To wash things after one wear?

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 11:40

I know it is terrible for the environment however even though I shower every morning and my children shower daily I feel our clothes are ready for the wash at the end of the day!
We have a dog so I am usually covered in dog hairs/mud from walking her. I also have loose covers on the couch which get taken off and washed twice weekly because of said dog.
I am doing at least 2-3 loads of washing and drying a day. AIBU?

I honestly find these threads almost the most depressing of any of the topics on MN.

It’s completely unreasonable to wash everything after one wear. I wash contact clothes (tops, knickers, socks, sportswear) after one wear. Everything else after 2-3. I’ve a few woolly jumpers which I don’t think have ever been washed - wool naturally repels dirt. Pyjamas and bedding once a week - I do not wear pjs around the house and no shoes upstairs.

Germs are good for humans. A little bit of bacteria is good for our immune systems. It has been scientifically proven that children who grow up in houses wiped in anti bac manically are more likely to have allergies and hay fever. But hey, they’re clean right!!

And to the woman who washes everything after one wear and doesn’t care that her clothes tire out quickly - shame on you.

Let’s all just ruin the planet for our babies and also make sure they are allergic to being outside. Jesus Christ.

Anoisagusaris · 05/03/2021 14:37

I’m WFH and wear sports leggings and a hoody days. TMI but there is definitely a bit of whiff from the crotch of my leggings at the end of the day. Hoody/sweatshirt usually is a bit grubby from cooking. So they both get washed everyday, as so my vest tops and pjs (I getting night sweats lately).

Jeans and jumpers don’t get washed every day. Other tops/shirts that sit close to my armpits can be a bit whiffy too - it’s not bad BO just a worn smell. So I like to wash them too.

1forAll74 · 05/03/2021 14:37

It is not necessary to wash everything every day, unless you are addicted to doing so. Anyone would think that whole families worked down the coal mines, with the amount of washing that people do.

Notavegan · 05/03/2021 14:39

Yabu, I do about 3 loads a week

lazylinguist · 05/03/2021 14:45

That is a very useful article, rainskylight, and a great thing to post in response to the strange belief often perpetuated on MN that bacteria=bad. When will people finally get their heads around the fact that being super-clean is actually not at all good for you?

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 05/03/2021 14:58

I try not to wash things too much, especially nicer things that I don't want to wear out quickly!

Underwear and socks after one wear, loose fitting jumpers I won't wash until I've worn them several times. It depends how close clothes have been to my armpits- I don't have BO and shower daily but sometimes things just smell 'worn'. Maybe febreze would be good for this 😁

I'd love to wash jeans less but I love my skinnies and find that after one or maybe two wears if pushing it, they go a bit baggy or not as tight as I'd like anyway. Do other people not have this problem?

Towels get washed once or twice a week, bedding once a week.

Soontobe60 · 05/03/2021 15:01

@DinosaurDigestive

I wash everything every day as well.

I do plenty of other things for the environmental and I am much happier with nice, fresh snelling clothes for myself and children.

I also wash towels after every use Grin

Really? surely if you’ve used towels to dry yourself after a shower, they're only getting wet, not dirty? I wash my towels once a week - whether they need it or not 🤣
lazylinguist · 05/03/2021 15:05

Maybe other people don't particularly care. Or maybe they find them more comfortable when they are a bit less tight! Grin

Lightwindows · 05/03/2021 15:25

This is a bit excessive OP. Only underwear/socks need washing daily. I would wear a t shirt again the next day in cooler weather when you don't get sweaty, wash every day in hot weather and jeans/jumpers etc can go a few days without a wash unless actually dirty. Others on here would wash more than that but with regards to bacteria - I'm not Ill any more often than anyone else. And exposure to some germs is good for immunity as far as I understand.
Think you need a different solution for dog hair - can you just have one blanket and train dog to just sit on that blanket on the sofa rather than covering up everything. And then try and just wash it once a week. Other good suggestions re having clothes just for dog walking.
I have a toddler and baby whose clothes get dirty every day , and do 5-6 loads a week. How do you get it all dry???

mummywantstobeslim · 05/03/2021 15:32

We wash all clothes after one wear, kids get grubby and people sweat. No guilt here. It's nice to wear clean clothes every day.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 15:32

Yanbu to wash muddy/stained/soiled/smelly clothes.

Yabu to be needing to run 2-3 loads a day. Get better waterproofs to cover your clothes/protect from mum (waterproofs can just be left muddy).

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 15:34

Ps I do about 6 loads a week and two of those are nappies (I've got a 1 yr old plus a 4 year old). Towels get washed once a week, bedding every other week.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 15:36

Period underwear and a cooking apron can sort both these issues.

wishes1111 · 05/03/2021 15:43

I'm not ashamed to admit I've worn the same loungewear all week WFH.

Shower or bath every day, deodorant and clean knickers every day and they don't smell, they are quite a loose fit though.

Dog hair visible on a clean jumper etc I just lint roll it. Jumpers that have been worn over a top don't get washed often either.

CatOnAHotTinHoof · 05/03/2021 15:43

@JustGiveMeGin
I presume you dry these 14-21 weekly washes in a rumble dryer?
Do you actually consider the impact you're having on the environment?

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 15:52

Hmm okay I'm hearing everyone, with regards to time we usually do one load in the morning before work and then another one/two in the evening depending how much we have.
I always wash full loads and it's at 40 degrees.
It's not even that I'm a germ phobe! It's more a freshness issue for me, think its because I wasn't kept particularly clean as a child so I've gone too far the other way...

Op i wash after every use. I do a darks( that days clothes) and a whites ( pants, towels , shirts etc ) hot wash everyday. I also smoke, not many and always outside but would hate to smell of stale smoke. People are often surprised to learn i smoke as they say i never smell of it! Dc's have a clean full uniform everyday ( wear one wash one) , or days clothing/pj's.

I also wash light puffa type jackets and sch blazers at least twice a month- always fine. I have no tumble dryer so line dry in the summer and radiators/clothes horse/airing cupboard in winter. I do have a 4th bedroom never used , so hang clothes in there to dry usually, out of the way. I do throws and fleecy blankets etc weekly, they can make a room smell stale after a while.

I would hate to put todays clothes on tomorrow or whenever if not washed. They do pick up debris, dead skin cells ( including other peoples) , dust, dirt sweat etc. I am on a water meter so only downside really is cost. There are lots of environmentally friendly laundry products avail but they are pricy. To me, the cost for the water and products is worth it. If you like clean clothes each time and don't mind the additional chore, there is nothing wrong in that.

NoSquirrels · 05/03/2021 15:54

@Hangingover

I also wash towels after every use

Just WHY though??? Grin

Are you a lizard? Do you shed a whole skin after each bath?

Grin
JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 15:55

CatOnAHotTinHoof yes, I think I mentioned in my first post that we dried in the tumble dryer

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 15:59

@CatherineofOnandon I think you get me! I admitted I knew it wasn't great for the environment (I've been on an aeroplane twice in my life, I wonder how many of those telling me I'm killing the planet go abroad every year Hmm)
I wondered what the consensus was and now I know.....I'm apparently crazy Grin

I wear a clean t shirt and underwear every day but often wear bottoms and outerwear multiple times. I live on a farm and still manage to not wreck the environment with 3 washes a day, and my house is never coated in mud or animal hair. Hmm

Stellaris22 · 05/03/2021 16:10

YABU and using your dog as an excuse. I have a dog and have dog walking clothes that get worn repeatedly eg a dog walking coat and trousers. I know they'll get muddy so just wear them repeatedly for walking the dog.

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 16:14

@JustGiveMeGin it is a hard one. Prob if you could, could you cut down on the tumble dryer? Also, one of my Dc's has asthma so house cleaning and washing is one of the tools i use to minimise attacks as dust etc is a trigger.

I also am just very clean generally and house proud and that all probably feeds in. I make time for cleaning and washing everyday but appreciate that is not everyone's bag.

Personally OP i think you are my tribe , so you will get no disagreement from me. You sound like you are aware of the environmental impact and reduce yr carbon footprint in other areas where you can. Maybe a swap to enviro friendly products and a little less tumble dry and see how you go. I personally would not have dirty clothes/throws etc hanging around or up, even if they were outer garments used to protect other garments etc. They themselves will still be minging!

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 05/03/2021 16:19

What sort of dog do you have OP?

Is there a way to lessen the amount of hair they're shedding (regular brushing making sure to get the undercoat, or taking to a groomer in "normal times" for a special cut), or do you just have very high standards?

Are you expecting to effectively be fully dog hair free?
