I know the "poor" place. Let's just say it was very staged.

willibald · 07/03/2021 23:13

@tiredmum2468

My friend is a social worker and was a health visitor she said having 3/4 giant tellys is often prioritised over necessity and essential items

No wonder they're in a mess

Bullshit.
willibald · 07/03/2021 23:15

My friend has epilepsy and works she just deals with it

My hamster's cousin's friend twice removed has no head and she works and just deals with it.

CovidCrow · 07/03/2021 23:26

@Doidontimmm

We were approached to be the “rich” house... we live in a 3 bed house of average cost in the city we live in!! At first we thought we would be the poor house!

You were approached? I thought you had to apply to shows like this?

tiredmum2468 · 07/03/2021 23:27

@willibald
My hamster 🐹 is too busy to work

tiredmum2468 · 07/03/2021 23:28

@iamtheoneandonlyyy

Yes that came across the rich family were very humble and have clearly worked very hard

tiredmum2468 · 07/03/2021 23:29

They could take a couple of the tellys to cash converters and sell them to pay off debts or fill their freezer

There's an idea

forinborin · 07/03/2021 23:32

I had to watch it now after reading the thread. What was the message in the "wash thy neighbour's car" scene, that opportunities were always there, but the poor couple just could not see them?

SeasonFinale · 07/03/2021 23:33

I wonder if we live in the same place as we were approached for this too. Like you ours is a fairly standard house but would classify as a "rich house" based on its price compared to an average price around the country. We declined too. Couldn't think of any programme I would like to be on less.

Yes, that's exactly what it was.
forinborin · 07/03/2021 23:36

Yes, that's exactly what it was.
Oh, how elegant.

It was a tacit, 'Well, if poor people just made opportunities like us, guilting neighbours into paying us, they could magic themselves out of poverty.' Like the telly comment.

That's the first time I see this show, to be honest. I am foreign to the UK, for me as a complete cultural outsider it feels very... American rather than British? It all starts with the first £10 here and the second £10 there, and then you just marry into a rich family and voila, here's your Ferrari.
I am surprised this show is so popular.

Ah the poor bashing bullshit bingo begins...
Reinventinganna · 08/03/2021 00:13

@tiredmum2468 is the friend with epilepsy the social worker or is it a different friend. Asking for a friend.

Famousinlove · 08/03/2021 00:25

If the lady from the 'poor' house can be responsible for two little girls surely there is a job she can do..

user64332 · 08/03/2021 00:35

Yeah the rich house is incredibly mediocre. I'm assuming if they are knocking on doors to recruit they struggle to find 'rich' families and that is hardly surprising.

Was it grief that drove rich husband to success or an early inheritance and marrying into a wealthier family giving him a financial opportunity he wouldn't have otherwise had?

Most financial success is due to luck not hard work.

1forAll74 · 08/03/2021 01:01

The show seems to be staged really, I don't think that the poor man would have spent all that money in the men's outfitters, despite having the amount left for them in the rich house. The programme makers would know that the poor man was going to look at that house building place and needed him to look smart, and also, to present himself look good,when they all meet up at the,and the rich man was going to offer him some help.

BigPaperBag · 08/03/2021 07:40

I loathe this programme.

FoonySpucker · 08/03/2021 09:25

I have never seen it, but gee, d'you think?

Of course it's bloody staged.

ssd · 08/03/2021 09:26

Dh were laughing at the poor house on this one, we said it looks better than ours,what does that make us?!?
I thought both families were lovely though.

CharlotteRose90 · 08/03/2021 09:31

I hated yesterday’s episode. I thought everyone was trying to be something their not. Didn’t show them doing much with the kids either which is sad. Although if I was married to the rich man he’d be out the door he was acting like he’s the one that’s done anything 😂. His wife’s family are the people who have made his life not him. No wonder she controls him.

How's the air up there this morning?
60sbird · 08/03/2021 10:51

I find it hard to believe that the rich family spend over £1200 a week, it seems they were just leaving a big wad of cash to show off

MeadowHay · 08/03/2021 11:10

@MyDcAreMarvel

They didn’t buy treats for the kid because they weren’t allowed to. They do t choose what to spend the money on, the tv company does.
This! Naivety on this thread...don't people realise this show is semi-scripted, like most reality TV shows? The people don't have free rein over it all, for obvious reasons when they're staying in someone else's house.
