To not know this about kids wellies

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 14/03/2021 21:53

DD 4yrs wellies have got a hole in. Was browsing online and nearly bought her a new pair from Next but when factoring in delivery they're almost double the price of a pair from the supermarket.
Do you think supermarket wellies will be just as good, or do you think with kids wellies you get what you pay for???

All my grandchildren have got through forest school and scrambling on rocks at the seaside with Tesco wellies, usually lined with knee length bed socks. They grow out of them well before they wear out.

Hardbackwriter · 14/03/2021 22:20

Are the Next ones you're looking at the ones they do with a fleecey lining? Because I think they're worth it - DS goes to a very outdoorsy nursery and so wears his a lot and they've lasted well and they keep him a lot warmer than the supermarket unlined ones he had before.

OwlinaTree · 14/03/2021 22:22

I've had all sorts tbh, Mothercare, Asda, Clarks, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Next. Some last some don't. Some get through two kids. Mine wear them quite a bit through wet seasons. I just get a bargain when I see it tbh, and take a chance.

@Toomuchtooyoung01

Just read the replies, now I'm in two minds again - aside from wearing wellies to the playground a couple of times a week as the ones round here are always really muddy at the moment, she goes to a forest school nursery so is outside a fair bit. In view of this, do you still think cheap ones from sainsbury's will be alright?
Wellies will be too cold for wearing to forest school, and too slippery. Get walking boots or ask your forest school what they recommend.
Blueboys77 · 14/03/2021 22:25

My children are both in supermarket wellies and they’ve lasted them a whole year. We walk a lot daily with dog and they climb trees, run up and down hills, puddle jump, the lot. Very active off roaders and they have been more than good enough.

The summer they are in walking boots from Decathlon. Winter, they live in wellies.

NotOnMute · 14/03/2021 22:26

I agree with a PP, Lidl ones are great - thermal lining, light up. I wish could buy them all year round. Same for their waterproof trousers. So they’re worth looking out for.

Otherwise, supermarket is fine, with thermal insoles and room for thick socks.

IndecentFeminist · 14/03/2021 22:31

I've always just bought the cheapies from the local country store. Only come in green or black but then they are only wellies 😂

Now they are older and feet aren't growing as much they both have Aigle, they seem to really last and aren't that pricey.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 14/03/2021 22:32

It depends how much they’ll get worn. My DD had wellies for school which were worn most playtimes through autumn, winter and spring. I bought her wellies from the ‘warm welly company’ as she wore them so often, kept her feet warm and last well.

ipswichwitch · 14/03/2021 22:33

I second the Lidl ones. They’ve survived DS2 kicking about in them, and the liner is removable for easy drying.

VestaTilley · 14/03/2021 22:33

We’ve gone through three pairs of supermarket ones for DS in a year - they’ve all broken or got holes. He’s a toddler so while he’s still growing so quickly I’ll not buy expensive ones, but they’re a false economy.

MondeoFan · 14/03/2021 22:35

We buy Hunter wellies. Lasted through 2 children and still passed them on for a friends child.

DrWankincense · 14/03/2021 22:35

I bought Next lined ones and they are awful.
Leaked after 3 or 4 wears.
I've yet to find decent wellies that don't leak, we also bought some from Mountain Warehouse, they've lasted a longer but certainly not grown out of.

Cheesybiscuits01 · 14/03/2021 22:37

We were replacing supermarket wellies so often during the first lockdown with all the walks in the woods. I bought Dunlop ones from one of the outdoor shops and they lasted until they were outgrown. Same price but had to get the delivered and not a nice colours or patterns are the only downsides.

landofgiants · 14/03/2021 22:37

In my opinion, all kids wellies are rubbish! I must have tried every sort and they last between 2 weeks and a few months, almost always wear out before they are grown out of. This seems to happen regardless of the amount I paid for them!

Only one or 2 pairs have been outgrown. I think there was a pair by Jojo Maman Bebe that survived and also a random second hand pair from Ebay. Current wellies are Muckboot company, expensive, but have been pretty good, though holes starting now. Heavy duty but only worth it if wearing wellies a lot.

I'm surprised that other people's wellies are lasting!! Where are we going wrong?!

ShyTown · 14/03/2021 22:38

I’ve only ever bought Hunter wellies but they last a full year- buy new in winter and size up to wear with the fleece liners and they fit through summer without. Even with a lot of wear they still look like new when outgrown.

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/03/2021 22:40

Trespass ones are good value - especially in the sale

Teapot13 · 14/03/2021 22:42

I think most of ours have gotten holes, regardless of the original price.

Brokenrecord3006 · 14/03/2021 22:43

I felt like I was going mad trying to find decent wellies that last for DS, and then I found these ones on Amazon and I'm chuffed to bits - www.amazon.co.uk/Ultra-Wellington-Wellies-Liners-18-5cm/dp/B00STIRK6C/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&psc=1&keywords=kids%2Bwellies%2Bfoam%2Bliner&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1615761585&sr=8-2

He wears them every single day and has done for the entire autumn/winter. I love that I can hand wash the lining or use them without the lining when his feet get a bit bigger. They're also made from one piece so no seams to tear (like his last ones did).

scentoflilacs · 14/03/2021 22:45

Mine have always had Tu wellies and every pair has lasted until outgrown. They’re worn lots too.

More expensive isn’t necessarily better; I know lots of people who have had issues with Jojo wellies splitting.

littlemisslozza · 14/03/2021 22:45

Cheaper wellies have always been better IME and I have three DC so they get passed down and lots of wear as we have a farm. Had the odd pair of more expensive ones and they were not worth it, just looked nicer. I'd recommend Dunlop from a country store or similar, or supermarket wellies.

We had a pair of the Next fleecy lined ones which ended up with multiple splits in them after just one child. Had to be thrown away and not passed down, like the cheaper ones can be. Joules wellies have also been dreadful.

MNWorldisCrazy · 14/03/2021 22:45

I buy all my DD's wellies from LIDL! £3.99-£7.99, rubber, wool lined AND they flash!! They have them in their special buys regularly

Brokenrecord3006 · 14/03/2021 22:45

I should probably say, if anyone is eyeing those ones up, I'd suggest sizing up a lot! DS is a size 8 and the size 10 fits perfectly.

dotdashdashdash · 14/03/2021 22:45

ask your forest school what they recommend.

Ours recommend wellies, with 2 pairs of thick socks. Wellies dry faster than walking books.

I woukdnt. I'd but then more rubber ones if she going to be wearing them a lot. Not only are they more comfortable & more supportive, but they're warmer too.

DS has been wearing his more or less daily since November with no issue - reading this thread I wonder if different gaits make a difference? We've never had any wellies at all leak.
