DS asked for some crisps for a snack, I said yes he could have some. DH started going on and on about how he should have grapes instead, or kiddilicious baby crisps.

I do all meals and snacks for both, as DH working in study.

I really try my best to cook with the children, encourage plenty of fruit and veg in their diet, and every so often if my son asks for crisps, say yes. I can't get worked up about it, but DH says they will make DS 'uncultured' Hmm

'uncultured' Grin I assumes he would be complaining about nutrition.

A pack of French Fries contains about 12g carbs, a cup of grapes contains 20+g sugar.
Crisps for the win!

@thefishthatcouldwish

Have you actually eaten kiddicious crisps ? I find them vile
Only to be eaten during fits of extreme ravenous hunger when bf and unable to reach/access better snacks I may have eaten quite a lot of these

If your DH knows so much then put him in charge of food making and snacking. Bet he soon changes his tune.

On the other hand, if he's happy giving your child a complex about food (SO easily done and so potentially damaging) maybe he should research the effects of this attitude on eating disorders

Has someone really suggested making your own crisps in an air fryer rather than chucking a bag of french fries at the lid?

For reference, space raiders are uncultured. They used to be like, 10p in the corner shop. Very common.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 07/03/2021 18:27

Kid...not lid.

Blueberries0112 · 07/03/2021 18:38

Yes, sorry but I think they taste better and healthier. I am not going to stop my kids from enjoying French fries but I know it’s not good for you if you keep eating them (sorry I can’t help myself, heart disease run in my family)

Blueberries0112 · 07/03/2021 18:50

Surely French fries are skinny chips? (Chips as in Brit-speak, not as in American-speak where they call crisps, chips.)
Never heard of Brit type crisps being called French fries. —-

I thought op meant French fries where it is made from potatoes sliced up and fried in oil . Although potato chips is the same way but cut thinner. And of course I am American so I keep getting everything confused. I should find a message board that’s U.S. based , but I hate being stuck to my own region, I don’t learn anything about other countries this way

A child eating crisps...how uncouth!
LTB!

Here’s my list:

Worse for being cultured

  • space radars
  • pom bears (bloody love these)
  • wotsits / quavers
  • regular crisps
  • unsalted (add your own salt crisps. Always thought these were posh 🤣)
  • posh big bags tyrels etc
  • baked crisps or sensations
Most cultured

Wonder where popcorn would sit?

Freezeboy · 07/03/2021 19:14

@Blueberries0112 it’s these bad boys and they pretty epic

Sandwich, Pom bears/quavers/cheddars and fruit is a perfectly acceptable lunch for a child! And you can tell DH the advice my PT gave me which is if you're going to eat grapes you might as well eat a bag of haribo in regards to what it does to your teeth and glucose/fat levels etc! X

MistressoftheDarkSide · 07/03/2021 19:25

"Uncultured"....... well only if he's eating them loudly in a box at the opera or ballet perhaps?

Reminds me of my dear departed Mother who had an instant aversion to Eastenders when it came out and I was a teenager - it was Verboten. Corrie was alright, but not Eastenders.

Fast forward a few years when life had become quite stressful and we'd all be eating dinner on our laps in front of the TV with a schedule of rotating soaps including Eastenders...... it's all about not sweating the small stuff I reckon.

I really want crisps now. Uncultured crisps that I shall shovel in wearing my dressing gown and watching Broadchurch in bed.

I'm never going to be a good example, but like the idea of being a terrible warning..... Grin

ArtfulScreamer · 07/03/2021 21:19

My 2 year old loves a wotsit in all there illuminous orange glory, well in fairness they're aldi rip offs so even less cultured than a wotsit. I've tried to give her more cultured crisps like kettle chips but she just licks the flavour off and puts them back in the packet Envy (not envy). Did you keep a straight face at your DHs comment.
