I watch many documentaries , which I enjoy, but don’t recall ever seeing David Attenborough mentioning that the adult of other species engage in certain acts (read that as a s*xual ones )with an adolescent (i.e not sexually mature) of the same or opposite sex, nor do I recall seeing any other species lopping the sexual anatomy off of their offspring either. Yet current ideological views which support both the above as being natural for Homo Sapiens, is also supported by our politicians and both public and private corporations.

Does the mean we are worse parents than all other species on the planet or are we just more progressive or have I just missed that particular episode?

Incest and infanticide generally doesn’t make for prime time family viewing. Both are common throughout mammal species.

apalledandshocked · 09/03/2021 13:23

If you have too many male ducks on a pond compared to female ducks, the female ducks can drown :(

Shinyletsbebadguys · 09/03/2021 13:23

Err are you aware that some ducks effectively organise gang rapes to the point female ducks have evolved changing anatomy to prevent this?

I very much doubt the predatory ducks ask for ID to check age before they start.

Harp Seals abandon their offspring after 12 days.

A form of sparrows hunt down nests of other chick's where the mother has mated with the same male and kill them.

No. We are not the worst group of parents.

peak2021 · 09/03/2021 13:26

I don't like calling someone a particular animal as an insult or criticism- for example I called out someone a few years ago for referring to a footballer as 'horseface' as unkind to horses.

araiwa · 09/03/2021 13:27

That's a strong opinion on some very wrong generalisations

MyLittleOrangutan · 09/03/2021 13:39

Animals commit rape, infanticide etc rather often. The natural world is brutal.

The thing is, we're supposed to be, or we claim to be, better, we have a conscious, morals, we don't blindly follow our urges or instincts, a person who does, is not better than an animal, because they can't control themselves as a human should.

Male and female genital mutilation is remarkably common throughout our species, god knows why, I think its vile, so is sacrifice, both human and animal. These are barbaric things we don't see in animals, we don't have an instinct for these things, its culture driven barbarism. Which I think is worse than animals following their instincts to kill the offspring of other males, we make a choice to hurt others when we should know better.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/03/2021 13:41

Depends on the animal.

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 09/03/2021 14:02

All sex between animals is rape. They don't have the mental capacity to give their informed consent - if they did, humans having sex with animals wouldn't be illegal.

I have no time for David Attenborough and his sick documentaries. Filming others having sex without their consent is a crime.

FatCatThinCat · 09/03/2021 14:07

Read up on chimpanzees, the males are utter bastards.

FatCatThinCat · 09/03/2021 14:08

Or domestic cats who get pleasure out of torturing helpless, smaller animals to death.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/03/2021 14:12

The thread on dolphin rape springs to mind. Grin

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 09/03/2021 14:53

I recall watching a documentary in chimps and the males do rape the adolescents in the group.

Ponoka7 · 09/03/2021 15:01

@FatCatThinCat
"Or domestic cats who get pleasure out of torturing helpless, smaller animals to death."

In defence of cats they sre making the mammal easier to digest once the kill has taken place. Cats in the wild have to eat and run. When mammals are stressed they release a chemical that makes the chewy bits soft and digestible.

Look up the mating habits of otters, even necrophilia features. Then there's the rodents who throw their babies at predators. Ants have slaves and only top females get to have puppies in some dog packs, any other puppies born are given to the older pups to play with and are killed during rough play. If there isn't any older puppies then they are killed straight away.

Nookable · 09/03/2021 15:01

Adolescent female fossas resemble males. They go through a stage where their clitoris enlarges and looks more like a penis and they secrete an orange substance that normally only makes release.
Scientists have theorised that this stops males attempting to mate with them before they're sexually mature.

Soubriquet · 09/03/2021 15:06

Animals have no concept on right or wrong

They live to survive and that’s it

We as humans are supposed to have the mental capacity to know when things are morally right or not

It’s when we don’t use that capacity that we are branded as worse than animals

Newnamefor2021 · 09/03/2021 15:38

Many animals eat their own young!

The animal world is brutal and horrific.

But I get your point.

I think referring to someone as an animal means referring to someone in a primal state, which makes sense.

Some animals pray on smaller weaker animals of a pack and kill them just to go up the ranks, humans are not unique in their barbaric natures.

NiceGerbil · 09/03/2021 16:27

Badgers are keen on incest I have heard.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2021 16:32

If someone says a person is worse than an animal, what they are saying is that the animals are better than that person, surely? In the case of quite a few humans it's the simple truth.

RudeAF · 09/03/2021 16:35

I promise you the animals are not offended.

Tal45 · 09/03/2021 16:49

People can't be worse than animals because humans are mammals which ARE animals. For some reason people think animals are something different to them, something without morals or no sense of right or wrong. This is totally incorrect because, as I said before, humans are mammals/animals.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2021 17:18

www.dictionary.com/browse/animal?s=t suggests that all living things are animals; except in definition 2, when it is specified as "any such living thing other than a human being".

NiceGerbil · 09/03/2021 19:16

We're definitely animals, mammals, and not something else, no matter what the Bible says Grin

NiceGerbil · 09/03/2021 19:20

We as humans refer to animals as not us (defn 2) but we certainly are.

Very destructive, highly successful animals but animals nonetheless.
