To get up at 530 to exercise?

orangejuicer · 07/03/2021 18:58

This would be half an hour before DS gets up so not much difference. I don't find it easy to find time to exercise and I'm really struggling with the lockdown weight.

AIBU to think getting up at 530 to exercise is a good idea?

YABU - you are demented. Why even consider such a thing
YANBU - that's a great use of time!

I get up at 5.45am for 30 min yoga or pilates most days. Sets me up for the day

Everydaydragon · 07/03/2021 19:26

I run at 630am atm but my farmer husband will very soon be wanting to start work at 6/630 so I'll start running at 530am to make sure I'm back for the kids

HermioneWeasley · 07/03/2021 19:28

Why would it be unreasonable? If you want to do it, do it.

orangejuicer · 07/03/2021 19:29

I'm not ready to run yet so will be following YouTube videos probably as I do enjoy them. I'm glad so many people do this, I will give it a go!

This. You don't need MNs permission, if you want to exercise first thing then go for it. Unreasonable doesn't come into it.

Yep I do and love it. Husband is an afternoon/ evening exerciser. Apparently some weight loss benefits to exercising fasted IE before you eat. But I don't know much about this.

ChronicallyCurious · 07/03/2021 19:32

YANBU DP often gets up at this time (sometimes earlier) for a work out, (I do mine in the afternoon as I WFH so manage my own schedule luckily as I am not a morning person), and he says he feels so much better in himself and more alert for the day than if he skips the workout.

RonSwansonsChair · 07/03/2021 19:34

If you can do it fair play to you! Give it a go.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/03/2021 19:36

I do it, it means I can change from jammies to grungy workout clothes, take 1 shower a day, and it’s done before I really get started so can’t be put off.

LuubyLuu · 07/03/2021 19:37

It really depends on whether you're an owl or a lark, or not not bothered either way.

I'm an owl and when I tried for a period to exercise first thing as it suited my schedule at the time, it just didn't happen. I was really uncoordinated, and just went through the motions as I didn't have the energy to exercise hard. On the other hand I get an energy boost late evening and would happily exercise at 10pm.

BabyPotato · 07/03/2021 19:37

I used to run every morning at 5.30am because my boss changed my shifts which meant I wouldn't have time to run after work anymore. I was heavily into running at that point and it felt devastating if I couldn't run every day, so I begrudgingly started getting up early to do it. It was amazing! I loved being out when there were few others around AND I felt so good and had so much more energy for the whole day. I absolutely loved it. Would recommend.

Then I busted my knees and I haven't been able to run for about 5 years now. Sad But I'm inspired by this thread and maybe I'll start doing yoga or get on my exercise bike before my child gets up. Halo

oblada · 07/03/2021 19:39

DH does this regularly and sometimes even earlier. But he doesn't need much sleep and wakes up early naturally too. I couldn't do it but that's because it wouldn't work with my body clock.

Run1000km2021 · 07/03/2021 19:39

Do it!!! I do it too and it feels amaaaaazing! Not when the alarm goes off obvs but you’ll feel super smug and energised all day! Highly recommend

teraculum29 · 07/03/2021 19:40

If you have energy levels and feel like it yes go for it.
I cant do much of exercise before 13, cant do it, my stamina is not there tried it several times but when it comes to afternoon or early evening I can do even 2 hour.

Cam2020 · 07/03/2021 19:41

I used to do this all the time until my job required me to get up at 5am to get ready/commute. It might sound early now, but it's just because you're not used to it.

iMatter · 07/03/2021 19:41

Do it

You will feel brilliant for the rest of the day Smile

littlepattilou · 07/03/2021 19:42

Sod that. That's halfway through the night!

FlyingBurrito · 07/03/2021 19:43

This. You don't need MNs permission, if you want to exercise first thing then go for it. Unreasonable doesn't come into it

I was reading the replies wondering why anyone would need to check with strangers what time they should get up, is it some kind of weird lockdown side effect Grin

Why would anyone not get up early if they want to?

garlictwist · 07/03/2021 19:43

I do it, sometimes earlier. And I don't even have kids. It's my preferred time of day.

BackforGood · 07/03/2021 19:47

I personally think you must be demented BUT, it doesn't mean YABU to do it if it suits you.
However, if you want to improve your all round health and wellbeing, depriving yourself of sleep is not the way to go. You already have said he isn't a good sleeper, so
a) I wouldn't be surprised if he hears you and wakes up
and
b) if you are lacking sleep through him waking during the night anyway, then depriving yourself of more does not seem a sensible way to go.

LolaNova · 07/03/2021 19:48

DH used to get up at 4 to cycle to work rather than drive so that he could count it as a training session rather than disrupting family/household duties later in the day. Even now (he’s been on furlough for most of the pandemic) he’ll get up and go for a run or cycle at 5.30/6 so he’s back in to help with the children.

I on the other hand am horrendous in the mornings and require 30 minutes of scrolling and a coffee before I can even get out of bed. I tend to train later in the evening if I can’t find time during the day. It does mean I’m way more likely to skip a session than DH though as if bedtime goes to shit, or the baby is unsettled, or I’m hungry or tired it just doesn’t happen.I’m supposed to be on the turbo trainer right now but instead I’m feeding a baby and thinking about going to sleep ASAP.

duffeldaisy · 07/03/2021 19:50

In the summer last year I got up really early and did some work in the garden. It really helped my mood - I got some light exercise and fresh air, and it was really nice to have headspace.
I say go for it!

Ameliablue · 07/03/2021 19:53

It's entirely up to you, assuming you aren't going to be blaring dance music at top volume as you work out.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 07/03/2021 19:54

I do. I can't exercise in the evening. I talk myself out of it. I just get up and out in the morning, no time to think too much. There's something about feeling that you are the only person up and about.

I really enjoy it, although it can be painful sometimes when I want to just sleep more. But I never regret it.

QuidditchQueen · 07/03/2021 19:58

I live near a river and kayak on it every morning st 5.30 for about 40 mins all thru the year. Perfect reflecting /quiet /me time. Sets me up for the day. Totally recommend early exercise. When it becomes a habit the early start just becomes normal.
