To not know this about kids wellies

DD 4yrs wellies have got a hole in. Was browsing online and nearly bought her a new pair from Next but when factoring in delivery they're almost double the price of a pair from the supermarket.
Do you think supermarket wellies will be just as good, or do you think with kids wellies you get what you pay for???

My kid went to forest school and went through a lot of supermarket wellies. I think they are off the same sort of material as more expensive boots though. Always a slight tear in the material that let water through. I ended up buying some moderately more expensive rubber dunlops on amazon and they are holding up well so far.

Decathlon wellies are superb!

Pinkandwhiteblossom · 14/03/2021 22:51

I bought JoJo ones for DD1 a billion years ago (she had teeny tiny feet and they were the only ones I could find that were small enough) and close on a decade later they are still being passed around our extended friends. Any supermarket ones I bought got holes in them.

I now have Hunter ones for both the DC but I bought them secondhand on eBay.

Changeforchangessake · 14/03/2021 22:51

Only ever brought cheap ones for little ones like aged 3. Brought hunters wellies in sales and crocs for every size growing for the eldest once they hit size 11 in child's though and 10 years later both crocs and hunters are still going strong for the smallest one -3rd or 4th hand! There was a massive sale locally and I brought every size going from Size 11 child to size 5 adult in both crocs and wellies and I love them still and they are as good as the day they got them.

@Needcoffeecoffeecoffee

At 4 I would get supermarket wellies they grow out of them quick.

I thought you had discovered of how to get them off DC's feet when they refuse to relax or point them Confused

Tickle the back of there knee and hold tight to the welly

Am amazed that anyone has managed to wear out wellies.
Only last month my friend was telling me she'd just passed on some wellies to someone that I'd given her some years ago and both her dc now outgrown them. They had the name of my now 24 yr old in them, so would have been worn by all 3 of my dc, and we often accepted hand-me-downs from others, so potentially they are older than that and been worn by more than those 5 I can think of.

SneezyGonzalez · 14/03/2021 22:55

My dd had some Jojo ones which she lived in this winter as we could only go to the park. She loved them and used to bounce along in them so I assume they were really comfy however the Jojo ones did fall apart before she grew out of them so I wouldn’t buy that brand again.

We do have a dog though and spend 1hr plus out every day, not to mention the garden!

She’ll be wearing crocks for the garden etc over spring/summer so I won’t buy new wellies till autumn now

Kaffiene · 14/03/2021 23:02

Lots of welly wearing here. Hands down the best ones ever and the only ones the DSs will keep on are called warmer wellies. They are made of neoprene so aren’t cold like normal wellies even if they get water in them. We also have cheap Lidl’s ones for the garden but they tend to get kicked off because they are so sloppy

SunnyChange · 14/03/2021 23:06

Had Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's wellies so far and no holes in them so far, we've only had new ones when we've had to buy a size up. I wouldn't buy expensive ones at a young age.

Latenightreader · 14/03/2021 23:10

I bought a pair from Asda last August which had holes in January (used almost daily) but the replacement pair from Sainsbury’s are lasting well and her next pair are also supermarket ones inherited from her cousin who used them a lot, but are in good condition. I wasn’t impressed that the first pair holed so quickly, I’ve had my own wellies since I was 17!

pumpkinpie01 · 14/03/2021 23:28

My ds7 wears wellies probably 2-3 times a week , thought I would buy some dearer ones with fur round the top from Next , 3 months later his feet are getting wet ,not impressed at all. I thought he would grow out of them not wear them out .

Sevensilverrings · 14/03/2021 23:37

We go through wellies. Always buy decent ones because of this, they are in them such a lot and they need to last. We mend them with Sugru if they leak before they are grown out of.

WeeM · 14/03/2021 23:44

Joules has a great eBay outlet store, I got wellies there for £12 and free delivery. They’ve been going strong for ages and dd wears them a lot out playing.

AlwaysLatte · 14/03/2021 23:52

I just buy cheap Dunlops - they look just as new passed from son one to son two and still look new enough to pass on others afterwards
.

AlwaysLatte · 14/03/2021 23:56

Not happy with the Joules ones. Had a pair of wellies and Wellibobs from there and they both perished stored in our semi open porch.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 15/03/2021 00:16

I just buy DS's wellies from Asda. He's only 20 months but they're about £12 a pair. As long as they keep his feet dry and are fit for purpose I'm all for supermarket wellies.
You just aren't paying for a name to be stuck to the front of the welly which you won't see when they're covered in mud anyway!

Ariela · 15/03/2021 01:22

We almost always bought country store kids wellies - the sturdy green sort. When very small we bought some nice ones with loops at the sides so they were easy to pull on and off. We live outdoors most of the year so they got a lot of wear. But do buy big so there's room for thicker socks in colder weather

Jumpers268 · 15/03/2021 07:11

Oh how we've gotten through so many wellies here. Love a muddy walk. As much as it pains me to say his Hunters wellies have lasted the longest and are also the lightest (previously had Next, Asda and Sainsbury's). The Sainsbury's ones were sturdy but also very heavy soled so he didn't like wearing them much. We do as PP said, size up in the winter and they'll fit until the following winter.

GladysTheGroovyMule · 15/03/2021 07:16

Supermarket wellies are fine, most of the ones my kids have worn over the years have been passed down to someone else or donated to forest school. I’ve only ever bought one pair from next and that’s because they ripped within a few weeks and so did their replacements. Fuck that.

Sceptre86 · 15/03/2021 07:46

I bought next ones for my two. My nephew has supermarket ones and I found the next ones to be heavier and looked more durable. Kids have had them for a year now, no holes and after a scrub look as good as new. We go out no matter what the weather so theirs get a lot of wear. I think it is worth paying that bit more for better quality ones if your lo is out a lot.

Ionacat · 15/03/2021 08:02

Another vote for Dunlop ones. Our local outdoor shop stocks them and they are fab.

KindKylie · 15/03/2021 08:16

I feel it's luck of the draw to be honest.

We've had amazing cheapo wellies that have been handed down to us and gone through all of mine without a issue. But I've also had supermarket ones that leak almost straight away. We had a pair from Next that leaked on first wear. I've spent more on some including brand new from Hatley once and these both leaked and had linings that developed holes v quickly. We had a pair of Hunters that were v cheap in a sale and they've been brilliant but Joules ones that were rubbish. I bought a pair fo JoJo ones in a charity shop and was so impressed that they'd kept going but they did then split.

We've become converts to The Warm Welly Company. They're not cheap but they're warm and v well made.
