New kitten is very sick. Seller will take no responsibility

So Friday evening I purchased a little sphynx kitten. When I got there it was clear the kitten was underweight but apart from being boney and dry skinned she was playing and inquisitive. I was told she was in good health was given her vaccine record. She was born very small and was 11 weeks old needed her second vaccine this week. I Asked to see mum and she explained that she had bought this kitten days before and had to sell her due to her other cat not liking it. She showed me pics of the kitten with mum and gave me the vax records with breeders details on. As soon as we got home she had bloody diarrhea I contacted her straight away and she seemed genuinely shocked and concerned. Said it was most likely the stress of journey. By Saturday evening the dhe diarrhea had continued all day and she wasn't eating. The lady wasn't responding to me. I Contacted a vet who said it was most likely the stress of the move and too keep her hydrated. I still didn't feel happy so tracked down her breeder on Facebook and she was shocked she had been resold and was very helpful explained she had been weaned onto a raw diet and was used to that and the biscuits the lady had been feeding her were probably the cause. I went straight out and bought her the recommended food and some fluid replenishment drinks and she ate fine after that, the diarrhea eased and became less runny and bloody. By Sunday night she devoloped bad eyes and was sneezing. This got worse throughout Monday she stopped eating agaim and I rang the vet. The vet explained she was severely dehydrated and that she had an infection. I had to go again yesterday and I also have to take her back again today. It is costing a fortune. Which i don't mind but the woman I bought her off is denying she was ill saying she had diarrhea but was fine! That she didn't have her long enough to make her sick and that this is my fault and she won't take her back (I wouldn't of taken her back to her anyway) she won't refund me and she won't contribute too vet fees. I am more upset about what she has done to this poor kitten. The photos the breeder sent me of the day she left hers it's just heartbreaking too see how much weight she lost. It is touch and go at the moment and I am just angry. I feel she should take some responsibility for what she has done. Am I being unreasonable to expect her to contribute? Where do I stand with this? There is a good likely hood this cat may not live and I have spent 1300 on it so far and not to mention my children and how upsetting it all is

@Sp3849 yes and the penicillin you mentioned will make her a very lethargic kitten as well as being poorly it'll literally knock the feet from her. Just soothe her and try relax I'm not going to tell you to sleep but try and stay calm, I wish more owners were like you xx

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/03/2021 15:39

Glad to her that she is getting stronger, eating and drinking ☺

MNWorldisCrazy · 14/03/2021 17:35

@VestaTilley

You’ve been conned.

If you haven’t already, please get the cat to a vet ASAP, instead of messaging us on here.

🤦🏼‍♀️ Pleas read OP's posts!!

@Sp3849 I get it OP. I have a 6yr old with ASD and I 1000% get exactly what you meant and the position you were in.
It's impossible for anyone to fully understand unless they have a child with ASD.

It reminds me slightly of an appeal a father made once, for a Tommee Tippee sippy cup his autistic son used and had become broken. The boy would NOT use any other cup and had in fact become hospitalized with dehydration as a result of not having his particular favourite sippy cup and therefore refusing to drink. However this cup had been discontinued in 2000, meaning a replacement was unlikely. So he made an appeal for people to look in their cupboards/attics etc.

Thankfully in the end, it became viral and Tommee Tippee ended up finding the tool they used to make the cup and made an entire batch of these cups, just for this little boy with ASD, so he could remain hydrated :)

My point being, to simply explain what it is like when your child has ASD. These are the lengths many (I'm sure not 'all') children with ASD will go to when demanding something they love - it MUST be identical. They WILL play the long game and become distressed. Or at least, my child with ASD certainly will! Op was just trying to make he child happy by buying another cat of the same breed.

Personally I think you're an angel op, you've saved this cat's life........

FredtheCatsMum · 14/03/2021 18:10

You're not being unreasonable to be unhappy, but you do have to look after this poor wee kitten now.

Sp3849 · 14/03/2021 18:10

@MNWorldisCrazy Thank you ❤️

@Ludo19 thank you for responding this has helped me rest a bit. She just wants to cuddle into us and that is what she is doing has done all day. She seems happy. Your description of taking her feet from underneath her is exactly what is happening really. Throughout this whole ordeal she has not failed to go to toilet in her litter tray. I have just been very concerned today as she literally falls over in it! Or falls asleep whilst weeing and falls over! If she can get to it without collapsing. She is still eating and drinking though and seems to be holding her body heat a bit better today. Quite happy curled up on us looking around. Cuddles and blankets are seeming sufficient in keeping her warm. The vets was struggling with an incubator a few days ago so this has to be a positive also. X

I hope little kitty continues to improve.

Look after yourself though as well.

Cripesalive · 14/03/2021 19:14

I'm really rooting for you and this little kitten OP, it is clear that you really care. Fingers crossed

Ludo19 · 14/03/2021 19:17

@Sp3849 you have a good wee clean baby there, she's a fighter by the sounds of it that she wants to make it to the litter tray. That strength of character will serve her well. Be kind to yourself, you have went above and beyond. Just be her mummy, talk to her to soothe her. Let her feel your heartbeat, try a sling type thing from a soft scarf for example. Can I ask is her gums and pads overly pale?

Ludo19 · 14/03/2021 19:20

Keep us updated, I'm wishing you and your little furless baby (& all your family) the very best. Your love and devotion alone will provide her with strength......I'm not saying a cure but strength xx

sonjadog · 14/03/2021 19:33

Glad to hear things seem to be going in the right way today. Fingers crossed she continues to improve over the next days.

Gubanc · 14/03/2021 19:43

Hi OP, sphynx cats shouldn't be skinny. I. Fact they should have a bit of a barrel-like tummy.

I'm glad the kitty is getting better, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for her.

I'm outraged by both these people and their stories, no reputable breeder lets a kitten leave their mum this young as it's still a crucial time for their development. Most sphynx breeders will let their kittens go to new homes at 14 weeks (or even 16).

If you feed your sphynxes a balanced raw diet they shouldn't need weekly baths, it really reduces the greasiness.

Sp3849 · 15/03/2021 07:46

So this is a very exciting update. She seemed to really brighten up more last night and throughout the night has been walking to her litter tray and sitting upright by her heater from time to time she seems to be improved alot more over night. I have to keep her In a large fabric dog travel pen in the night I put her bed hot water bottle litter tray bowls and food in there and a heater is close by as I worry she is so small she could easily hurt herself. I could never take her to bed at the moment as she is just so small. And on checking her she was getting out of her bed and coming to the door to greet me bless her. She even stood at her food bowl to eat and drink! She truly is our little fighter I am so relieved today. I feel I can breathe and enjoy her again. Thank you to everyone for your kind words xx
