Aibu to put dog dishes in dishwasher

Butterflyfox · 20/03/2021 20:38

This is my first post so I hope I’ve put it in the right place. So. Like everyone else, I have got a lockdown puppy. Am a first time dog owner and have been super lucky as it’s been just great, especially for the children. However am not a mad doggy person and would never let it lick my face or whatever. But I find myself putting dog’s empty plate in dishwasher at night with the human plates. Dog has separate dish - does not eat off human plates and is obviously wormed and flead etc. Genuine question - Is this normal (reasonable) or totally (unreasonable) gross? I fear lockdown has robbed me of normal social skills and this may be the first step to totally savagery .

Maybe it's loo brushes, not seats, that some people put in their dishwashers 🤔

And dildos.

And apparently you can cook half a salmon in!

Yanbu btw op

DinosaurDiana · 20/03/2021 21:38

It’s worth thinking about whether your dog actually needs chemicals on its body if it’s unlikely to get fleas. Then you could just treat if needed.

Itstheprinciple · 20/03/2021 21:39

You could have a chopping board in the dishwasher with raw chicken on and you wouldn't worry about that. The point is the dishwasher cleans things.

RabbityMcRabbit · 20/03/2021 21:41

I put my cats' bowls in the dishwasher, never had a problem. It gets washed at 70 degrees which I am guessing is hotter than handwashing

Wassailer · 20/03/2021 21:42

Fun fact; apparently we share the same gut biom as our pets. I really don’t think that washing your dogs dishes in with your plates is going to make any difference.

People who clearly don’t understand what a dishwasher does.
ChampionOfTheSun · 20/03/2021 21:45

I put our dog dishes in the dishwasher, I regularly clean the dishwasher and it gets really hot, so I don't see why not.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/03/2021 22:04

We put the cat’s dishes in the dishwasher. She licks the wet food one clean of every scrap, fresh dish each meal, dry food/water bowls get refilled and done every few days. The only things that don’t go in the dishwasher here are pots and pans.

Babdoc · 20/03/2021 22:08

I’ve been putting cat bowls in the dishwasher along with my own and the family’s crockery etc for at least 30 years, OP.
Yet to have a problem.

Peacocking · 20/03/2021 23:52

Nope. Entirely sensible and reasonable. The clue is in the name..dish-washer. Its a dog dish, and it needs washing :)

idontlikealdi · 20/03/2021 23:59

Always do with the dig, it's hotter than I ca do hand wash at, and he licks our faces SI on issue.

littlepattilou · 21/03/2021 00:02

@Butterflyfox

This kind of thread comes up every few weeks. If it's not pet bowls, it's mooncups or shit loo brushes.

Of COURSE it's not OK. It's gross, and unhygienic. Of course, some people will say it's OK. (Just to cause a debate.) In reality, MOST people know it's fucking grim... 🤮

prawntoastie · 21/03/2021 00:02

I wasn't a dog person until I got a dog, my partner is a kiss dog on the lips kind of person so I have adapted. I do put his bowl in the mix with our stuff but I usually spray my plates ect with white vinegar before washing maybe this will make you more comfortable, I just get the pound white vinegar in wilkos gives you lovely shiny tapes too

prawntoastie · 21/03/2021 00:02

taps not tapes

dottiedaisee · 21/03/2021 00:06

@MsVestibule

Well I do, but our also dog licks the plates before the dishwasher goes on, which a lot of people think is absolutely rank, so I might not be the best person to take advice from.
Love this ..🐶
Anordinarymum · 21/03/2021 00:37

I put my grandsons plastic toys in it, and I also put the dog and cat dishes in. I wash hairbrushes in it too obviously minus the hair and plant pots and even the dustpan and brush.

Don't put rose gold knives in though. Gutted

StillMedusa · 21/03/2021 01:10

My cat and dog dishes go in the dishwasher with the rest of our plates... I can't see why they wouldn't... they are just food plates! I'm veggie and tbh can't see the difference between 'traces of dead animal-human food' and 'traces of dead animal but mostly carbs' pet food!

Plus my dog likes to lick me awake..... Grin

I voted YANBU, but I can understand why some will vote YABU. Because of lockdown puppies. Everyone had the same idea, including non-dog owners (like the OP), and this is worsening the illegal breeding trade and impacting on the welfare of dogs/puppies.

Give it a few months and the rescue centres will be full to bursting.

Topseyt · 21/03/2021 01:27

All dog and cat bowls have always gone in the dishwasher in our house.

BigPaperBag · 21/03/2021 07:03

Yuk 😷 Dogs lick their bums don’t they? I wouldn’t want poo flecks stuck to the rubber lining of my dishwasher.

LawnFever · 21/03/2021 08:28

Don’t you put chopping boards with raw meat in the same dishwasher? Do you feel the same about flecks of raw meat or do you realise it all gets washed off and that’s how a dishwasher works Grin
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/03/2021 08:57

I used to wash ours by hand, but only because the dishwasher was often full anyway, and her bowl took up a lot of space. I wouldn’t have had any problems including it on principle.

She often did a pre-wash of sundry items anyway - the roasting tin was a favourite - she’d hold it down with one paw and keep at it until barely a molecule remained. Ditto a dish that had held fish pie - yum! - or a saucepan with the remains of cheese sauce, but even a dinner plate with a lick or two of gravy was always welcome. 🙂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/03/2021 08:58

I gotta say the raw meat and shelfish and fish specks would worry me more...

ThePricklySheep · 21/03/2021 08:59

This is what I was going to say. The raw chicken is more dangerous than dog food and dribble.
Lemmeout · 21/03/2021 09:02

This is exactly why I do not eat or drink at peoples house when they have animals inside. To me it’s grim. I care not what you do for yourself.
