I've always been hot on my ds following schools rules with uniform despite me thinking some are often extreme.

I actually think this one is extreme but regardless AIBU to think in this case as they changed rules in February and the shops to get the uniform rule adhered to don't actually open bu government law until April it's horrendous to use isolation as a punishment (especially after lockdown) until the issue can be solved?

They look fine when she's covered them with a plaster. I don't know why they won't accept that as a temporary solution.

Whatwouldscullydo · 17/03/2021 07:12

The policy changed in February

I never understand why parents are so happy to blindly follow school "rules" off a cliff.

Why do we let then dictate every tiny aspect of our lives and our bodies. Kids have made it into school one term in an entire year. I mean seriously, stuck in the house unasked to see anyone fir a year and school still wants to reserve the right to make u sit at home without so much as a box of hair dye just incase someone decides you would be welcome back.

Just no.

I swear sone people would chop a.leg off if their school asked them too. How many other situations would anyone actually allo themselves ir their family members members be treated that way. Especially when I doubt there's a single one of us who's kids haven't been assaulted ir bullied or whatever in school which miraculously goes unseen even if its under the teachers nose In the classroom. Yet they can spot a tiny stud under hair or a.kickers dot on the sole of a shoe at 50 paces.

Lettuceforlunch · 17/03/2021 07:18

Sounds like the worst kind of school. How about they focus on learning instead?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 17/03/2021 07:19

They're only labrets. Pair of gloves, couple of twists and you're grand.

crosspelican · 17/03/2021 07:30

The school is being very unfair but the Mum shouldn’t be teaching her daughter that she can pick and choose which rules apply to her.

It’s nonsense that she can’t take the stud out (I say this as someone who has had a LOT of piercings). If it’s tight, rubber gloves will give you the grip you need.

It’s like the episode of the Simpsons when Homer got his hand stuck in a vending machine & in the end they discover he was holding on to the can the whole time! If she takes out the earring she can put this behind her but her Mum is egging her on, I suspect.

Our school is also strict about this and it’s very clear in the uniform rules that if you’re getting ears pierced got the first time, to do it at the start of the summer holidays so that you can take them out for school.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 17/03/2021 07:36

Oh dear god. I hope that my boys schools do not pull this stunt. Why do such schools hold children to higher standards than most of the UK working population than perhaps the Army? It is mad! It is forcing false adulting on children and a hyperfocus on appearance that does nothing to help with learning. OECD statistics show that other countries which do not have uniform in general consistently outperform the UK.
How can people go on about children's mental health on one hand while putting all sorts of pointless stress on the other. I would go nuclear via letter writing myself. I cannot handle this idiocy - these are rules I cannot follow - they actually give me physical pain via dissonance as a ND person.

When a rule does nothing to benefit anyone, does nothing to keep anyone safe and does nothing to comply with the law it is nothing but a source of stress.

Really people who use the sort of punishments on pupils over appearance that are more severe than those for bullying and disruption would be more useful as fertilizer.

TheSockMonster · 17/03/2021 07:36

It does seem that some headteachers are going for an army boot camp style of behavioural conditioning.

As in an actual army boot camp, many young people will thrive in an environment of simple, strictly enforced rules and reduced personal autonomy. A significant minority will be completely unsuited to it but, unlike the army where they would be selected out prior to or during training, these young people will be stuck in the system.

What sort of adults are we trying to raise?

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 17/03/2021 07:40

Yes, some of these academies seem more like Skinner boxes than a place where you raise people to learn critical thinking, employable skills and the tools to navigate the wider world.

AliceBlueGown · 17/03/2021 07:44

A lot of angry (at schools) people on this thread. I cannot imagine any school changing their uniform policy in February - much more to organise and think about.

Minesril · 17/03/2021 07:49

My son's school have asked that every child be in correct uniform after Easter. Except they go back on 13 April and shops open 12 April! When are we expected to get feet fitted? Does everyone descend on the shops on the 12th? Yeah that's sooo safe! And good luck getting a Clark's appointment.

I've measured his feet with a tape measure and got some crappy ones from Tesco, not ideal. After years of parents being told how important it is that children's feet are measured properly.

And don't get me started on fucking garden centres being 'essential' but not children's shoe shops. Angry

TheSockMonster · 17/03/2021 07:51

I should probably clarify my comment by saying I recognise some schools are in a near-impossible situation when it comes to balancing the vast and differing needs of their students.

Has anyone looked at the pic of the earing(s) it's not in the lobe and I don't know any school that allows piercing other than ear lobes (and one that allows a single nose stud).

It also says mum is a beauty therapist, I bet she can get hold of the tool to remove it.

And if she can't then maybe a call tot he local fire station, if they can safely cut rings off fingers I'm sure they can manage other jewelry.

Whatwouldscullydo · 17/03/2021 08:31

You mean make a non.essential journey to a salon?

God a few weeks back.you'd have got lynched by the covid police for that. Now it's suddenly OK and essential to get a non infected earring removed?

Everyone else is having to wait til April to get stuff done. Why are schools so special u have to tie up the emergency service workers 🙄

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2021 08:38

If you look at the pic you can tell they’re lying. That type of stud is fairly easy to remove. It’s the type a lot of south asian girls get nose piercings with & I had one too.

Felifox · 17/03/2021 08:39

It seems unreasonable to change a regulation and impose it when under Covid rules it cannot be followed.

A letter to her MP and the Education Minister needed

canigooutyet · 17/03/2021 08:50

Aside from a pair of gloves, what tool is needed?
She’s lucky she got away with them for the past 2 years.

canigooutyet · 17/03/2021 08:54

You can also buy the shoe fitting thing on line Start rite and others sell them
There are also some amazing guides on line about shoe fitting.

x2boys · 17/03/2021 09:04

Near me it seems to be the failing schools that are obsessed with uniform ,there was a local school who insisted the kids could only wear a certain type of black shoe ,and it has one of those fancy logoed uniforms brand new building lots of facilities etc ,it's been in and out of special measures for years ,whereas my son ,s school are more relaxed about uniform as long as the kids look smart ,it's not an academy so no fancy buildings,it gets far better results and has a much better reputation.

Whatwouldscullydo · 17/03/2021 09:07

can

Even measuring your feet at home is pointless. They measure a 5 so what. Doesn't mean u can pick any shoe in that size and it's job done. Never ever in having shoes for 2 kids over the past 9/10 years have we ever tried on one pair in the " right size" and walked out a shop in.10 mins. Its always taken some playing around with. There's no reason they can't wait til.april for shoes.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/03/2021 09:27

@Bobbiepin

The school's response is a massive overreaction but what studs are "impossible" to remove at home?
I have similar cartilage piercings and I couldn't get them out myself either.

Indeed, when I had emergency surgery, and later on a cancellation appointment for an MRI scan in the middle of lockdown (no piercing shops open), I invited the hospital to take them out if they thought they could.

They couldn't. For surgery they got covered up. For the MRI they checked if they were actually magnetic - they weren't. Both went ahead.

The school is being ridiculous.

Easterbunnygettingready · 17/03/2021 09:39

My ds was put in isolation yesterday as his school shoes broke and he went to school in plain black trainers.. I was told to look in our local supermarkets.. I spent an hour driving around (opposite ends of town) and no shoes to be had.... School found him a pair 2 sizes too big. He wore them all day. Sent him back today in plain black trainers.. Surely common sense and health and safety factors would alarm bell a school on 3 floors giving out huge shoes to a small dc??
Their own head of Trust said plain black trainers was acceptable.. They also rang the school.
Today school are panicking judging by the call I have just had and a further one to come apparently...

Hankunamatata · 17/03/2021 10:13

Its health and saftey. Something catches the studs and rips her ear in school then mum would be quick to sue

Nith · 17/03/2021 10:16

She didn't. The rules only changed last month.
