How to handle this at work

Aibu for not going into

Basically on Monday I was rushed into hospital and it turns out I have had a mini stroke. I was meant to be in work an hour later so my husband rang and told my boss what had happened and got shouted at down the phone that I had not given 24 hours notice and it’s just not acceptable and what was she supposed to do now. Didn’t even ask how I was or say I hope she will be ok.
Basicly I work as a carer for a 31 year old girl with disabilities. I work three night shifts in her own home. We are employed by the family. Me not going in meant the lady’s sister (the boss in question) who lives with her would have had to stay up and look after her. We are meant to have two on the shift but the other lady I work with is off on long term sick so I have been doing them on my own. There is no bank staff.

She had not contacted me since to see if I am ok since and i know I will be in for it when I get back. They have this 24 hour notice rule for being ill. I am just not sure how to handle this. Another colleague has said maybe I should have gone into work first to show her my dropping face and arm. So should I have gone in first

Did you post this before? It looks familiar

Mintsmints · 18/03/2021 12:10

No it’s only my second post. I am a long time lurker but I came on to get some advice . I was a member years and years ago but never posted anything like this

Sorry posted too soon and it cut off my message. You can’t give 24 hours notice if you don’t know you’re going to be ill, I’m not sure what else you could’ve done. All you can say is you were ill unexpectedly and weren’t in a position to do much else.

FourteenthDoctor · 18/03/2021 12:12

Who the fuck is the other colleague and what planet are they from?

I cannot believe what I’m reading! Of course you can’t go in you’ve had a serious health incident! I’d be binning them right off and getting another job ASAP (if your health allows)

I hope you recover well 💐

Mintsmints · 18/03/2021 12:13

I had to call in about a year ago because I starting being sick about 2 hours before I went in and my job was threatened

You need a new job. This is ridiculous.

EspressoExpresso · 18/03/2021 12:15

Do you have to go back? Can you look for something else?

Sparklesocks · 18/03/2021 12:15

Can you look for a new job? It doesn’t sound like a good working environment, they haven’t arranged cover for someone on long term sick and this has shown why that’s an issue. Obviously going in to ‘show’ the stroke is not a reasonable request and anyone with an ounce of common sense would see that. I think it’s time to move on.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/03/2021 12:16

Ask work why you haven't been issued with your crystal ball!! If that baffles them, ask them how else you are supposed to know 24 hours in advance that you are going to have a sudden medical emergency!

This definitely was posted before, I read it yesterday
OneForTheJourney · 18/03/2021 12:18

Totally ridiculous! Stroke/heart attack/hit by a bus.. how on earth you can give 24hrs notice for something so unexpected?!

Mintsmints · 18/03/2021 12:19

Maybe it was another colleague of mine who posted. I know 2 are mumsnetters. I know others have been pulled up on this

skeggycaggy · 18/03/2021 12:19

OP posted about being in hospital and mentioned the work situation then. That might be why it’s ringing bells.

Thoughtcontagion · 18/03/2021 12:20

Concentrate on your own health. If we all could predict having strokes then I’m sure the recovery rate would be brilliant as we’d be in hospital waiting for it and doctors would help us quicker. 24 hours notice? You need a job with proper work policies and procedures to protect you as an employee.

JM10 · 18/03/2021 12:25

Your colleague thinks rather than going straight to hospital you should have stopped in to work so your boss could watch you have a stroke first? Does your colleague know how serious a stroke can be?

I'd be looking for a new job.

Mintsmints · 18/03/2021 12:28

I remember once I was about to deliver a project with a colleague in another job and his wife called to say he had been rushed into hospital. Now this actually put me completely up shit creek and I had to fudge through his part in front of 400 people but at no point did I think of me and instead was so worried about my colleague.

Another one of my colleagues has said “well she would have been stressed about having to cover the shift and look after her sister”

They wanted 24 hours notice before you suffered a transient ischaemic attack? What absolute cretins.

LagunaBubbles · 18/03/2021 12:37

Chonky that post isn't about her work?

Er Yes I did post that but the poster who said had a posted something similar I though she meant something about my situation at work rather then me being admitted to hospital. That post was about me being admitted and being next to a guy and I just mentioned work in passing.
Yes of course I am going to lie about something that has my user name plastered all over it that makes perfect percent sense!!!!

OP posts:
NormanStangerson · 18/03/2021 12:41

Don’t worry @Mintsmints we understand. Don’t let that derail your thread.

ChessieFL · 18/03/2021 12:42

I do recall something similar from a couple of years ago - a carer whose employer had really unrealistic expectations about taking leave or phoning in sick. Might be worth seeing if you can find that thread to see what the advice and outcome was? I can’t recall any other details about it though, sorry

DanielRicciardosSmile · 18/03/2021 12:42

OP says this is her second post, so why are you bringing up her first post and accusing her of lying?
