To think my gander should not come into my house.

We have a half dozen geese, one of them a gander. The other afternoon I heard honking close by and investigated to find our gander in our entryway honking for dinner for him and his harem. Obviously, he was sent as spokesgoose.

There’s a man I watch on YouTube who has a duck farm and he yells “all ducks go to bed” and they do!! Grin when he lets them out in the morning he yells “release the quacken”

I’m easily amused. I also watch a man clear out drains. Blush

VienneseWhirligig · 08/03/2021 23:26

This reminded me of this story - a Swan not a goose, but they can be as aggressive and obnoxious!

backinthebox · 08/03/2021 23:36

@UhtredRagnarson How did they get the TV on? FIL had been watching the cricket and fallen asleep with the back door open. They tried their luck loads after that!

As long as they weren’t watching Sunday kitchen! Shock

Serin · 08/03/2021 23:43

I thought you meant gender.
A gander is much better.

Wackadoo · 09/03/2021 00:46

This is the thread I need today 😀

Mylittlesandwich · 09/03/2021 00:50

I'm quite afraid of geese. I also read this as gardener.

BerniesMittens · 09/03/2021 02:27

We've got Canada Geese on our lake at the moment. They come back every year to raise a family. Smile

This was taken last year. 😍

To think my gander should not come into my house.

My dad always told me that when he was a little boy, his uncle had a goose on his farm that was basically a guard dog. Well, a guard goose. Could it be true, or was he teasing me? He said it was very territorial and would chase you out of the farm yard if it didn't know you or didn't like you. I so want it to be true...

RickiTarr · 09/03/2021 02:45

@UhtredRagnarson

Well the rhyme does suggest that they wander, doesn’t it? Grin

You’ll find him in your lady’s chamber soon Wink

  • @wellthatsunusual* Yes, geese are brilliant guards! They are territorial, make a dickens of a racket if someone unknown turns up, and can be quite aggressive. Having said that, apparently they turn chicken if you shout "BOO!!" at them. I've never had the opportunity to test this out so no idea if this is true. Grin

Trying not to laugh out loud, on my very quiet ward, at the phrase 'Spokesgoose'
This thread has made my night.

I keep expecting the feathery shites to join me, husband and dog on the couch! We built them a pond and they love it. They have pool parties with local wild ducks and native hens ( in Tasmania). They are good guardians. They also, if we come home at feeding time like yesterday, they will stand in our driveway which has their trough next to it , and refuse to move until one of us gets out of the car and feeds them! We are absolutely being schooled here!

'Tom Honks' Grin

backinthebox he's lovely! How did he defend you??

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/03/2021 06:57

DD had her silkie rooster in the dining room yesterday, for zoom show and tell. And before we moved house and built them a run, our three swedish flower hens used to sidle into the kitchen, giving us side-eye and murmuring to themselves that we hadn't seen them yet, and steal the cats' food and poo on the floor.

Tinkerbell456 · 09/03/2021 07:06

Negotiation with this goose and his children of the night? I am fairly sure that no compromise could be reached! On the plus side, they do only do this stuff when they would usually be fed. I tried talking, I really did, but all I got was “honk”!

He might be trying desperately to let you know the Goths are on their way and Rome is about to fall.

Tinkerbell456 · 09/03/2021 07:36

Possibly awesome. However, I think it had more to do with Exeter farm and feed poultry chow! Even so, Goths? My money is on the geese!

He's fantastic!

I love geese, but I'm also a bit scared of them. One chased me when I was little and grabbed the back of my wellington boot.

Love this thread, am nominating for Classics

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 09/03/2021 08:06

I one came in and found one of my chickens on the back of the sofa sitting there, chilling out. Wouldn't mind but it had to go through three rooms to get there.

Lochmorlich · 09/03/2021 08:08

We had 3 ducks years ago.
The drake used to lead his two ladies into our porch and quack for attention.
I miss those days.

Tinkerbell456 · 09/03/2021 08:13

My father is just itching for next Christmas. You are actually supposed to worm geese. I’d like to escape with all my limbs. Any hints?

thebabessavedme · 09/03/2021 09:16

@Tinkerbell456, I don't have any tips but I will ask my 82yr mum, a few weeks ago while on zoom, she told us, with no connection to the conversation being had that she 'could beat up a goose anytime'!

She now refuses to explain her comment.

chipsandgin · 09/03/2021 09:26

We had geese on a property we bought years ago (plus a lone male duck with identity issues, I swear he thought he was one of them, always at the back of the line!). They occasionally decided they’d try & visit indoors on a sunny day & were strongly discouraged (& it was just one spokesgoose asking - definitely a thing 😂!).

We rehoused them to a local lake in the end as the endless ‘take three steps and shit’ routine was so annoying (I’ve never known a creature that poos so prolifically! Unless that was just our geese - or they were saving it all up for the parking area at the front of the house and strutting around doing it on purpose!?). Also the lead goose decided that as my then toddler DS1 was a similar height to him it would take every opportunity to show the tiny human who was boss & front up to him if he ever found DS1 far enough away from us to get away with it...that was the deciding factor in their departure to a new home! They look lovely but are quietly evil IMO ;)
