To ask how often you replace your carpets?

Had a discussion with soon to be DH about whether we’d like hardwood flooring or carpets upon moving in. He said he prefers carpet and I agreed that I like it but requires more upkeep, to which he said you replace them every couple or three years. To me that seems excessive but that’s how often his family replaced theirs because he said DM got sick of things easily. We’ve always had hardwood floors so I’m not overly familiar, but what is the average lifespan of a carpet?

I’ve never heard of anyone who does this. What a crazy waste of money.

BaronessBomburst · 21/03/2021 16:46

The carpet in my great aunt's sitting room had been down over 100 years and has seen four generations of children. It's a wool carpet and has been cleaned and looked after. It still looks good!
If you like dark beige carpet...... Grin

Kazkepper123 · 21/03/2021 16:46

Buy a Henry wet/dry and you can clean the carpets on a regular basis.

TomHardyAndMe · 21/03/2021 16:47

Only one carpet in this house is less than 20 years old (since the house was built). The one we had fitted in an extension we built is 11 years old.

We’ve replaced the living room one with hardwood floor, and all the bathrooms with slate tiles.

DH’s parents’ carpets are original too. They’ve lived in their house for 46 years!

wonkylegs · 21/03/2021 16:55

My hall carpet is about 20yrs old and it's still looks great and I'd say as a pale carpet in a heavy trafficked area that's going to be the most often replaced.
I don't insist that shoes are taken off inside by guests either.
I have a vax carpet washer for when the kids / DH have trapsed mud in or been sick on it.
A decent carpet will clean ok and last.
Our playroom carpet is beige and was cheap but even that's been in 8yrs and although it could do with a lego removal procedure it's lasted excellently.

My husband insists on cream so, yeah, a LOT!!
Every 3 years or so.

Have you ever got them professionally cleaned?

Yup. It made the living room absolutely stink! We pulled it up and it had start rotting underneath it had been left far too damp I assume.

It's bloody ridiculous. I've been arguing for years for a darker living room carpet 🙄. Upstairs is grey and that looks great. But nooo cream it must be because the living room is so dark. Or something. It's stupid. 😁

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2021 17:52

Gosh we moved in here seven years ago and all of upstairs and the stairs is cream carpet. What’s clearly a very expensive woollen carpet. We have the carpets cleaned regularly. I’ve no idea how longs irs been down but at least ten to fifteen years I think and honestly it looks new, no wear and tear at all.

That’s really unusual. We have ours professionally cleaned. The machine is huge, it’s this one, and it’s pretty much dry when they complete as it’s so powerful, it sucks all the water out, that’s what makes them clean. Sounds like you had a cowboy in.

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2021 17:55

Sorry and just to add context, the machine is about the same size as an under counter fridge,

Ours are the same. Cream carpets, not put in by us, obviously expensive and good quality. They are at least 10 years old, we have them cleaned regularly and they’re still in excellent condition despite having young children. I can’t see any reason why a 15 year old carpet would look awful, unless it was a crap carpet to start with.

Oh wow that's a beast! No, it didn't look anything like that! Just a normal carpet cleaner. We paid sixty quid I think it was. Just the living room. It was so bad we said never again!
WeAllHaveWings · 21/03/2021 18:29

Current one is around 10 years old.

Glittertwins · 21/03/2021 18:36

Our last 3 that we inherited from the house purchase 17 years ago were replaced in September. No way could I face doing them all regularly, it's a right faff clearing rooms! We got a rug doctor and clean them ourselves as well as having them done professionally every so often

Garlia · 21/03/2021 18:52

Ours is 15 years old and well past it's best, have just ordered new carpets for throughout the house and am overly excited!

RaininSummer · 21/03/2021 18:59

My carpet lasted about 20 years. I hope the replacement will too though I will probably move when it's about 10.

woodhill · 21/03/2021 19:03

Yes, good quality carpet lasts a long time.

The wood floors can get shabby and dented.

Letseatgrandma · 21/03/2021 19:04

15 years minimum!

People who replace their carpet that often are probably the sort that replace their pillows every year and mascara every 2 months like magazines say you should!

FangsForTheMemory · 21/03/2021 19:08

The reason I haven't got carpet is the scuzz. I'd expect a carpet to last 20 years but because that's 20 years of ingrained filth, I've got hard floors and (mostly) washable rugs.

TeenMinusTests · 21/03/2021 19:10

Our carpets are 25years old and going strong.
Which in a way is a shame as we didn't really know what we were doing when we bought them and got fobbed off with low quality underlay so the flooring isn't as soft underfoot as I would like.

Listener2021 · 21/03/2021 19:12

We bought wool 22 years ago, it was a big expense at the time, but still looks very good. We do get it cleaned every year or so. It's a bit faded as you see when you move the sofas but otherwise fine.

Planty13 · 21/03/2021 19:14

I’ve only had my carpet two years and it looks so tatty Sad we have no shoes on the house and clean it often but it almost looks bobbly!? It wasn’t the cheapest but definitely on the lower end of the range. So we’ll be getting laminate when we can afford it.

woodhill · 21/03/2021 19:17

I think 80/20 wool is the secret

dudsville · 21/03/2021 19:18

You need to get a carpet cleaner in once a year or so. We do end of summer, once the time of constantly open doors has passed, but end of winter is good too. The carpet stays for it's life expectancy or until damaged (I painted a carpet once by accident).

piglet81 · 21/03/2021 19:20

We had our house recarpeted when we bought it 7 years ago (it had been a student house and the whole place was pretty grotty. I was definitely not willing to let a baby roll around on the previous carpets!). Unfortunately could only afford fairly cheap stuff and we’ve had a lot of building work done since then so some of it is trashed now. I think we’ll replace it again when we get to 10 years, but go for better quality.

beela · 21/03/2021 19:31

We've just replaced ours in the downstairs roons after 15 years. It wasn't terrible, but we moved a fire place so there was a big gap.

If you buy a decent carpet, with good underlay, and look after it then there is no reason it won't last 10 years plus.
