Joggers should be banned from paths and pavements

As a car driver I find that the occasional cyclist breaks highway codes, cycles dangerously, or cycles without care and consideration. Key word being occasional, so no biggie. Just like how the occasional car diver is a .

But as a pedestrian going for a stroll in the park, the number of rude, selfish, careless and aggressive joggers i've seen is ridiculous high.

I see a jogger coming towards me, I walk to the side/edge of the path, but joggers always decide to keep running straight down the middle....

Similar to the above, joggers not keep a safe distance, and actually brushing past me.

And lastly, the worst offenders, joggers running side by side taking up the whole path, coming towards me, and giving me looks as if im supposed to jump out the way and off the path. ***

I honestly think legislation should be brought in to ban jogging on paths and pavements. Restricting joggers to grassland/cross country, outdoor tracks, private land, and the gym. The same way that cycling isnt permitted on pavements.

AIBU?

I'm a runner and the amount of walkers who don't understand what side of the road they should be walking on is astonishing. (I live in the countryside not many pavements). I move in to the road always, no one says thank you, even when they are on the wrong side. Most runners I know are the ones who are considerate. The families walking 4 abreast and not moving over are the problem.

@sliders this echoes my own experience completely

XenoBitch · 05/03/2021 16:39

@fiveoldteddies

My DC gets really frustrated when running and a family group not making any space but continue to walk 4 aside each other.
I have been pushed into the traffic on main road by multiple mums out with massive pushchairs... they wont go in single file.

You want people to be made illegal to stop them giving you funny looks??

You need to work on your resilience.

MRex · 05/03/2021 16:41

Thanks @BalancedIndividual, we'll try it out one day then!

DownToTheSeaAgain · 05/03/2021 16:41

What is it with the constant running hate speech and why is it acceptable on Mumsnet?

We live on a crowded little island. Let's just be a bit more tolerant of each other.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 05/03/2021 16:41

@ItsMarch

This week a jogger run into my toddler who couldn’t get out the way in time. They then swore at us. I’m with you OP. Bunch of wankers.
So one jogger makes you think all are a "bunch of wankers". Lets hope your attitude does not rub off onto your toddler.
Everydaydragon · 05/03/2021 16:42

Yabu.
I say that as someone who runs on quiet country roads from my house. Thing is people also enjoy walking on country trails. Plus I know my friends who enjoy running in the countryside have to do a mile in the town first to get to the open space. Do you suggest they drive that mile and dump their car?

LucieStar · 05/03/2021 16:43
@LucieStar

Actually, if im being honest, ive come across this as well from fellow pedestrians in my park.

Now that I think about it, I guess the joggers stick more in my memory than walkers, due to the fear of getting run / pushed over.

Tbh, it could just be my park has too many wrong-uns....both walkers and joggers.

(Before anyone tries to be smart, that doesnt include me. Xd. I honestly just want to go for a walk, being considerate to others, and have others do the same for me.)
Funny you should mention being pushed over, as I was once running along a path in my local park happily minding my own business, and someone's huge dog came bounding at me (off lead) from out of nowhere, jumped up at me and knocked me off balance.

And incidentally, in turn, I've never knocked anyone over with my running. Smile

BalancedIndividual · 05/03/2021 16:44

@Robintakeover

Perhaps you are right. I dont come across this anywhere near as often in another park, 2 miles away. Maybe its just the park and locals who are the problem.

(But the other park is also 90% less busy, so not entirely a fair comparison though)

OP I think you need to just stay at home...outside is too much for you. Stay at home and no one will bother you.

This is not only joggers though. I live on the doorstep of Sutton Coldfield park. I run and walk regularly. I cannot tell you how congested the park has been over the weekends the past few months. There is only a certain amount of space on the paths. All groups are guilty but even worse are these tedious threads about it.
StrawberrySquash · 05/03/2021 16:45

I've come across plenty of inconsiderate walkers while out walking myself. AIBU to suggest that no one is allowed to walk outside apart from me. Seriously, joggers are not that bad in general

Is it running hate speech or more general irritation with inconsiderate so and so’s who just won’t deviate from their personal path, come what may, be they strollers, walkers, joggers, runners or cyclists?

I see them all and think the general rule of thumb really ought to be, if you’re physically more capable or coming up on someone from behind, you really should get out of their way.

Agree with the various comments that several people astride the footpath, whatever their method, are a total PITA.

SimonJT · 05/03/2021 16:49

My luminous orange running shorts do make me look extremely aggressive and intimidating.

What speed limit are you suggesting? Will we be allowed to increase our speed when running downhill?

Have you thought about leaving some banana skins on the pavement so we slip over, that may help your cause.

GreenlandTheMovie · 05/03/2021 16:50

Has this country gone completely crazy? What people even think like this?

I tried levitating to my local running track yesterday. It was admittedly not entirely successful, but then I found it was closed. Due to the current pandemic.

I was however snarled at and nearly bitten by one of the 3 loose dogs accompanying a walker wearing headphones, unable to hear my polite request as to whether it was safe to pass him or not. Social distancing maintained at all times.

So does my pink Lycra Grin

I know, its getting depressing on here.

You never see so many posts about hating drivers that kill, or burglars or similar, but there are constant, aggressive, hatred filled posts about people exercising.

As a runner, I always move into the road. Most rude pedestrians won’t go signs file so I have to go right into the middle of the toad to do the 2m. I don’t know what a jogger is? Pheobe on Friends maybe? But as a runner, I am always polite. Why should we be banned?
LuvSmallDogs · 05/03/2021 16:53

Lol at it being worse for joggers to move onto rough terrain due to their speed. They can slow down? 😂

The aggressive looking ones ive come across usually have tribal arm band tattoos, stand around 6 foot, and look like in-shape stella drinkers (a paradox, xd).

If you dont have 2 out of 3 of the above, im sure youre fine.

So I'm walking down the street and realise I'm late for my appointment, does that mean I'm not allowed to run?
Probably not.
islockdownoveryet · 05/03/2021 16:55

Seriously have a word with yourself.

Sorry, Greenland, that wasn’t me, I was quoting a PP (just haven’t worked out bolding yet).

I’ve no problem at all with any kind of exercise, personally. Walk myself (wish I could still run) don’t like anyone inconsiderate though, whatever they’re doing.

Vargas · 05/03/2021 16:59

I went for a walk in a busy London park this morning, I was probably passed by a hundred joggers. Not one of them displayed the behaviour you describe. How odd.
