To not know this about kids wellies

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 14/03/2021 21:53

DD 4yrs wellies have got a hole in. Was browsing online and nearly bought her a new pair from Next but when factoring in delivery they're almost double the price of a pair from the supermarket.
Do you think supermarket wellies will be just as good, or do you think with kids wellies you get what you pay for???

Sorry I know probably not an "aibu" topic but I really need to get her a new pair asap and wanted some quick advice before purchasing! Thanks!

Personally I buy the cheap wellies.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 14/03/2021 21:55

Supermarket wellies are fine. Are the current wellies second hand? I’m amazed they’ve had enough use to get a hole in them

Akire · 14/03/2021 21:56

Supermarket ones are good for normal use they tend to be lighter compared to posher brands. Which I must think be very heavy for kids as I can feel the difference when I pick up.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/03/2021 21:56

At 4 I would get supermarket wellies they grow out of them quick.

I thought you had discovered of how to get them off DC's feet when they refuse to relax or point them Confused

happytoday73 · 14/03/2021 21:56

For kids.. Buy cheap.. They will be out of them at least once a year.... Thats my theory anyway

SquirtleSquad · 14/03/2021 21:56

We have had Sainsburys wellies for 4 years and never had a problem.

xyzandabc · 14/03/2021 21:57

If you use them every day for dog walking or such like, then probably worth spending a bit more.

But if it's just the occasional puddle splash or rainy day, particularly as the weather is hopefully only going to be improving before he grows out of them, I'd go for cheap

HeartshapedFox · 14/03/2021 21:57

I think it varies - I bought my 3 yr old monster wellies from Asda before Xmas and within about 3 wears they had holes in them, really not impressed. I bought a random nerf branded pair from Tesco (the only pair they had in his size in stock) as a replacement and they’ve lasted really well so far...

springtimesunshine · 14/03/2021 21:58

I tend to buy the more expensive rubber ones. They're softer, far comfier and they last longer. I get mine from Jojo or Frugi.

The toddler size ones are being worn by my second child now. Eldest is five so wears them out more at school (reception are outside and in wellies most of the time this year!) so not sure how long that'll last for but we've definitely got a few pairs that will have done both children.

The cheap plastic ones rub and split easily, IMO. If you're just going out puddle splashing for ten minutes here and there, fine but for any real wear or wet walking I don't think they're much good.

purpleme12 · 14/03/2021 21:59

My child has had holes in her wellies before so I'm surprised at pp being surprised!

But yes I do get supermarket wellies. Most of the time they haven't had holes in for the time she's been in that size and they've been fine for us

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 14/03/2021 21:59

Brill, thanks guys!
@ Idontgiveagriffindamn - its not actually a hole in the sole of the boot, its a hole in the front of the boot where the bloody unicorn horn has somehow ripped off!
Off to Sainsbury's I go tomorrow then! Thanks again xx

I have never ever had a pair of wellies that have got holes in them! Mostly sainsburys, recently next because that was the only place with anything in stock.

prettythepig · 14/03/2021 21:59

Asda have got a sale on thr moment. I got dd a pair the other day for 2 pound

Munkeenut · 14/03/2021 22:00

We've always needed 2 pairs in each size because one pair stays at nursery/school so definitely buy supermarket ones

Merename · 14/03/2021 22:01

I bought expensive Jojo ones once and they split after a few weeks, so have tended to stick with cheap. Did buy some more expensive ones recently from an equestrian site as I was trying to get ones that went up to their knees - these didn’t but now I think of it they have lasted a long time. Luck of the draw really but cheap is fine.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 14/03/2021 22:01

Just read the replies, now I'm in two minds again - aside from wearing wellies to the playground a couple of times a week as the ones round here are always really muddy at the moment, she goes to a forest school nursery so is outside a fair bit. In view of this, do you still think cheap ones from sainsbury's will be alright?

We've had supermarket wellies go through my niece, and both my DDs, without wearing out.
I think DD2 has had one pair of new wellies in her life...

Youarenothere · 14/03/2021 22:09

Expensive Jojo ones split very quickly, dirt cheap Aldi ones lasted ages and still going strong. Luck of the draw I think. I love a lined welly but they’re difficult to get dry if you LO likes to go into deeper puddles.

dotdashdashdash · 14/03/2021 22:12

My kids get second hand wellies and have always outgrown them before they break. They wear them almost everyday.

museumum · 14/03/2021 22:12

We have inherited second hand expensive Biden ones, they’re definitely heavier in the sole, have better support and cushioning and are probably warmer (cheap wellies are freezing cold). So it depends I guess how much they wear them.

Sansaplans · 14/03/2021 22:14

I usually buy them in the TU 25% off sale, always found them to be good. I don't see the point spending a lot on wellies that are going to get filthy, and more than likely grown out of fairly quickly. Never had an issue with quality.

Lullaby88 · 14/03/2021 22:14

I get my child cheap wellies and she wears nice warm socks anyway so not bothered about heat. She loves them! And thyv lasted ages. Got mine from shoezone. They just grow out of them.anyway and get all mucky.

Enidblyton1 · 14/03/2021 22:16

We’ve had a mixture of wellies over the years. The best were from Lidl. They had tick soles, fluffy inside and light up bottoms - winner!
Sainsbury’s have been fine. Had a few pairs of Hunters and they were longer lasting than Sainsbury’s.
Watch out for heavy wellies. Joules used to be awful for this. Not sure if they still are. Some of the Sainsbury’s wellies are heavy.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 14/03/2021 22:18

My kids' wellies are probably still doing the rounds of the charity shops now. I never paid much for them, whether I bought them new or from the charity shop if they had the right size.

It's just not worth spending out loads when they grow so quickly.
