What are your thoughts on giving a child the day off school on their birthday? If they are asking for the day off..

To do what? Won't their friends have school still. I take it you must be speaking of a young child. Definitely not. I would celebrate after school and then on the weekend

This thread has given me some sort of irrational rage.
You can guarantee if you do it once, he will want to be off on his birthday every year.

Yep and if he doesn't like school already, there will be another reason why he can't go in another time and so it goes on. It's a slippery slope
ufucoffee · 06/03/2021 17:00

I used to work in a really rough area and letting children have the day off school on their birthday was a tradition there. If I hear of anyone doing it now I automatically assume it's because they are from somewhere similar.

MrsKeats · 06/03/2021 17:02

Wow this thread is making me so annoyed.
Wouldn't you have the day off if it's your birthday in work??
Err no I'm busy teaching other people's kids so I'm not sure they would appreciate me disappearing.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2021 17:04

Well it's only taken 16 pages for someone to make it a class issue.

Givemeabreak88 · 06/03/2021 17:05

Getting angry at a random stranger on the internet giving their child a day off on their birthday? Got get a life 🙄 I was on another group the other day where someone wanted to give their child 2 days off for a holiday and everyone was telling them to go for it! It’s not like I’m taking him out of school for a holiday, it’s 6 hours.

Would love to know what area has to do with it? So only “rough” people give their kids a day off 🤣

Yup you've been outer Give 🤣 you're clearly (whispers) WC on a sink estate!
MrsKeats · 06/03/2021 17:08

You sound delightful op. And very defensive. Don't ask if you don't want answers.
Funnily enough other people are entitled to their opinions.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2021 17:08

@Givemeabreak88

Yep her birthday is in January, she books it in advance as says it’s a family members wedding.
No teacher would get away with doing that every year.
RootyT00t · 06/03/2021 17:18

What a load of nonsense being spouted . Teachers off the same time every year , getting days off for shopping , aye right.

And OP, teachers are off sometimes because they're SICK. Imagine.

Givemeabreak88 · 06/03/2021 17:18

I’m allowed to defend myself against people throwing insults, you know you CAN give an opinion without name calling or throwing insults, you must really go over the edge for parents that give their children a whole week off for a holiday!

greenlynx · 06/03/2021 17:18

I usually answer no for this type of questions, but the most important info in this situation that he’s additional needs, was at school all this time and doesn’t like school. It was a difficult time to go to school for kids with additional needs so I would allow him this. He needs something special on this day, something fun, something to cheer him up and the options are limited at the moment. You can’t visit anywhere over weekend or have a party so I would go with the only wish he has.
My DD has additional needs, she never has a day off school for her birthday but having a child with additional needs makes you to look at things differently sometimes and to do unpopular choices.

rosiejaune · 06/03/2021 17:20

@FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken

No. If every child did this it means hundreds of extra unauthorised absences which means they get pushed down the ranks in the tables etc. Surely they can celebrate at the weekend
If every child did this, it would make no difference to any ranking tables as all children at all schools would be doing it.
Shelovesamystery · 06/03/2021 17:23

Meh... I'd let mine have the day off school if they wanted to 🤷‍♀️

I've never worked on my birthday, my job is flexible like that. Obviously if it wasn't then I'd just have to work but I've always like having the choice.

Why do you keep talking about what other people are doing? We are talking about you.

Weirdly enough I'd judge a holiday far less than one day for a birthday.

Probably because in the adult world yes we book holidays but could you imagine if I said I need Monday off it's my birthday?

Givemeabreak88 · 06/03/2021 17:28

Ok maybe I will keep him off for a week then and call it a holiday if that gets less judgement 🤔🤣

I don’t understand why you would ask for peoples opinions when you already made your mind up that you are determined keep him at home on his birthday.

Givemeabreak88 · 06/03/2021 17:31

I wasn’t before I actually posted, it was the nasty rude and plain spiteful comments that made me think fuck it I will keep him home! Like I said you can give an opinion without being down right rude.

But that’s exactly what I do @RootyT00t - and the reply is ‘awwww are you doing anything nice?’

Not every job has the same rules around when to use your AL. I have never worked my birthday in more than 10
companies.

So you wanted to keep your own son off school to prove a point to MN . Odd.

Fine if you work in that kind of industry. The vast majority of people don't.
tiredmum2468 · 06/03/2021 17:33

No chance

Givemeabreak88 · 06/03/2021 17:33

He wants the day off, it’s one day. Was only asking if others do it! And it seems some do some don’t. I will.
