To think Oliver Banfield is a danger to women and girls?

I’ve just read this on BBC NEWS:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-56459217

Women appear to be fair game for anyone to attack without punishment...

This probationary POLICE OFFICER grabbed the victim by the neck and forced her to the ground, all whilst calling her a fucking slag.

Plus it’s dark, he’s pretty tall. It’s on CCTV.

How will women ever feel safe when men - and specifically those tasked with keeping us safe - get away with inflicting abuse, fear and pain on us?

There are some days when I just despair.

Last week we saw spreadsheets of mainly male police officers and their crimes against women. I was totally shocked.

Who are these judges that believe that this kind of misogyny is remotely acceptable? Why aren’t they being screened for misogynistic views before they achieve Judge status?? Something is very very wrong.

There's no AIBU about it. The punishment or rather lack of is an absolute disgrace and that doesn't even begin to cover it. Some may say It would be very interesting to see how "tough" he is on a Friday night down the pub when he's out of his uniform.
Even after Sarah's tragic murder by a PC violence against women is still not taken seriously.

ThreeFeetTall · 20/03/2021 13:43

At least he'll never get to be a police officer now. But yes it is shocking.

WomenArentSafe · 20/03/2021 18:23

@Awwlookatmybabyspider -you’re right. Probably deeply insecure and needs to abuse women to feel better about himself.

@ThreeFeetTall I suppose we don’t yet know that for certain??

OP posts:
Yetano · 20/03/2021 18:38

@ThreeFeetTall

At least he'll never get to be a police officer now. But yes it is shocking.
It says he's still working at West Midlands Police. Apologies if I missed something saying otherwise.

It's disgusting, but sadly not a surprise.

Joeblack066 · 20/03/2021 18:51

This week also- robbers who stalked and attacked women to steal their Rolex watches- 16 years prison.
Rapist footballer who was on CCTV going into toilet who proceeded to barge into cubicle and violently rape woman- 10 years.
Shows what the judiciary value more.

Insomniacexpress · 20/03/2021 18:56

@yetano the Guardian article says he’s been suspended so assume he is going to be sacked? Does anyone know if there is any appeal against the leniency of the sentence? This is disgraceful. I’m in a constant state of rage recently over this sort of crap. I think the gov.uk call for evidence is still open for the review of Violence Against Women and Girls if anyone hasn’t filled it in yet...

WomenArentSafe · 20/03/2021 18:58

Yetano - bloody appalling. Doesn’t give you any confidence in the Police if that’s the standard of Police officers! Especially if you are alone. Horrific.

@Joeblack066 16 years versus 10 years. I’m shocked but not surprised. Why is this acceptable when we know the devastation that rape causes? Angry

LizzieSiddal · 20/03/2021 19:02

So dreadful. That poor woman.

The judge in this case has fork for lienent sentencing against violent men.

From thenDM article ...
The judge is the same one who spared the lead singer of Kasabian jail after he carried out an alcohol-fuelled 'sustained assault' on his ex-fiancee.
Iirc this sustained attack was also captured on CCTV.

Insomniacexpress · 20/03/2021 19:07

There’s an article here about the sentencing guidelines in the Kasabian singer case - legalfeminist.org.uk/2020/07/07/why-is-kasabian-singer-tom-meighan-not-in-prison/

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 20/03/2021 19:11

I understand he's been suspended.
I've been deeply, deeply shocked and appalled by this; I can't actually believe it.
From reading the Guardian website, it seems that he even dodged having to do community service because he didn't want to "be with criminals".
If his own behaviour isn't criminal, I don't know what is.

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 19:17

These Judges seem to live on a different Planet

Its so weird how they come to their decisions on the Jury system.
Does not make sense !

Insomniacexpress · 20/03/2021 19:18

@LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella. Completely agree. World’s smallest violin for him. The fact that he sees himself as somehow different to all other criminals and worthy of special treatment. With the number of police convicted in violent crimes against women they should be able to have a road work clean up crew entirely of (ex) police officers.

VikingNorthUtsire · 20/03/2021 19:36

This serving police officer given 10 years for strangling a woman to death after she texted his wife to reveal their affair (warning, report is distressing)

mbosnz · 20/03/2021 19:40

I'm afraid that if women are to feel they can trust any and all police officers, then the police need to clean house.

The 'bad apples' are a minority, I believe, but a significant minority. And you can't tell a goody from a baddy. For the sake of the good police and the general population they are given the powers they have to protect, there need to be serious efforts made to rid the police of those that abuse those powers, and instead of being the shepherd, they use their powers to prey on women as the wolf.

StoneofDestiny · 20/03/2021 19:53

Poor woman had to battle to get the police to even take her statement, then months to process the case! Sentence is a slap in the face to all of us.

Karmakarmachameleon · 20/03/2021 20:05

YANBU.

I know that the police officer charged with Sarah Everard’s murder hasn’t been tried and is innocent until proven guilty. But I am surprised and disappointed in light of recent events that there has been no discussion of the fact that police officers are, more often than not, male and they have a lot of power - what safeguards are there to prevent them from abusing those powers in order to harm women (or any other group)? Is there a system in place to allow people to verify a police officer’s identity? What information should a police officer give you if he/she stops you? When can (and should) you refuse to cooperate with a someone who says they are a police officer?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 20/03/2021 20:08

He works for Warwickshire Police, although I think we come under the wider header of West Mids now. I live close to where he lives.

He’s under investigation for gross misconduct, but that investigation couldn’t start until the criminal proceedings had finished...

Saying that, I don’t feel at all confident that he’ll lose his job, and his sentence is laughable. I think I’m more wary to be outdoors now than I’ve ever been in my life.

WomenArentSafe · 20/03/2021 20:12

@StoneofDestiny - bloody hell, that’s nearly as bad as him not being fired yet.

OP posts:
LakieLady · 20/03/2021 20:22

Bloody shocking.

I hope the Attorney General will ask for this sentence to be referred to the court of appeal for review.

I am delighted to say that this fucker recently had his appeal (for LESS time) thrown out and 3 years added instead. The new judge questioned the amount cut for his guilty plea, righty noting that it didn't exactly save the poor victim from a trial.

The abysmal piece of shit named in the OP used techniques he had gained in police training during this attack. The skills he was taught to protect, he used to offend.

Also reported this week was three still serving members of the police given a warning from the IOPC for apparently humerously discussing gang raping a victim of crime and discussing whether sexual favours should be a requirement to report crime.

And now, with the Spycop bill, they will have the power to preemtively exonerate crimes performed in the name of survelance. Crimes which will become legal, even if they affect another individual. I don't trust this, nor the police, one little bit.

Cassilis · 20/03/2021 20:24

He’s been suspended, not dismissed from his police job. Cunt.

WomenArentSafe · 20/03/2021 20:31

@TakeYourFinalPosition

The re are two main problems here at least which boil down to the same problem ....

  1. Oliver Banfield and Sarah Everard’s story shows us that Policemen can’t always necessarily be trusted with women’s safety.

  2. Many Judges have no understanding of the huge consequences & damage caused by rape and male violence towards women and girls.

Basically put

  • women aren’t safe
  • women aren’t safe with some policemen
  • women aren’t safe with Judges either

Am I wrong?

I hope you started a thread in a similar vein against nurses when Beverly Allitt killed 4 babies in her care and attempted to kill 3 more.

And about doctors when Harold Shipman killed approximately 250 of his vulnerable, elderly patients.

And about pilots when Andreas Lubitz killed 150 passengers on board when he committed suicide.

And one about plastic surgeons when Jonathan Brooks attempted to murder his colleague.
And dentists after Colin Howell, a convicted double murderer.

And postal workers after Robert Yale Shulman murdered five prostitutes.

And taxi drivers after John Warboys after being convicted of 12 rapes, possibly 100 more.

And firefighters when John Leonard Orr murdered four people.

And teachers when Christopher Darler raped a student, had indecent images of children on his phone and blamed his 'Heavy workload'

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 20/03/2021 20:33

You're spot on.
