Name change for this as quite outing

What would you suspect if your adult child suddenly appeared to have a good deal of money (think about a few weeks ago asking for petrol money to get to work, to borrow money for food and saying they are completely skint etc) then suddenly turning up in a finance-free top of the range car and talking about going to work part time instead of full time. The stories behind the car purchase have ranged from ‘had a large win’ to ‘it’s on finance’ to ‘I’ve been saving’. The change has been so sudden and bewildering and I’m really hurt because if it’s saving then it’s been partly at my and DH’s expense because we’ve been subsidising her even though we struggle ourselves and also I’m hurt because she doesn’t trust me enough to be honest and we’ve always been really close. She deflects direct questions on the matter. For context she’s 20 and earns in the region of £22K and rents a house with one housemate. Obviously her finances are her business but we’ve always been very open about this sort of thing and she’s happy to question us quite brutally about how we spend our money so the sudden clamming up is usual.

I’m worried that she’s involved with something and would be interested to know other's thoughts on the matter.

YABU = she probably has been saving secretly and deserves nice things
YANBU = there is something untoward going on

She could have leased the car for not that much

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/03/2021 15:37

Another who came here to say Only Fans is the first thing that came to my mind. If it is money from this, she is an adult so it's up to her how she earns extra cash, it's just a shame that she's giving different reasons instead of being more upfront about how she's afforded it.

LolaNova · 09/03/2021 15:37

My first thought would be Only Fans too. It’s SO common. DH manages a gym and pre-lockdown whenever I’d visit he’d be able to point out a handful of girls at any one time who do it.

Turnedouttoes · 09/03/2021 15:40

There’s a bit of a craze going on on TikTok at the moment with girls showing off what their sugar daddy’s have bought them. That would be my guess or OnlyFans but I doubt she’d have saved up thousands in just a couple of weeks unless it’s very popular and explicit content

HollowTalk · 09/03/2021 15:47

Without pension contributions she'd be taking home about £1550 per month. How much is her rent? Does she spend much on clothes?

How do you know it's finance-free?

I'd be very, very suspicious. I just can't see how she could buy that without being up to something. I doubt it's a lottery win - surely she'd tell you about it?

SplendidSuns1000 · 09/03/2021 16:21

If it's not savings then I'd think either she's met someone who's giving her money or she's doing sex work online. Just make sure she's safe and tell her she can talk to you about anything in case she gets into any trouble.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/03/2021 16:36

I thought Only Fans as well. It's hugely popular at the moment.

islockdownoveryet · 09/03/2021 16:42

I doubt it’s savings I suspect finance or a loan and she’s not honest because she knows you’ll disprove.
Ask her outright again face to face , can you tell she’s lying ! I can with my adult daughter.

ihaveallergies · 09/03/2021 16:45

I mean, if it’s on finance isn’t that the end of story?

You don’t know whether she’s paying a cheap amount every month but is tied to the contract for a ridiculously long time. Many people have cars they can’t afford on finance

ihaveallergies · 09/03/2021 16:47

Only fans isn’t necessarily nudes, many people just post the same content they do on Instagram eg a bikini holiday pic

SassenachWitch · 09/03/2021 16:49

Sorry, but I immediately thought onlyfans too.

usedandabusedx1000 · 09/03/2021 16:53

@ihaveallergies op said “finance free” as in she’s been told it’s not on finance, hence the query...

SenecaTrewe · 09/03/2021 16:56

Whoring.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/03/2021 17:03

@SenecaTrewe

Whoring.
Hmm
ChronicallyCurious · 09/03/2021 17:04

I’d think finance or OF also.

I have a few friends on Only Fans. It’s a subscription service (most charge anywhere between £5-£20) and have underwear/topless shots. My friends then charge extra for personalised content such as nudes/videos/replying to messages. Some don’t do the nudes but from what I’ve been told they make the majority of their money selling personalised content on there which the subscribers pay on top of their subscription fee.

ConstanceGracy · 09/03/2021 17:11

Maybe sex cam work or a sex chat line .
A friend of mine got a part time job talking dirty on the phone and she made an absolute mint .

Royalbloo · 09/03/2021 18:06

I would immediately think drug dealing or fraud I'm afraid

HollowTalk · 09/03/2021 18:12

I agree with you, @Royalbloo. It doesn't look good.

UhtredRagnarson · 09/03/2021 18:15

Either only fans or a dealer boyfriend.

Cocomarine · 09/03/2021 18:19

Sex work was my first thought too, sorry 🙁

One thing’s for sure, it’s easy enough for you to do the Maths to discount that it was bought outright from savings.

FireflyRainbow · 09/03/2021 19:41

Sugar daddy

FireflyRainbow · 09/03/2021 19:42

Sex work, drug dealing.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 09/03/2021 19:45

Sugar daddy, sex/camera work or drug dealing. Have you tried googling her or reverse searching any photos she's got on IG, etc?

ihaveallergies · 09/03/2021 19:53

But sex work wouldn’t pay enough in such a short period of time to buy a top tier car outright
