New kitten is very sick. Seller will take no responsibility

So Friday evening I purchased a little sphynx kitten. When I got there it was clear the kitten was underweight but apart from being boney and dry skinned she was playing and inquisitive. I was told she was in good health was given her vaccine record. She was born very small and was 11 weeks old needed her second vaccine this week. I Asked to see mum and she explained that she had bought this kitten days before and had to sell her due to her other cat not liking it. She showed me pics of the kitten with mum and gave me the vax records with breeders details on. As soon as we got home she had bloody diarrhea I contacted her straight away and she seemed genuinely shocked and concerned. Said it was most likely the stress of journey. By Saturday evening the dhe diarrhea had continued all day and she wasn't eating. The lady wasn't responding to me. I Contacted a vet who said it was most likely the stress of the move and too keep her hydrated. I still didn't feel happy so tracked down her breeder on Facebook and she was shocked she had been resold and was very helpful explained she had been weaned onto a raw diet and was used to that and the biscuits the lady had been feeding her were probably the cause. I went straight out and bought her the recommended food and some fluid replenishment drinks and she ate fine after that, the diarrhea eased and became less runny and bloody. By Sunday night she devoloped bad eyes and was sneezing. This got worse throughout Monday she stopped eating agaim and I rang the vet. The vet explained she was severely dehydrated and that she had an infection. I had to go again yesterday and I also have to take her back again today. It is costing a fortune. Which i don't mind but the woman I bought her off is denying she was ill saying she had diarrhea but was fine! That she didn't have her long enough to make her sick and that this is my fault and she won't take her back (I wouldn't of taken her back to her anyway) she won't refund me and she won't contribute too vet fees. I am more upset about what she has done to this poor kitten. The photos the breeder sent me of the day she left hers it's just heartbreaking too see how much weight she lost. It is touch and go at the moment and I am just angry. I feel she should take some responsibility for what she has done. Am I being unreasonable to expect her to contribute? Where do I stand with this? There is a good likely hood this cat may not live and I have spent 1300 on it so far and not to mention my children and how upsetting it all is

😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

What am adorable ugly critter she is 🤣

I have always maintained that my next cats will be Devon or Cornish Rex which are similarly ugly critters! The lack of hair and character appeals so much though.

I am so happy that she is starting to thrive.

FannyFlapClap · 16/03/2021 11:23

Been following your thread and glad she seems to be progressing in the right direction. It's a very similar story to my little girly cat. I got her at 10 weeks from someone who bought her from breeder at 8 weeks and seemed a bit small and lethargic once we got her home. I suspect she was neglected and her previous owner didn't understand how to look after a baby animal considering we were handed a bag of cheap adult cat food for her, totally inappropriate food that was going right through her. It took us a few weeks of the correct diet and care to bring her up to where she should have been. We still have her 10 years later and is as strong and healthy as she could be.

You're doing everything you possibly can to see her right and I hope she makes a full recovery.

I sometimes wish that pet ownership could be regulated in someway to prevent animals ending up with incapable owners.

CaribouCarafe · 16/03/2021 11:24

Aww thanks for the picture OP, she is very cute - love her massive ears! She looks happy Smile

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2021 11:37

I think all living creatures would rather endure temporary suffering of some sort and then recover and live, than be killed when they aren’t well! It is only when the suffering or pain is endless and at end of life that PTS is the kind answer.
OP you have done your best with this little kitten, and her sickness was entirely due to the actions of others, you have nothing to reproach yourself for. I am wishing kitty and long and happy life with you.

PineappleTart · 16/03/2021 11:38

I'd get her a plug in heated mat for her bed so it stays nice and toasty all night, can pick them up on Amazon for very little and they don't get too hot unlike a hot water bottle

CatChant · 16/03/2021 13:46

Oh what a dear little face. She is lovely @Sp3849 and it sounds like she's definitely on the mend. It's sad that she had a chequered start in life but she's getting the very best of care with you. Long may she reign over your household.

Don't pay any heed to the ridiculous and heartless suggestion to put her down. The vet wouldn't have advised you to persevere if she didn't stand a fighting chance.

I have a huge, friendly, cuddly cat who was once a neglected scrap of a kitten who nearly died of cat flu. You would never think it to look at him now. Hopefully it will be the same for your little pixie face.

MrsMackesy · 16/03/2021 15:24

Very glad to hear - and see - your updates OP. Those ears and eyes...!

I remember a similar scrap who slept for 3 days solid on arrival here, so stressful had life been beforehand - cried if removed from the knee, so much were they in need of warmth, comfort and 'a mother'. It wasn't easy for a good while but you wouldn't believe it now, with the strapping rascal they became. That early struggle forged a strong and rewarding family bond, especially with one DC and me.

I expect Tinkerbell/Baby Yoda will need lots of rest and TLC for some time but I hope she continues to go from strength to strength for you and your DS.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/03/2021 15:37

That is 100% Yoda !!! 🥰

Thank you for putting a picture up

frostymornings · 16/03/2021 15:43

Just felt I had to post to say

  1. what a gorgeous kitty
  2. what a fantastic job you are doing looking after her, lucky cat to have such a dedicated cat mumStar
allmycats · 16/03/2021 16:20

So pleased that she is making good progress.

makingmammaries · 16/03/2021 16:32

Lovely kitten. I hope she has a long and happy life.

purdypuma · 16/03/2021 16:43

Shes Gorgeous!🥰🥰 I've been checking this thread daily for progress updates. Ignore narrow minded trolls who advise you to PTS cos she needs antibiotics...ridiculous!
If it helps I think aldi have got heated pet mats on special deal this week.

Alaimo · 16/03/2021 16:48

I echo @PineappleTart - get her a little electric blanket/heated mat. I have one for my cat, not because she's ill, but because she always seemed cold. She absolutely loves it and is on it all the time. It doesn't use too much electricity either, I think it's another £1/month even though it's on 24/7

Bloodyhamabeads · 16/03/2021 16:50

Lucy’s Law - it’s illegal for a third party to sell a cat or dog under 6 months. Are you sure it wasn’t a kitten farm OP? Sure has lots of tell tale signs... sick kitten, you didn’t see the mother, the story about them having to sell it because it didn’t get on with their other cat.

Closetbeanmuncher · 16/03/2021 17:21

Hi OP,

I'm so glad she's feeling better and you've done a fantastic job of caring for her so ignore the awful comments.

Did the vet mention anything about kitten formula to try and put some weight on quicker?

Keep the sock sweaters on her (thermal socks are also good). I second the heatpad and maybe an igloo bed with a nice shepa fleece inside.

Keep us updated and more pics please when she's feeling better and in a posing mood 🙂

LApprentiSorcier · 16/03/2021 19:17

Oh, she's cute. Sphinxes always make me think of Gizmo.

PetPaperPigeon · 16/03/2021 19:18

This is the first thread I’ve ever followed with so much uneasiness and nervousness! I am thrilled to see the kitten slowly respond to the treatment, she looks really tiny! You have done a sterling job fighting her corner, she is lucky she arrived at yours, it sounded like she would never have survived at the seller’s home.

MrsPerfect12 · 16/03/2021 19:42

Glad your kitten is doing better, I hope she's perked up even more.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 16/03/2021 21:02

makes me wish @yomommasmomma was really sick.

Brilliant to hear that kitten is getting stronger - and she looks beautiful, thank you for the picture, hope she has another good night.

Cailleach1 · 17/03/2021 02:05

@Sp3849 , just saying, you can never have too many photos. Also, you can even post the photos on 'The Litter Tray' section.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/03/2021 02:13

Never too many cat photos.

Soubriquet · 17/03/2021 08:16

@IHaveBrilloHair

Never too many cat photos.
Definitely not. Especially sphynxis are my dream cat Grin
cricketmum84 · 17/03/2021 08:21

Oh she is just beautiful! So happy to hear she seems to be on the way to recovery.

We had a very poorly cat in the vet hospital for 12 days a couple of years ago and it was touch and go for ages. I know exactly what you are going through OP. Such a worrying time.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 17/03/2021 08:53

Glad she is doing well. My first cat was called Tinkerbell and she lived to be 20!

Floralnomad · 17/03/2021 09:05

How is she doing today @Sp3849 ?
