How to handle this at work

Aibu for not going into

Basically on Monday I was rushed into hospital and it turns out I have had a mini stroke. I was meant to be in work an hour later so my husband rang and told my boss what had happened and got shouted at down the phone that I had not given 24 hours notice and it’s just not acceptable and what was she supposed to do now. Didn’t even ask how I was or say I hope she will be ok.
Basicly I work as a carer for a 31 year old girl with disabilities. I work three night shifts in her own home. We are employed by the family. Me not going in meant the lady’s sister (the boss in question) who lives with her would have had to stay up and look after her. We are meant to have two on the shift but the other lady I work with is off on long term sick so I have been doing them on my own. There is no bank staff.

She had not contacted me since to see if I am ok since and i know I will be in for it when I get back. They have this 24 hour notice rule for being ill. I am just not sure how to handle this. Another colleague has said maybe I should have gone into work first to show her my dropping face and arm. So should I have gone in first

When you are better can you look for another job?
I don't think I could continue to work for that family.

StealthPolarBear · 18/03/2021 12:47

24 hour notice of being sick is called pulling a sickie!!
Tell them you will be off sick with a tummy bug a week on Friday, if that's how they want you to operate

steelserenade · 18/03/2021 12:49

It's really disappointing to hear that you still work for these arseholes.

What is the point in any of us advising when you will ignore it?

LApprentiSorcier · 18/03/2021 12:52

How can you give 24 hours' notice for any sickness. 'Oh, hello, just warning you that I'm going to start vomiting early tomorrow morning?'

I can't see such a policy standing up in an employment tribunal.

RunnerDuck2020 · 18/03/2021 12:54

It can’t be legally acceptable to have to give 24 hours notice of being off sick - I would be highly suspicious if any of my team told me they were expecting to have a medical emergency the following day and therefore wouldn’t be in!

Mintsmints · 18/03/2021 12:57

Er I have not posted about this before I have just joined after being a long time lurker

You'd have thought that given the last year when tens of thousands of people have had to suddenly take time off work, your employer might be a little more understanding.

I doubt a single human being alive would be able to predict any kind of health problem 24hrs in advance Confused

Take steps to find a new employer, I know where I live they are desperate for good carers.

Hope you feel a bit better soon Op.

Hwory · 18/03/2021 13:01

I have had friends that are carers that have worked for terrible employers like this.

Basically families that have no experience of being managers expecting their staff to sacrifice their life and wellbeing to look after their family members but not wanting to provide enough staff or follow the laws on working hours / payment for over nights.

Just get another job OP they're not going to change.

Mamamamasaurus · 18/03/2021 13:11

I hope you're feeling as well as you can OP, my wishes for your recovery

Are you in a union at all? You need professional advice really, that's not to say that advice on MN isn't good but a good legal argument to their batshit 'rule' would help IMO.

Fucking ridiculous, how can they expect you to know when you'll have a sudden and emergent illness!!?? 🤔

AnneElliott · 18/03/2021 13:12

Why haven't the family replaced the person on long term sick? That seems odd - as of course it means if you have any time off at all then they have no carers?

Notjustanymum · 18/03/2021 13:18

What do you mean you’ll be “in for it”? If it were me I would shout back at the sister, “ How the f**k am I supposed to give you 24 hours notice for a medical emergency?”, and mutter not so quietly “moron” then demand an apology. If she doesn’t like it, walk. There are plenty of other carers jobs around OP.
Hope you’re feeling better, and don’t rush back to work until you are fully recovered💐

Outrageous reaction from them. You had a stroke for fucks sake. Don't take any more crap from them over this. Time to look for a new job if this is how they treat you.

Lindy2 · 18/03/2021 13:41

Time for a new job OP. Your boss's attitude and the ridiculous assumption that you can predict illness 24 hours in advance means this job is just not worth the hassle.

Around here, companies are crying out for new staff to become carers. I'm sure you can find a better employer and be better appreciated.

Dobbyismyfavourite · 18/03/2021 13:53

I read your recent thread about being unwell and your concerns re work.

You need to find another job. Your employer is totally unreasonable. Make sure you rest enough to recover from your mini stroke work will have to wait. Sorry I can't offer any practical advice.

SixDegrees · 18/03/2021 13:55

What a ridiculous policy!

How is anyone supposed to know they’ll be having a medical emergency or an accident 24 hours in advance?
Just think how much quieter A&E would be if people got a vivid premonitions about say, walking in front of buses or falling and breaking a bone 24 hours ahead of the predicted accident!

And no, you should not have gone into work to show your dropping arm and face first. That’s definitely a go straight to hospital scenario.

I agree with pp that it sounds like time to look for another job. This does not sound like a good employer.

Unescorted · 18/03/2021 14:02

What happens if you are run over by a bus? Do you have to turn back time?

I am not sure what it is like in your area but there are a number of organisations advertising for care workers here. I suggest (along with pp) that you need a new job when you get better.

Hope it is a speedy recovery. x

CreosoteQueen · 18/03/2021 14:03

Op you cannot seriously be suggesting you should have gone in to work after having a stroke? Like, just think that through. Should you have risked dying in order to show your employer you were ill? Does that sound reasonable to you?

You can’t give 24 hours notice of being ill, because presumably you aren’t a psychic. If you work for someone who imposes unreasonable conditions and you are the kind of person who thinks you might be unreasonable for not going to work having had A STROKE then you should seriously consider finding another job.

BigPaperBag · 18/03/2021 14:06

How on Earth are you supposed to give 24 hours notice of being ill? Is the woman batshit crazy?? I really feel for you @Mintsmints If I were you I’d be looking for new employment ASAP, then she’ll know what it’s like to be left with no-one. Hope you’re feeling better btw.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/03/2021 14:08

Time for a new job OP.

DingBat101 · 18/03/2021 14:08

Go off on stress, quit and then take her to an employment tribunal for constructive dismissal.

Subordinateclause · 18/03/2021 14:09

I really wouldn't give it another thought until you are well enough to return to work. When you do, you can have the confidence that not one person here thinks your employer is anything other than totally bonkers. Please let us know how they respond when you clarify 'You wanted 24 hours notice that I was going to have a stroke - is that seriously what you're saying?'. Get well soon OP.

You need to be organised and plan your life changing accidents.

Tinydinosaur · 18/03/2021 14:11

How ridiculous. How are you supposed to know you're going to be ill in 24hrs? Do they know 24hrs before they get ill? Are they fucking psychic? If they are then they're pricks for not warning you about your impending stroke.
You didn't do anything wrong and they can't fire you for it.
