To ask how often you replace your carpets?

Had a discussion with soon to be DH about whether we’d like hardwood flooring or carpets upon moving in. He said he prefers carpet and I agreed that I like it but requires more upkeep, to which he said you replace them every couple or three years. To me that seems excessive but that’s how often his family replaced theirs because he said DM got sick of things easily. We’ve always had hardwood floors so I’m not overly familiar, but what is the average lifespan of a carpet?

@Bouncebacker

I’m currently dealing with a hideous carpet moth infestation in our house. As soon as lockdown lifts I’m replacing the bedroom carpets with synthetic, and hard floor everywhere else. It’s going to cost a fortune but the moths are awful!
We are replacing our upstairs carpets with synthetic for the same reason. I would love to get a wool berber carpet but I can't be doing with the moths and other creepies eating it. We put an 80/20 carpet with moth proofing in the large living room because the synthetics looked nasty in the style we wanted. I can't risk it in the rest of the house.

Carpets have been down since we had work on the house 15 years ago; I can't see a reason to change them for years to come.
We have changed one carpet on the landing after a flood .

Our carpets are 30+ years old. Living room one needs replacing now but I can't be arsed until DS is a little bit older.

Regarding paint, he said they would also paint approx every summer because they like to change it, and sofa replaced every 3-4 years! Shock We had better win the lottery lol!
So they threw out a Sofa after 3-4 years.

Another conversation but ours are over 10 years' old. Sofa is getting a bit unsupportive but we hope to move at some point
