To ask how often you replace your carpets?

Had a discussion with soon to be DH about whether we’d like hardwood flooring or carpets upon moving in. He said he prefers carpet and I agreed that I like it but requires more upkeep, to which he said you replace them every couple or three years. To me that seems excessive but that’s how often his family replaced theirs because he said DM got sick of things easily. We’ve always had hardwood floors so I’m not overly familiar, but what is the average lifespan of a carpet?

We bought cheap when we moved here as the kids were little- they’ve been down 10 years and look tatty now but mostly due to spills over the years. Downstairs is wood flooring- I think a living room carpet off probably replace every 10 years

Lovelydovey · 21/03/2021 15:26

10+ years dependent on which room it’s in and whether you wear shoes on it (we don’t).

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 21/03/2021 15:27

Changing carpets every 2-3 years is appalling for the environment.
Not sure how long ours have been down as they were here when we bought the house 4 years ago. They certainly weren’t new when we moved in, but they’re still in excellent condition.

Vomadetroit · 21/03/2021 15:29

As long as it looks clean and good quality still, we’ll keep it for years and years!
Wtf is he doing to the carpet that he thinks it needs replacing every 2-3 years? Mowing it?

VettiyaIruken · 21/03/2021 16:04

My husband insists on cream so, yeah, a LOT!!
Every 3 years or so.

shinynewapple21 · 21/03/2021 16:06

All the carpets in our house have been down since we got married 25 years ago! Vinyl floorings in the kitchen and bathroom have been replaced a few times .

We plan to replace our living room carpet later this year as it is looking rather tired now and have had the main part covered by a rug for a few years now.

We get our carpets and sofa professionally cleaned most years .

ThePricklySheep · 21/03/2021 16:07

Have you ever got them professionally cleaned? Grin
shinynewapple21 · 21/03/2021 16:08

To clarify the carpets were all new which we put down after moving in , we didn't inherit them .

The wastage and environmental impact of this makes me wince.

We have cream carpets. We have them professionally cleaned every year. They’re at least 10 years old and in fantastic condition.

Midlifephoenix · 21/03/2021 16:10

Depends on room. My young kids i replaced after five years, mine could do with bring replaced after 8, other rooms doing fine maybe in another couple years.
If you are adults only then 10-15 years, if with rambunctious kids and dogs sooner.
I like wood downstairs carpet upstairs.

Sammiesnake · 21/03/2021 16:13

15 years for a carpet! Blimey, they must look awful 😂 we replace ours when they get tired, every 5-10 years but it depends on the carpet and where it is (halls/ stairways more often)

isseys4xmastinselcats · 21/03/2021 16:14

we are just about to replace the carpet and kitchen flooring we bought this house 18 months ago and the flooring was probably put down in the mid 1980s, the front room carpet is axminster but florid 80s pattern but is actually still in good condition for its age

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/03/2021 16:18

Depends on the quality, we have axminster which has been down 10 yrs and looks brand new, however, you do pay three- four times more than you would do for an average quality carpet think £80 per sq meter. It cleans brilliantly too and is kind to the environment.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/03/2021 16:19

Why? It only looks awful if it is a cheap carpet.
SciFiScream · 21/03/2021 16:21

We replaced ours after 10 years but we'd bought cheap carpets and I'd erm, melted one of them! It was hidden by a rug.

Hopefully this carpet will last us 15-20 years (we bought a better quality of carpet and underlay).

I think if we lived somewhere warmer we'd have hard wood floors downstairs and carpet upstairs.

Even with carpet we need warm slippers in winter!

PinkiOcelot · 21/03/2021 16:29

We’ve just took up our carpet and replaced it with wood flooring- I’m regretting it already. Anyway the carpet was about 16 years old. It was Axminster and in really good condition in most places, apart from where it had been ruined by pets!

muddyford · 21/03/2021 16:37

In our last house we had a woollen carpet which was 17 years old when we moved. Several viewers asked if we had recently recarpeted. Here, we put a fairly expensive acrylic one down three and a half years ago and it looks absolute rubbish. We were told it would be easy to clean. We weren't told it would get dirty more easily too.

toconclude · 21/03/2021 16:40

Wooden floors all the way here. 13 years and counting.

Ideasplease322 · 21/03/2021 16:42

I need to replace my carpets now. Living room gets a lot of traffic and the carpet is a not worn and stained. It’s ten years old. Stair carpet is also showing wear, it’s 15 up years old.

What on earth does he do to carpets that they need replaced this frequently!

Ideasplease322 · 21/03/2021 16:42

I love carpets though, wooden flors can be very noisy.

Gobbycop · 21/03/2021 16:43

When you can see floorboards.

Gertie75 · 21/03/2021 16:43

Ours have been down 8 years and are still fine, the only flooring I've ever got rid of after a couple of years was wooden.

We laid it when it was in fashion about 10 years ago and realised immediately it was a big mistake, it was noisy, cold, a pain to clean and the dog hated it.
I like to just run the vac over the carpet but with wood I had to sweep, mop and dry before we could step on it.

Whathappenedtothelego · 21/03/2021 16:43

Our carpets are 16 years old and are looking a bit tatty in a few places like the bottom of the stairs.

They are in my head as a "within the next 5 years" job.

Same here, only it's more like 20 years. I hate carpets, I can't stand the thought of what would be lurking in the pile of an elderly carpet.
knittingaddict · 21/03/2021 16:44

Most of our house still has the original carpets fro when we moved in 13 years ago and they were by no means new then. We replaced the lounge carpet when we had an extension and will be replacing the rest of the house soon. So every 15 years or so.

Having carpets fitted in a house you live in is a major pain in the bum. His family are nuts, and wasteful.
