To want a Republic?

Nobody in the RF section can give a fact-based reason for keeping the monarchy, but there are plenty of opinions.

YABU- the monarchy are objectively better than the alternatives

YANBU- economically and morally we'd be better off as a Republic

Do people realise that plenty of countries have an appointed non political head of state? And that president means different things in different political systems? Just because you call someone president doesn't mean they suddenly have the powers of the US president, who presided over an entirely different political system in another country entirely - the powers arent magically inherent in the word 'president' 🙄

pourqouimoi · 14/03/2021 12:52

*presides

These threads always amaze me. So many people seem to love the monarchy or don't have the imagination to think of getting rid of it. I live in Scotland and have never ever heard anyone praise the monarchy. People are indifferent at best.

CounsellorTroi · 14/03/2021 13:01

@peak2021

YABU. Imagine President Blair.
That’s what monarchists always say but it doesn’t have to be an executive presidency. Someone like the Irish president.
Crowsaregreat · 14/03/2021 13:02

Yanbu, it'll happen within 20 years. Charles is going to bomb and William is no better. The Queen is good at keeping shtum, she's practically a vase.

For another thing, it's nigh on child abuse to have kids born into a world where they have almost no freedom, privacy or ability to choose their own way in life.

The president could be a national treasure type. Or people could always vote in one of the Windsors, if they were that popular then they'd walk it, right?

Yes that's a good point, they could vote for a Windsor. As monarchists keep insisting on William not Charles, which shows that they don't care about the line of succession either and would just prefer a royal version of the X Factor.

@CounsellorTroi I think if it was an 'elder statesman (or woman)' then President Blair would be a real possibility.

There is the interest and tourism the monarchy brings, and having a part of public life outside politics.

Winniewonka · 14/03/2021 14:36

I can never understand why people get so they up about the RF. They have absolutely no impact on my daily life. If there's a Royal Event then I might enjoy watching the spectacle and pageantry of it all, but that's it.We're not living in Tudor times, we don't need to swear an oath of loyalty or risk being imprisoned.
Those arguing about costs, a Republic isn't going to be free from taxes and I couldn't list you on one hand any Presidents that haven't had any scandal or controversy attached to them. The only decent one I can think of is Barack Obama.

Winniewonka · 14/03/2021 14:38

So het up autocorrect😬

Winniewonka · 14/03/2021 14:40

NOT living in Tudor times . Note to self, read carefully before posting!

Marmaladeagain · 14/03/2021 14:42

People might say they prefer to have Charles, but it won't happen.

YABU - not perfect system and changes coming our way once Charles ascends throne for sure, but William takes the role seriously and will do well in due course.

Thank goodness the spoilt Harry has left the scene - every generation goes through the same - Andrew was demoted as Charles had children. Margaret was demoted from daughter of Queen, to sister of queen and Margaret's children quickly lost to anyone's attention. That's the way it goes.

Harry is having a massive public tantrum.

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 14:43

YANBU

Unless I missed out a drastic change recently, we have general elections! We have a prime minster. There would be 0 difference if the Monarchy went back to the past where it belongs.

You could just elect a non-executive president if you don't want to change anything else.

The country has just been through a crisis as never before. That would have been the time for the royal family to step up and come forward.
What did they do? a couple of zoom calls, travel back and forth (against all guidelines and rules) to their holiday homes, meet friends and family members at panto and winter event ("promoting" something that is consistently sold out in the best of years...)

There was no risk of bombs falling on their head or any civil unrest. They chose to show how redundant and irrelevant they are. We are being sold the younger generations, well what did they do?

I honestly believe it was their chance to shine and make a mark, and become a figure of importance and support the country in crisis. The chose not to bother. Good bye then.

Marmaladeagain · 14/03/2021 14:43

Margaret a special princess daughter of King, side-lined when sister to Queen and her children disappear from public view. Harry doesn't like how the system works as it means he is a very unimportant person over the next 10 years.

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 14:44

I can never understand why people get so they up about the RF. They have absolutely no impact on my daily life.

that's the point. They have no impact on anyone's life. They haven't got an impact on anything.

It's time to put them away.

CounsellorTroi · 14/03/2021 14:47

Yes, same thing will happen to Charlotte and Louis's children in due course.

Marmaladeagain · 14/03/2021 15:14

Yes I think Harry is so poorly prepared because he lost Diana and everyone's not liked to dampen his enthusiasm about where his role eventually leads.

Doting uncle to George really is all that he would have been on offer.

He is no longer the star of the show and the wedding was really the end of his starring role, not the beginning as poor M was led to believe.

He's meant to start his dance sideways out of main scenes and accept the role. All very well to reject it, but don't tell M it's because she's mixed race. What an absolute bellend.

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 18:11

It's easy to dismiss prejudice and bullying when it's not you the victim.

ImaginaryDragon · 14/03/2021 18:28

YANBU

I believe that when the Queen passes the monarchy should cease to be. The concept of a monarchy in a society of allegedly equal people is ridiculous. It represents very little that a decent
society would encourage - The patriarchy, Privilege, Elitism, structural racism to name a few. There are not enough charitable patronages in the world to offset the negatives of a monarchy IMO.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/03/2021 19:05

What would you all name it? The republic?

England, given the state of the union.

Great - so let them get proper paid jobs and earn their own keep!

@Acesulfame that was my thought tbh

SmokedDuck · 15/03/2021 19:07

Yeah, land redistribution has a pretty chequered history, and I say that as someone who thinks land probably shouldn't be privately owned as such.

SmokedDuck · 15/03/2021 19:10

Ah - that was a reply to the comment by a pp saying that it would all be bougt by hedge fund managers! Doesn't make sense without the quote!
