AIBU to want to scream ‘it is not a word’ every time I read it on here? I have just read four threads with it in. All four people cannot possibly be American!

OP posts:

Yes I love ‘give over’ but don’t use it ever. just pondering how that came to be - it’s an odd use of over. Or give. Odd combo for its meaning.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/03/2021 08:55

But why? You're essentially saying you stop reading once an OP reveals themselves to be Irish, Scottish or American. Why only engage with people from your region?

Or non native English speaker. We were taught both got and gotten but gotten has bigger use on tv in movies and series and lots of people learn by watching them.

I would say, 'ah, give over' if I wanted my children to stop fighting.
'Would ye give over!'
Better not mention the plural of 'you'!!

Emeraldshamrock · 13/03/2021 09:09

Better not mention the plural of 'you'!! 🤣

I don't think give out and give over are related, give out is a direct translation from Irish.

When I read these threads I feel like I'm in some sort of Jilly Cooper universe where someone's having a conniption over their child saying pardon.

One must remember to speak proper like wot them English does.

HeronLanyon · 13/03/2021 11:42

mindy Oo that’s interesting.

GreenlandTheMovie · 13/03/2021 20:17

I think mumsnet should make a charity donation for every post on a "gotten" thread that mentions that its due to an "Old English" word that is still in current use in America. Any charity would be quids in!

kittycorner · 13/03/2021 20:44

I hate it too!! I correct my dc over it and we all laugh. Lots of Brits use it!
