I am blown away by Charlotte's handwriting, she is only five. Surely this is preternaturally advanced? Link below.

My own DC who is also five cannot write like this, and I thought his writing was great...feeling bad about my homeschool skills!

Please put my mind at rest!

No, it’s very good for five! But she has had an incredibly exclusive education, both in school and from her nanny, so she’s not really comparable to most kids!

year5teacher · 14/03/2021 21:39

I’ve taught maybe two children who have handwriting like this but I dare say royal children have more input than a frazzled teacher and TA who are trying to stop half the class eating Lego.

littlepattilou · 14/03/2021 21:41

Yeah, that's not her handwriting.

According the the school. my DD had the reading and writing skills of a 14 y.o. when she was 9 (stealth brag sorry, but it's true.) And was academically very bright. (Still is.) And her writing was nothing like that at 5.

*According TO the school.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/03/2021 21:43

It’s better than my handwriting Confused

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/03/2021 21:44

Both of my DN were writing like this by age 5. One is the son of an early years teacher who was prioritising hand strength and communication (spoken, reading and writing) skills. The other was taught by private tutors until age 7 due to illness. Both are really, really eloquent now but I think that’s down to confidence maybe.

skeggycaggy · 14/03/2021 21:45

She’s Y1 age 5. It is very good handwriting for that age I think!

Mindyourownbobbleheadedness · 14/03/2021 21:45

Nevermind your 5 year old! Her penmanship is far superior to mine!

PumpkinPie2016 · 14/03/2021 21:45

Her writing is outstanding for 5! She does have a private education along with a nanny to support at home - probably far more input than the average kid.

Also, I find it varies between boys and girls. Girls develop their fine motor skills earlier than boys so their writing tends to be better (there are, of course, exceptions).

My son's writing was clear and legible at 5 but nothing like Charlotte's. He has recently learned to join up but he turned 7 in November and is Y2.

All kids are different though and all have their talents.

Merryoldgoat · 14/03/2021 21:47

George’s looks like the better end of the kids in my son’s class (Y3).

Charlotte’s very advanced.

Not terribly surprising given a nearly £20k per year private education and one to one help at home.

My 8 year old gives me gip to just write his name.

ConkerBonkers · 14/03/2021 21:48

She is year one. Is this really average-good year 1 level? As another poster said, it's better than my own writing :)

My nearly 5 year old on occasions signs his name as Firbbie. He’s called Freddie. 😬
Also it looks like it was written by someone with the booze shakes.

I’m incredibly proud of him, he wouldn’t even hold a pen at the start of reception.

Well she is not destined for the medical profession then.....

PansyIvy · 14/03/2021 21:51

Was actually going to come on here and start a thread about Princess Charlotte’s handwriting! My DD is Year 1 and her handwriting is neat but honestly nothing compared to Charlotte’s. I have spent a lot of time in Reception and Year 1 classrooms (though I’m not a teacher) and I don’t recall seeing anything quite like this.

Wondering if it’s the result of good genes, an expensive education or something else? Or a combination of factors.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 14/03/2021 21:51

Looks like the better end of average to me.

Which considering her background and the kind of elite education afforded to them is the least I'd expect.

modgepodge · 14/03/2021 21:51

It’s pretty good for year 1, but not unbelievable. I’ve taught year 1s who wrote that neatly. You can only judge the handwriting, not the content as obviously she could be copying spellings/punctuation/grammar. Tiny classes and 1:1 support at home will make a big difference.

RunHobbitRun · 14/03/2021 21:52

DD1 not a chance. Her writing might have passed for another language from another planet at the same age.

DD2 possibly, I can't remember but her handwriting has always been peerless once she figured it out...so maybe at a similar age.

I'm reasonably inclined to believe Charlotte could have handwriting that neat given the level of privilege and status she has. Wouldn't be shocked if there's an expectation for Royal children to be little ambassadors for their family even at that age.

GNCQ · 14/03/2021 21:52

It's cursive writing.

They don't normally even start teaching that until a child is 8 years old.

It's no way Charlotte's writing.

ParkheadParadise · 14/03/2021 21:52

No, my 5-year-old takes the whole page up writing her name 🙈🙈

Anoisagusaris · 14/03/2021 21:52

Cursive writing isn’t even taught to 5 year olds in Ireland so unless you were being taught it at home (and I don’t know anyone who does that), no 5 year olds write like that.

partyatthepalace · 14/03/2021 21:52

It’s very good, but it’s not extraordinary for a privately educated child with good motor skills.

ConkerBonkers · 14/03/2021 21:53

Thank you everyone, this has all really cheered me up :)

@Level32

Is she reception 5 or year 1, 5? Very, very good for reception 5. Average - good for year 1, 5.
She’s two years younger than George and George is the same age as my son so Charlotte is Year 1.

I’ve just checked dd’s topic book from Y1 and I’d say dd’s handwriting was slightly better than Charlotte’s. Dd does have seriously beautiful handwriting though.

Year 3 Ds - on the other hand - I think that Charlotte’s handwriting is better than his now!

Dh has beautiful handwriting too and mine is dreadful. We have basically each produced a clone.
