Aibu to put dog dishes in dishwasher

This is my first post so I hope I’ve put it in the right place. So. Like everyone else, I have got a lockdown puppy. Am a first time dog owner and have been super lucky as it’s been just great, especially for the children. However am not a mad doggy person and would never let it lick my face or whatever. But I find myself putting dog’s empty plate in dishwasher at night with the human plates. Dog has separate dish - does not eat off human plates and is obviously wormed and flead etc. Genuine question - Is this normal (reasonable) or totally (unreasonable) gross? I fear lockdown has robbed me of normal social skills and this may be the first step to totally savagery .

@SchrodingersImmigrant

I gotta say the raw meat and shelfish and fish specks would worry me more...

A speck isn’t enough to make you ill. Plus by the time it’s sat on a dry plate for a day, most bacteria will have died. Not very nice to think, but reassuring.
Being steamed in a dishwasher is more hygienic than hand washing. Google if you like, there are lots of references.

@ThePricklySheep I know. I see the quote in mine didn't show🙈
It was in reply to poop specs.

@Lemmeout

This is exactly why I do not eat or drink at peoples house when they have animals inside. To me it’s grim. I care not what you do for yourself.

Do you not understand what a dishwasher does?

Yes absolutely ok. My dog licks everything as he's a retriever and it's his job, so everything in the house is covered with his germs anyway Grin. I don't wash his dishes every night though, once a week is fine but we probably have lower standards than most MNetter s. The water bowl gets done less frequently because he likes it when the water has been in there for a few days. He's offended by clean water in clean water bowls 🤦‍♀️

He's not allowed to lick off plates though - but that's only because he's diabetic so it's not good for him. If he wasn't.......

Gross, just gross. But then there are people who let their dogs get in their beds and sit on other soft furnishings. So many will say it’s fine.

Yes I do, my dog is raw fed so her bowl is put in the dishwasher straight after she's had her dinner every day. My husband was grossed out at first but I pointed out that he doesn't bat an eye when other things go in that have had raw meat on, like knives, chopping board etc.

It is alright to use dishwasher so long as you run it on a 60C hot cycle. Less than 60C and you risk transmission of infectious bacteria from dog saliva to form a bio film on your dishes and could possibly sicken you/your family. Especially anyone with compromised immune system. 60C is what veterinarians recommend for safe washing temperature. This is usually the pots and pans cycle on dishwashers. The “ECO” cycles are usually low temperature washes and will just spread the bacteria from dog dishes to your dishes and cutlery.

Well I do, but our also dog licks the plates before the dishwasher goes on, which a lot of people think is absolutely rank, so I might not be the best person to take advice from.

Don’t have a dog now but this is what we previously did. With the dishwasher open the dog tended to lick everything in there so can’t see how putting the dog’s actual bowl in there would be any different.

I have to admit.... I wouldn't. But that's because I really, really, really despise the smell of my dogs wet food 🤢
I don't have a dishwasher anyway. I normally wash my dogs bowl in the sink and then spray disinfectant in the sink afterwards (I do have mild OCD though so probs not the best person to answer)

I've known cats to climb in the dishwasher and lick the almost dry plates.

Back in the days when we could eat out in pubs, my friend used to bring her dog and let it lick her plate there 🤢

Do people.........really put toilet seats or toilet brushes in their dishwashers? Confused

@Snuggz a few years ago there was a thread asking if it was acceptable to wash a bin lid in the dishwasher. I'm almost sure a poster said they put their toilet seat in! Someone else commented and said she puts wellies in hers if they have dog poo on 🤢🤢

I don’t have a dishwasher.
I don’t eat meat.
Nevertheless I’m going to have a say Grin
If I ate meat then yes no problem. I think if I ever got a d W and given I’m vegetarian I don’t then think I would. I would also accept that wasn’t fully logical.
We’ll keep an eye on you op and if savagery seems to be starting mn will tell you ! It’s good at that Wink

I put my cat bowls in. I rinse them first like everything else then shove them in :)

Are you me? Grin I always did this with my dogs.

I lost my last dog in November and am waiting for knee surgery, so have put off getting another till afterwards.

I still forget, and sometimes go to put my plate on the floor after eating.

Never got ill or anything from it, but it's done wonders for my tail wagging abilities.

I'm sure the diswasher is fine, OP. They use very hot water, and plates are smooth and not porous, so unlikely to be a haven for bacteria.

How funny, my dogs (lakeland terriers) were exactly the opposite. The bitch especially, she would sit by her water bowl and, if the water had been there for more than a few hours, she'd nod towards it and glare at me, refusing to drink until I filled it with fresh water. I always had to take a bottle of water and folding dog bowl on any walk that took more than an hour or so as they wouldn't drink from any water that had been standing for a while (although they would both drink from a plumbed-in cattle trough near my house).

They trained me very well, those dogs.

The salt and rinse aid aren't good for animals, so although I have no problem with it on a hygiene front, I wouldn't do it as it's a risk (albeit small!) to my animal's health.

Dog is also in charge of the prewash aka licks the plates in the dishwasher!
