I am blown away by Charlotte's handwriting, she is only five. Surely this is preternaturally advanced? Link below.

My own DC who is also five cannot write like this, and I thought his writing was great...feeling bad about my homeschool skills!

Please put my mind at rest!

Cursive is taught from reception in our area.
But that is awesome for a year one child !!!

OcelotPanda · 14/03/2021 21:54

@GNCQ

It's cursive writing.

They don't normally even start teaching that until a child is 8 years old.

It's no way Charlotte's writing.

Some schools teach cursive right from the start.

Neither of my kids could write that well, but my friend’s five year old could. It’s definitely good though.

modgepodge · 14/03/2021 21:54

Cursive is taught from reception in plenty of English schools!
My niece is y1 and had signed her name in cursive in my husbands birthday card this week.
It really isn’t that unbelievable that Charlotte wrote this.

My 6 year old writes like this

Msgiggles30 · 14/03/2021 21:55

@year5teacher as an eyfs teacher that lego comment made my night Grin. And no OP not usual!

Anoisagusaris · 14/03/2021 21:55

Is the curriculum not the same in private and state in schools in the U.K.?

The (state) school my kids go to start cursive from the very beginning.
hennaoj · 14/03/2021 21:56

It's not hugely better than my 7 year old, year two. He is autistic, has nearly full time 1:1 and hypermobility. I don't think its that remarkable.

DD’s (perfectly normal state) school teach cursive right from reception. They say it’s easier than teaching print and then having to re-teach with cursive a few years later.

DD was writing like this by age 6/7. It wouldn’t surprise me if a 5 year old with tiny private school classes, tutoring, etc can do it.

AliasGrape · 14/03/2021 21:57

I've taught a few children aged around 5 with handwriting like that, maybe 4 or 5 of them in 15 years.

I spent some time in Spanish schools when I was training and the standard of handwriting was always amazing. I never really got to the bottom of what they were doing so differently (I don't think I realised how good it was at the time). Maybe Charlotte's teachers are using the Spanish method whatever it may be Grin

My 6 year olds handwriting, although not cursive, is as good as this so it could well be hers.

Not always. Private schools can set their own curriculum; state schools also have quite a lot of freedom now, so what they teach can vary.
PansyIvy · 14/03/2021 21:59

They teach cursive from Reception at my DD’s school but that doesn’t mean the children are all writing cursive. In fact, I think very few are. Charlotte turns 6 in May, I think.

WorraLiberty · 14/03/2021 21:59

At least she remembered her apostrophe, unlike her big brother Wink

I don't know if it's her handwriting or not but it's beautiful and imo quite advanced for her age.

Which begs the question, if she can write in such a grown up manner, why hasn't she written the kisses properly?

She's put +++++ instead of xxxxx

ILovemyCatsSoSoMuch · 14/03/2021 21:59

I was looking at DS’s writing on a Mother’s Day card that came up on fb, it was similar to this and he was 6 (year 2). So I’d not be surprised that a girl with an exceptionally expensive education could write like that a year earlier, particularly when doing her best.

His writing is actually worse than that nowadays (year 5)

justlonelystars · 14/03/2021 21:59

@GNCQ that’s not true, I learnt cursive writing at school, beginning aged 5. I was behind the other kids as joined the school part way through the year.

bigbluebus · 14/03/2021 21:59

Looking at the kisses at the end (which I'm guessing it is more likely Charlotte has done herself), they aren't even properly formed xxxxxx's so I suspect that the rest of it has actually been written by someone else.

Oooohbehave · 14/03/2021 21:59

It’s impressive . It’s almost like she has the best education money can buy.

Camomila · 14/03/2021 22:00

They teach it from year 1 at DS1s school.

His handwriting isn't that neat, but a couple of the little girls have very neat handwriting already (not joined up yet as they are in reception).

Wilkolampshade · 14/03/2021 22:00

One of mine wrote like that age 5/6, the other, not so much (understatement).

Interesting - Charlotte, George and Louis have a Spanish Nanny I believe
itsgettingwierd · 14/03/2021 22:00

Writing abilities of 5yo vary massively!!!

It's one of those skills you acquire when you do and once you've got neat writing you've got it iyswim?

I've seen some children have immaculate adult style penmanship at 8/9yo.

She's probably had a lot of input as well as she's been afforded the best education. That's probably helped but if a child doesn't have the fine motor skills that wouldn't necessarily make all the difference.

LemonRoses · 14/03/2021 22:01

Our girls wrote like that in year one. They were taught cursive scrfrom nursery.

Lastbonestanding · 14/03/2021 22:01

I can't write like that. Fancy education or not, it's impressive.
