chanting ‘U S A - U S A’ as I feel that’s all that missing from your post!! 😂😂

Itsalonghaul · 22/03/2021 13:54

Well I can definitely burst into song if you want me to! emerald

"Rule Britannia" while waving a Union Jack I expect

Itsalonghaul · 22/03/2021 13:55

I wouldn't say I had the Irish knack for singing though, I am not sure the windows around here are up to it but I can give it a go!

EpiphanySoul1 · 22/03/2021 14:01

@Itsalonghaul don’t forget to thank the co lead of the team who created the AZ - they were born and educated in that ‘backwater’ you disparaged earlier!

EpiphanySoul1 · 22/03/2021 14:02

@LexMitior But that is now Ireland’s very real problem - Britain may or may not care.

Just wow. Northern Ireland is part of the U.K. yet Britain ‘May or may not care’ ??

NI is part of Britain! What I mean is that due to the settlement of Brexit, the usual levers for cooperation have gone.

It would be a great mistake to assume that Anglo Irish relations haven’t been affected. They have. And Britain is moving away from EU requirements at speed. There is some fantasy we are going to rejoin; absolutely not and all cooperation has to be considered in that light.

They face 100s of '000s of deaths and not enough vaccine.
But you go out and celebrate, whilst the vulnerable are buried a handful of miles away and we carrying on vaccinating 20yo's for whom Cv is either nothing or a slight cold.

Personally? i won't celebrate until CV is consigned to history & the only way to do that is through genuine cooperation, not the UK's version of it.

Rejoin? that was never ever going to happen even pre CV.

We are moving away from cooperation with Europe at speed, very sad.

EpiphanySoul1 · 22/03/2021 14:15

@LexMitior Britain have an obligation to Northern Ireland to cooperate. They can’t just throw them out on their own and throw a tantrum. They knew going into Brexit that they shared a land border with the EU. It’s not new information. Move away from EU requirements that’s fine! But the obligation to NI and by extension Ireland remains.

EpiphanySoul1 · 22/03/2021 14:15

@jasjas1973 well said.

Itsalonghaul · 22/03/2021 14:21

So you are going to wait until everyone in the world is vaccinated before going out? You have a very very long wait if we consider the EU's contribution to Covax is anything to go by jas!

QuentinInQuarantino · 22/03/2021 14:23

@Itsalonghaul

The Kent variant was discovered in the UK thanks to our world class genomics facility, it could have come from literally anywhere! You sound very ill informed to be honest, and it is no wonder you are where you are.
Are you one of those people who thinks it must have come from a refugee in a dingy from Calais because it couldn't possibly be from a Kentish person. There was some very unpalatable comments doing the rounds (I'm from Kent.)

NI is part of Britain

It's part of the UK not GB.
GB is the largest island in the UK.

Sorry to be pedantic, as you were!

We aren’t going to do that to NI. They are part of the UK.

However, this does not include the ROI who are now right in the middle between the UK and EU. That’s the issue because where there would have been quite a lot of common interest economically, there will be less and less. This is natural. Our legal systems will be diverging - so much comes from that. Ireland and Britain have always had that link in law. It has been severed.

This is just reflects reality.

I don’t find it sad. There are upsides legally to not being in the EU and Britain should take full advantage, not spend its time trying to mitigate or moderate the EU approach.

Itsalonghaul · 22/03/2021 14:29

It is interesting to note the anti British sentiment on here from the Irish. Really not very happy that this all worked out for the UK. Annoyed that we are not paying out penance for leaving the EU protection racket, and instead seem to be enjoying life on the outside. Jesus wept.
You are more indoctrinated than I thought. Fully signed up to the EU cult.
