To want a Republic?

Nobody in the RF section can give a fact-based reason for keeping the monarchy, but there are plenty of opinions.

YABU- the monarchy are objectively better than the alternatives

YANBU- economically and morally we'd be better off as a Republic

Berlusconi benevolent?! Or did you mean someone else?

Yes another one of these threads. And I don't give a shit ! 😂😘

And neither does the majority of the voting populace for your silly idea, it seems; hence Brexit and Tories and H&M's popularity falling. 😂😘

Imagine President Blair.

Big yawn. Imagine King Andrew. And you can’t vote him out.

@peak2021

YABU. Imagine President Blair.
Blair had more power as PM than American presidents would normally dream of.

It's a MN thread! The rest of the population voted for Tories and Brexit and love the monarchy so any rant is yours 😂😂😂

Only seven of them have to die before that's a reality. Stranger things have happened.

Why do we have to imagine having the siot presidents ? Can't we imagine an Obama? Or, like our nearest neighbour, a Michael D Higgins?

StoneofDestiny · 13/03/2021 21:35

Yes, we need a Republic.

We can have a new model for the Head of State we want, we don't have to follow any other model.

I can imagine that quite easily.

66 million Brits and we're all useless twats according to the royalists (oh apart from the precious Windsors).

It was a separate thought.

Worst case scenario: Berlusconi or Putin

Better case scenario: someone like John Major or whatever relatively inoffensive grandee can be dug up (bracing myself for cries of how awful someone thinks John Major was, not the point)

Maybe there is a best case scenario where a decent, non-partisan, able and willing head of state can be found, and can command the respect and trust of the country. I just haven't heard it yet.

Meadowland · 13/03/2021 22:06

YANBU
Classist and archaic institution and needs to go.

StoneofDestiny · 13/03/2021 22:45

One dysfunctional family is allowed to live at public expense in unimaginable luxury. This right has been given to them as a birthright, not because of any personal achievement or proven ability. Until very recently, these multimillionaires, were living without paying taxes to contribute, not only to their own upkeep, but to the services that keep the country safe.

The expect other people to bow and curtesy to them just because of who they are. The extended family, regardless of how many, expect grace and favour accommodation in palaces to ensure they enjoy permanent unearned luxury.

They have currently two apprentices idly waiting for the role as king - one apprenticeship currently over 70 years.

Regardless of the gaffs, extravagances, potentially illegal activities they are involved in, criticism of them is considered taboo and somehow the 'outsiders' are left with the finger pointed at them.

Should we have a republic, or maintain this anachronistic undemocratic institution? A Republic is definitely what we need to move to.

Awesome riposte. Are you going to give a BU/NBU and address the point of the thread, or just spout drivel all evening?
OP posts:
Pemba · 13/03/2021 23:03

YANBU of course. And it wouldn't have to mean President Boris Johnson, we could do what the Irish do.

The Windsors have been found wanting and are an anachronism. I believe they should go after Elizabeth dies. They're not even happy themselves. I am sure it will happen eventually anyway, they're far less popular with the young I think.

The drivel is getting a rise out of you! Think I'll stick with it. Bit of fun.

Fabulous Duchess of Cambridge thread in Active just now. You can really feel the love on that one.

I'm so sorry, your ladyship and moderator, I had no idea I had to obey any of your commands Hmm.

littlepattilou · 14/03/2021 12:24

You should have put a poll up!

YABU!

willibald · 14/03/2021 12:25

YABU!

Now, now, little, you should just obey the command!
VictoriaLudorum · 14/03/2021 12:41

Advantage of the Monarchy:
You know what you are getting

Issues with a Republic:
Head of State changing every x years, minimal opportunity to establish long-term contacts and relationships.
Leaving heads of state require life-long protection, allegedly.
Elections prone to corruption. How would they be organised? First past the post, proportional representation?
Heads of state overtly political.
Costs would be astronomical as everything would have to be paid for from the public purse.
You could end up with a "Trump".
Lack of continuity.

Thewithesarehere · 14/03/2021 12:46

Yanbu.
It’s time to move on with the rest of the world and have a full investigation into how RF managed to ok or veto parliamentary laws even before they reached the parliament formally.
It’s a mockery of democracy.
