To think that people on FB marketplace who ask "what's your best price" are cheeky fuckers.

If I wanted to sell it for half the price I'd list it as that. Just me?

The first time it happened I just ended the listing and binned the item I was trying to sell. These days, I go back with the price I listed plus a bit extra on top for them wasting my time.

chatw00 · 17/03/2021 10:21

Yep! 2-3 times a year I use Gumtree (when having clear out of wardrobes, unopened bathroom stuff etc) and the number of people who ask if I'm willing to post stuff - when the ad is giving something for free, for pick up only. Why would I pay to post it?!

Bourbonic · 17/03/2021 10:28

No. Surely thats just part and parcel of selling. Someone can ask for a discount but you don't have to give one.

If I buy parts for work I'll always ask for a discount!

FlyingBurrito · 17/03/2021 10:31

Not really, that's a standard question when agreeing a price for 2nd hand stuff. If you don't want to take a lower price put that clearly on the advert and ignore anyone who asks

I assume you don't buy and sell as a regular thing

DynamoKev · 17/03/2021 10:32

I had this with ebay - I usually reply with twice the listed price. If it's an auction I just invite them to bid.
All these best price/last price wankers think they are Alan Fucking Sugar.

LagneyandCasey · 17/03/2021 10:38

'Thanks so much for your interest in my item. I am happy to receive offers'

SarahAndQuack · 17/03/2021 10:38

Do you include on the listing 'no negotiations on price' or 'fixed price'?

If not I don't think you can expect them to read your mind. Loads of people are perfectly happy to negotiate, and if you're not, you have to accept people won't magically know you're different from the others.

SozzledSausage · 17/03/2021 10:40

I've had messages like this on eBay. I just tend to ignore them. If you want to make an offer then make an offer.

To be honest, I'm not going to list something for £30 and tell them my best price is £5 which is pretty much what they are hoping for.

flobberdobberrr · 17/03/2021 10:53

@LagneyandCasey but I'm not happy to receive offers.
I stated the price. They can pay it or fuckity fuck off.

Purplemarshmallows · 17/03/2021 10:59

Glad its not just me this happens too. I was selling something the other day for £200 for a quick sale as it was worth more but wanted it gone, someone offered me £80!!

Fair enough but getting annoying messages is part and parcel of selling online. Either ignore or reply briefly and politely. No point getting wound up.

chocolateonnomnomnom · 17/03/2021 11:06

Happens all the time and is so annoying. Advertise it for 50 and I'll get 'I'll give you 20 and pick up today'. Umm no.

ShutUpAlex · 17/03/2021 11:08

That’s just part of selling and why I always list times for more than I think it’s worth.

If I’m looking at a car for example that’s like, 1250 I’ll of course try and knock it down to 1000.

GladysTheGroovyMule · 17/03/2021 11:08

I was selling a chest of drawers for £40 on fb marketplace. One lady offered me £20 for them because “I’m going to sand them down and paint them and the bits for that cost money”. Good for you but you’ll be paying me £40 for them because weirdly enough, your budget is your issue, not mine Hmm

It’s the ones who offer like half of what you’re selling the item for like they’re doing you some kind of favour that really annoy me though.

MrsMalcolmFuckingTucker · 17/03/2021 11:14

I got a chair of Facebook market place last week, it was on at £20 and I paid £20. But before that I saw another chair that was listed at £20 but then that price was crossed out and it said £0 then in the listing it said ‘just want it out my way as we’re moving and not taking it with us’. So I assumed they’d tried to sell it, couldn’t so decided to just give it away to save having to take it the tip.

Anyway it was a nice chair so i messaged about it and said I’d be willing to give them a tenner for it as it was too nice to give it away for free and he replied saying he was looking for offers on or above £35 quid which is more than it was originally on for in the first place Confused. I declined and got the other chair. Weird

Lunariagal · 17/03/2021 11:25

I've found that there is a certain sort of person who will jump on any perceived flaw to push a silly offer.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 17/03/2021 11:31

I just go back with the exact listing price. Hate it even more when it’s been listed like 5 minutes ago and they try half price I just tell them it’s sstc.

Normally get a if it doesn’t get collected let me know and I’ll pay full price Wink

FTM91 · 17/03/2021 11:46

I once had someone try and knock £20 off because they had to drive an hour to collect it. Sorry mate not my problem!

As an aside, I always put the street and first half of postcode in the listing. The amount of times someone has agreed to buy and then asked for the address and said its too far drives me INSANE!

NeedaLittleNap · 17/03/2021 11:46

I'm not averse to people bartering a bit - some asking prices are insane. Ask nicely and be prepared to take no for an answer = fine. But I agree there are always some right pains.

My bugbear is a lady who always pops up when I offer stuff free for collection, asking me to get my autistic child to take the thing into school and give it to her child in the playground. Err no, he literally can't do that, stop trying to make me out to be the unreasonable one here. They only live a 5 min walk from me.
