Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

Sainsbury's spices/herbs have teaspoonable openings. I literally do my weekly shopping there because of this Grin

UhtredRagnarson · 10/03/2021 14:14

Vinegar bottles without the sprinkler top. What’s the point?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/03/2021 14:15

Such a good point! I decant into small IKEA spice jars which have a teaspoon sized hole.

When I was a kid, my folks used the pierce the lid of the bottle.
longhaulstress · 10/03/2021 14:17

Pretty much every can opener I've ever owned.

UhtredRagnarson · 10/03/2021 14:17

Yep that’s what I do too. I don’t get why they don’t just put sprinklers in them all!

TheSpottedZebra · 10/03/2021 14:18

My pyrex casserole. The logo is on the base, but embossed on the INSIDE so it sticks up and you have to scrub it.
It should be on the outside of the pot.
Madness.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 10/03/2021 14:20

Those fucking white film things that are under plastic milk bottle lids. They never come off in one piece.

Neolara · 10/03/2021 14:20

OP - You make an excellent point.

Northernsoullover · 10/03/2021 14:22

Childproof washing pods containers. I can't open them. You need 3 hands! One per corner to depress the tab and one for the middle. Now my older teen and I open them together and I decant them. Bloody nightmare design

Whatisthisfuckery · 10/03/2021 14:23

Sainsbury’s spice jars, got it. I would actually change where I shop because of it.

Tesco spice jars are too small plus they have shit plastic lids that smash when I inevitably knock them out of the cupboard. Sainsbury’s ones are much better so now I buy from there first and then use Tesco ones as refills

Oh God yes. I fight with mine then decant into a non child friendly box which sits on a high shelf.

Washing pods!

Dont design them to look like sweets if you don't want children to eat them.
Then you wouldn't need to spend on advertising to make you look caring, saying to 'listen for the click clack'.

Just design the pods so they look unappetising, or stick to selling lower-margin, lower eco impact washing powder.

Niconacotaco · 10/03/2021 14:29

My boiler. When you open the panel to see the dials, you can’t reach the taps underneath to top up the pressure.

mommybunny · 10/03/2021 14:31

Re:spices - ones I use regularly are often cheaper in the bulk “ethnic” section of my local Sainsbury’s so I buy them there and decant into washed out jam jars.

I hate bacon packaging. I make bacon once-twice per week and never use up a whole pack in one go, but the packs don’t reseal and the bacon dries out and sticks together between uses.

Mapletreelane · 10/03/2021 14:32

@Northernsoullover and @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Yes yes, came on here to say the same thing exactly. I destroy the top of my washing pods. I can never open then, despite following instructions.

To be fair my DD11 looked at the pods and she was quite incredulous at how they looked like sweets and that little kids would just want to eat them! That as an 11 year commenting on the safety!

I would be happy just to be able to open them!

Mosaic123 · 10/03/2021 14:32

Anything liquid in a carton. They might have a dotted line that says cut here, but it is a real pain.

freckles20 · 10/03/2021 14:32

Then cardboard cutting edge on boxes of cling film - argh!

mildlymiffed · 10/03/2021 14:33

Douwe Egberts coffee bottle. Impossible to lever the lid off easily.

Only buy it as it's dp's fave. But now refuse to make him a cuppa as it is the most irritating lid I've ever come across. Who designs these things?!!

Mosaic123 · 10/03/2021 14:35

Jar of strong hair conditioner. Have you ever tried to get the top of with wet hands and screw the top back on with one hand? You have conditioner in the other hand. Stopped buying it.

I bought vinegar from either Aldi or Lidl recently (can't remember), and it had a sprinkler top.

We do the same, saved an old plastic ice cream tub for this.
UhtredRagnarson · 10/03/2021 14:37

Ooh thank you!

DearTeddyRobinson · 10/03/2021 14:37

Ugh so much. Agree with the spice jar and bacon (indeed any other ham, salami etc) packet stupidity.
The garden hose. We have a Hozelock hose and a Hozelock reel. The connectors on the reel are positioned so stupidly, that you can't connect the hose properly. Hence, drips every time. So frigging annoying.
Dyson handheld. Yes it does an adequate job hoovering up crumbs etc but why can you only operate it with one finger? Why can't you leave it on without keeping your finger on the button the whole time. So, so stupid.
Samsung washing machine. There is a hose to drain the water if you need to open the filter. Good idea right? Wrong, as the hose is 2 inches long so you can't actually direct the water into a basin or whatever, it's just a different way of flooding the floor. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Wow I am full of rage Grin
