To wash things after one wear?

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 11:40

I know it is terrible for the environment however even though I shower every morning and my children shower daily I feel our clothes are ready for the wash at the end of the day!
We have a dog so I am usually covered in dog hairs/mud from walking her. I also have loose covers on the couch which get taken off and washed twice weekly because of said dog.
I am doing at least 2-3 loads of washing and drying a day. AIBU?

Why don't you have dedicated dog walking clothes that you reuse a few times if they are going to get muddy straight away and you only wear them for a short period of time?

Bananalanacake · 05/03/2021 17:52

I also laugh at those who wash everything after one wear and whine about how much washing they have. I wear t shirts and trousers 3 or 4 times, wash cardigans and jumpers once a month as I'm not wearing them all day. Bedding and towels every 2 weeks. I also refuse to have a tumble dryer, big waste of electricity and they wear out clothes.

ElderMillennial · 05/03/2021 17:55

I don't need to wash my clothes daily. I wear jeans at least twice. I often wear t shirts twice too and they don't smell even when I put them in the wash after the second day. I will wash them sooner if I've done exercise or got sweaty on a walk or if cooking smells are a bit much. If you have a dog and are muddy then you probably need to wash your clothes.

Pinkfreesias · 05/03/2021 17:57

Not good for the environment or your electric & shopping bills!

If I've worn something for just a couple of hours, I'd use a freshener spray rather than wash it. I'd only pop it in the wash if I'd felt hot & sweaty or I'd worn it all day.

@Bananalanacake why would laugh at others? Reading posts OP has not whined.

Nollopian · 05/03/2021 18:04

If your clothes are dirty they need washing, regardless of how long you have worn them for. There is nothing wrong with being clean

rawalpindithelabrador · 05/03/2021 18:05

Just do it if you can afford it and it suits you. Go for it.

BackforGood · 05/03/2021 18:08

@YesItsAPeacock

Seems like a massive waste of time, money and environmental resources.

You'll get a good long thread of people telling you the same thing and you'll ignore them all, I dare say.

I can't write a better answer than the 2nd reply you had.

I've read through all your posts and it still seems to stand up.

Yes to pants and socks needing washing after each day, but not a lot else does.

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 18:40

"@BackforGood Yes to pants and socks needing washing after each day, but not a lot else does."

@BackforGood i hope you never have an asthmatic child. The level of washing, cleaning and mattress cleansing that has to be undertaken in order to assist your son's breathing is vast. Pants and socks wont cut it!

Op does not her want her house, herself or her DC's to smell of dog. @BackforGood smell as awful and fusty as you like. Don't inflict your stinky stench on others.

Op maintains well laundered, fresh smelling clothes & home. Good luck to her and her washing machine.

lazylinguist · 05/03/2021 18:44

Some items do actually need to be washed for longer and at higher temps. Washing at a lower temp will not always be appropriate and / or kill bacteria.

Define 'need'. I'm 50 and wash everything at 30 or 40 degrees. What terrible consequence is likely to befall me from failing to wash things at higher temperatures, and why has it waited half a century to do so?

lazylinguist · 05/03/2021 18:49

The article linked upthread pointed out that many scientists claim that over-cleanliness may actually be responsible for the increase in asthma and allergies. So, while I am very sympathetic to anyone who genuinely has to do extra cleaning and washing due to family members with existing asthma or allergies, I think it's a bit irresponsible for posters to encourage others to indulge in excessive cleanliness.

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 18:52

@lazylinguist i did try to post NHS guidance link in my prev post. Will try again.

Apart from jeans and coats etc i presumed everyone washed their clothes after one wash. Why would you shower/bath and put your clothes on from day before. Yuk only on Mn

Er no, actually happens in real life! Washing all clothing after one wear is just ridiculous. It seems to me it's only on MN that people are so pathetic with a perceived lack of cleanliness/hygiene when - gasp with horror - some people wear their clothing more than once without washing it Shock

Do you want to know something even more shocking - sometimes people occasionally go more than one day without bathing/showering!!!!!

Utter rubbish!! I live in NZ and it is very common here for everything to be washed in cold water - washing powder is designed for this. I don't believe we are any more riddled with bacteria than anyone else.

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 19:23

I really think you can't win on here sometimes, the number of posts complaining about people that smell and that they should shower more and wear clean clothes is huge!
Not once have I whinged about the amount of washing I do and I haven't insulted anyone's standards!
I am always anxious about the cleanliness of my house (the way it looks and feels/smells rather than germs!) and how I present myself so I do think the way I do things is to avoid judgement....

UserTwice · 05/03/2021 19:27

I don't think anyone has said that you shouldn't wash clothes if they smell? I'm fairly sure that that was one of the criteria (along with dirty) that meant the definitely needed a wash!

CaffineismyBFF · 05/03/2021 20:01

...another one here for one wear then wash.

Hubby and I were talking about this the other day. Everyday clothes are washed after one wear, PJs every other day, bedding every week and coats when I can be bothered unless it has rained heavy / dirty from kids playing outdoors. Some days I'm on 3 or 4 loads a day but my washing machine and tumble dryer are used pretty much every day.

blowinahoolie · 05/03/2021 20:19

I wash my trousers every other day. Unnecessary to be washed every day. Over kill! I have a St Bernard who is slobbery so I am perhaps slobber blind🤷 I think life is too short to sweat the small stuff

Sootybear · 05/03/2021 20:27

Children's clothes should be washed everyday as they get filthy , but for myself I would wear jeans, skirts , jumpers over the top of t shirts, leggings etc for several days before washing them. Firstly to cut down on washing but also I don't get so grubby as a small child. I don't wash towels all the time and sheets etc every week and a half maybe. Again it all depends how dirty things get. I never have a set time for anything. Washing clothes so often is not good for your clothes or the environment obviously. It all sounds so stressful. How do you find the time to have fun?

DeeCeeCherry · 05/03/2021 20:34

Why don't you have old casual clothes for dog walking? I can't fathom how youre dirty and muddy every day.

As for all that sorting and loading and putting away daily washing, you must have nothing much else going on I suppose.

Some people are utterly germ-phobic but understandably dress it up as something else. Hopefully the phobia doesn't impact others in the household, especially children.

Wrenna · 05/03/2021 20:46

In the summer I wash all my stuff after one wearing. I have a physical job and even with showering daily, fresh clothes and deodorant I still sweat and smell of BO. I might be able to get away with my jeans two or three times but we have a pond and even being super careful, I can’t help getting pond water on me, it won’t smell right away but the next day I horrify myself when I smell fishy!

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 20:48

Hahaha, anyone that knows me knows I am not germ phobic... it is literally smells and looks that I go off

And as for having little else to do I work full time and have two kids and a dog so I think I have plenty going on Grin

My DM used to change into her dog walking clothes every time to avoid getting mud etc. on her good clothes. That seems like a solution.

I wash underwear, socks, tights, tops and leggings after one wear. All other items when they need it. I live alone and do probably 3 loads of laundry a week, that includes bedding and towels so usually two loads of clothes separated into darks/lights/colours.
