Aibu to give my nearly 4 yo a pack of french fries?

DS asked for some crisps for a snack, I said yes he could have some. DH started going on and on about how he should have grapes instead, or kiddilicious baby crisps.

I do all meals and snacks for both, as DH working in study.

I really try my best to cook with the children, encourage plenty of fruit and veg in their diet, and every so often if my son asks for crisps, say yes. I can't get worked up about it, but DH says they will make DS 'uncultured' Hmm

Get an air fryer , make your own French fries. Don’t let her get started on fries soak in processed oil

Larryslockdownlunch · 05/03/2021 16:07

I only really eat crisps when I've been drinking ......

DuzzyFuck · 05/03/2021 16:07

On a scale of unculturedness which would be the worst offenders? Monster Munch maybe, or Space Raiders?

Those posh walkers ones in the black packets must be at the least uncultured end of the scale surely? On inspection they're even made with REAL ingredients, as opposed to the fake ones that are presumably used to make hula hoops?

Thanks for the laugh OP, I hope DS enjoyed every single French Fry!

endlesswicker · 05/03/2021 16:07

When my dc were that aged I used to decant a few crisps into a bowl and give them those so I could eat the rest of the packet myself

MyLittleOrangutan · 05/03/2021 16:07

"Uncultured"?? Well he sounds like a twat. I hate people that are so worried about looking better than everyone else all the time.

NothingIsWrong · 05/03/2021 16:09

I'm going to need a scale of crisp culture here to see how bad we are on the scale. Morrison's own here with the occasional pack of Wotsits...

YesItsAPeacock · 05/03/2021 16:12

If French Fries are uncultured then call me a pleb.

And hand me a packet, please. If Sir Fancypants doesn't want them, that's his look out.

Laeta · 05/03/2021 16:16

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

😢🙄tell him the Queen eats crisps, so he should ask her she what she thinks of his 'uncultured' bollocks!

No idea if she does or not, but neither does he 🤣& you can legitimately say you read it somewhere 🤣🤣

This really really made me laugh!! Thanks :)

funinthesun19 · 05/03/2021 16:17

Uncultured Grin WTF?

My 2 year old had some Dexter the Dog crisps earlier (Morrisons version of Pom Bears I think). I have no worries about her. Grin

Undies1990 · 05/03/2021 16:21

Biscuit for your DH

Hope your DS enjoyed his crisps!

NotFabulousDarling · 05/03/2021 16:37

Of course French Fries aren't uncultured. They're French!

GrannyGrunter · 05/03/2021 16:47

@maddiemookins16mum

My cats paws smell of Wotsits.
Underrated comment 😁😁
Liquorishtoffee · 05/03/2021 16:48

DH once gave me a version of cheesy whotits from his childhood. My hands were orange for days. God knows what they did to my stomach!

HavelockVetinari · 05/03/2021 17:23

I reckon that M&S kettle-cooked crisps are the most cultured (or least uncultured) option, apart from the game chips served at some high-end restaurants.

Clearly cheapo wotsit knock-offs are high on the uncultured list.

I feel like there should be some kind of formal Mumsnet crisp ranking exercise.

Liquorishtoffee · 05/03/2021 17:26

I recently was given a tub of Yorkshire crisps - a tub of crisps! Very cultured. I almost ate them whilst white gloves and with silver serving tongs...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/03/2021 17:31

Mmmmm Pom bears are the best.

The MN ranking would start with Fuck off posh artisan crisps from some handcrafted hipster. Followed by Waitrose and M and S

Liquorishtoffee · 05/03/2021 17:33

I remember in Spain you used to (maybe still do) see a shop window of crisps and you’d go in, select your cone size and get a big scoop. Mmmmmmm.

Surlyburd · 05/03/2021 17:50

Haha, your ds will be fine. Your dh is being silly.

Amiable · 05/03/2021 17:53

Call the "frites" and tell you DH you are teaching DS french.

Is that cultured enough do you think?!Wink

PrtScn · 05/03/2021 18:49

Gosh, this thread has made me wonder what happened to wheat crunchies, I used to love the spicy tomato flavour.
Anyway, DS is 2 and a bit and loves Skips. We are very uncultured here, and I let him have a poppadom with his tea tonight which he dunked in the mango chutney. I must be going to hell Grin

TheJerkStore · 05/03/2021 18:52

Uncultured..... bloody hell.
We love crisps in this house I didn't realise I was being judged for that.

He sounds like a twat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/03/2021 18:56

Surely French fries are skinny chips? (Chips as in Brit-speak, not as in American-speak where they call crisps, chips.)
Never heard of Brit type crisps being called French fries.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 05/03/2021 18:56

Grin I kind of love your posts OP

I quite regularly say something outloud and then realise I already know the answer and its face palm.

You clearly already know your DH is nucking futs and if DP said this to me I would be doubled over laughing asking him what crisps were in fact culturally acceptable Grin

I mean where do we stand on kettle chips? They used to be deemed terribly sophisticated but seem to have gone the way of proseccoin the cultural bias.

You've made me smile though so thank you Grin

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 19:00

No biggy as an occasional treat BUT

Look at the calories in a whole packet. It's a lot for a young child as a snack. I would give no more than half (and more likely less).

Crisps are one of the worst things for teeth - think about all the little bits of nice starchy stuff that gets stuck in every crevice of your teeth. I wouldn't give them between meals for that reason.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 19:01

I would be doubled over laughing asking him what crisps were in fact culturally acceptable grin. I mean where do we stand on kettle chips? They used to be deemed terribly sophisticated but seem to have gone the way of proseccoin the cultural bias.

Now you want Pipers for sophistication
