To get up at 530 to exercise?

orangejuicer · 07/03/2021 18:58

This would be half an hour before DS gets up so not much difference. I don't find it easy to find time to exercise and I'm really struggling with the lockdown weight.

AIBU to think getting up at 530 to exercise is a good idea?

YABU - you are demented. Why even consider such a thing
YANBU - that's a great use of time!

I get up anywhere from 0310 to exercise - have done so for years and years. Most often around 0430 I would say. It just becomes a habit and I like having it done before the day starts. I do often exercise in the evening too, but as long as I have one session in I feel reasonably OK.

Macncheeseballs · 07/03/2021 20:59

Cant you find 20 mins during the day

3.10! That’s the middle of the night. Well mine not everyone’s

What exercise would you do?

GADDay · 07/03/2021 21:03

Lol. I get up at 4am. Not to exercise but to take a child to sport practice.

5am pffft. My only thought is you won't be able to do much if you wake at 5 and your child wakes at 5.30.

OrangeBananaFish · 07/03/2021 21:07

I often do in the summer. I love an early morning run when everyone else is still in bed. You just know when you run past the houses that the people in the house are still asleep. Its a wonderful feeling.

I don't eat before I go out, just have a drink of water before I go and eat as normal when I come home.

Also agree with PP that if you set an evening time when it comes round to it you just can't be bothered so often miss it. When you get up early in the morning you just do it. Yes there are times when my alarm goes off and I question myself, but I know if I lie there in bed longer I'll only get frustrated with myself for not getting out.

I don't do it in winter though just as there is no light in the countryside where I live (though I do have various head and chest torches along with reflective clothing - I still don't feel 100% safe in the dark)

idontlikealdi · 07/03/2021 21:07

Was y routine per lockdown. Loved it.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/03/2021 21:14

Im up before 5am every weekday to exercise. I do an F45 class at 5.30am, home by 6.30am.

If it's not F45 then it's a long run or similar. I found it's the only time I can dedicate to exercise, it doesn't matter what my good intentions are later in the day, something always comes up.

I'm not going to lie, the first few days were tough, but I go to bed by 9pm so get enough sleep and after a week it's like routine. Nothing like feeling the accomplishment of getting shit done before the sun rises too!

lljkk · 07/03/2021 21:14

let us know how you get on, OP.
the one bit of WFH I hugely appreciate is sleeping as late as possible.

NothingIsWrong · 07/03/2021 21:16

Is exactly what I will be doing. I love to run with a friend of mine but the only time we can meet is 6am due to her work and mine. So that's what we do, bash out 5k three mornings a week

schmalex · 07/03/2021 21:17

I get up at 5.45 every day apart from Sunday to exercise. Sets me up for the day!

riddles26 · 07/03/2021 21:20

I do this - I aim for 3 to 5 times a week and while getting up is so hard (especially when cold), it is a great feeling to have done your exercise for the day first thing. It motivates me to eat better all day (resist the extra bit of junk!) and also to try walk more over the day. Would definitely recommend but try get to bed as early as possible, getting enough sleep is the hardest part.

AtticusF1nch · 07/03/2021 21:22

It's the middle of the night. No. I mean, I'd feel like I'd had the whole day by 9am 😀

wintertime6 · 07/03/2021 21:25

I love getting up early to go for a run, it really sets me up for the day. Now that the mornings are brighter I try to get out for 6:45am for half an hour which just about gives me enough time to get a shower when I get back and get sorted.

AlwaysLatte · 07/03/2021 21:25

YANBU, I'm seriously impressed! I'm not a morning person but when my dog wanted to get up yesterday morning at about 6.00 yesterday (I never get up at 6.00 normally!)!I loved the birdsong. Might try to do it every day!

Rewis · 07/03/2021 21:27

My personal idea of hell. However, it could totally be your thing if your energy levels are up in the morning. So.go for it. If after some time t doesnt work for you then you can change times!

Rewis · 07/03/2021 21:30

That's bedtime for me😅

orangejuicer · 07/03/2021 21:34

I wish. DS wakes at 6 regular as clockwork.

Thanks everyone. I do know I don't need MN's permission to do things. I guess I thought I'd post on a discussion forum, shock horror Grin

I like to exercise in the morning as if I leave it til later I'll just make excuses then and not do it

mamaduckbone · 07/03/2021 21:38

I would love to be able to but absolutely know I couldn't - I'm just not a morning person. I manage 10 minutes of Pilates before I get ready for work and that's only on a good day. If you can do it I'd say go for it.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2021 21:40

I like the idea of it but for running it need to be at the end of the day.

I used to run about 10k home from work. One morning I ran into work and a different story.

I can absolutely see the appeal of quiet streets though esp in summer very early.

ChristOnAPeloton · 07/03/2021 22:00

I can’t imagine anything worse personally- but you do you Smile

GloriaSilver · 07/03/2021 22:02

I do whatever it takes so no, YANBU. I try to see exercise as non negotiable, like an appointment I have.

Instamaticgreenery · 07/03/2021 22:03

I used to do this. I got up at 5am as I needed a coffee before I started! I did it after reading 'the miracle morning' and I did weight workouts. I had amazing results, I'd have an amazing body now if I hadn't stopped doing it after 6 months! 🤣 It was a great way to start the day. I did have to make sure I was in bed by 9 though.

perenniallymessy · 07/03/2021 22:08

I've done it for years, though through lockdown I've been a bit later.

Started when DS2 had that 5am wake up time as a toddler. I decided to use the early starts, so rather than sitting like a zombie with him I'd pop Peppa Pig on the iPad for him and do an exercise DVD.

Once we got gym membership I used to go after school drop off, but once I went back to work (and when DH wasn't working away) it was easier to go back to early mornings.

I tend to go to a class at 6.15, and like a nice cup of tea first, so I get up at 5.30, have a cuppa and ready the news, then get dressed and go. Class is done at 7am, I get home five minutes later, get the DC up and get breakfast then shower before taking DS2 to school.

Main tip is to lay your kit out the night before so you're all ready. When the alarm goes off I get up quickly so it doesn't disturb anyone. I feel more energised and less stressed when I've done my exercise early. Plus no chance to make excuses to not go! And judging by how many people are in the gym when I go, early morning exercise is pretty popular!

QueenofallNorway · 07/03/2021 22:13

Watching for inspiration, I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while but worried about the lack of sleep. I just can’t motivate myself to exercise after work atm.
I generally feel quite sluggish when I wake up, is this something that improves as you go on?
