To wash things after one wear?

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 11:40

I know it is terrible for the environment however even though I shower every morning and my children shower daily I feel our clothes are ready for the wash at the end of the day!
We have a dog so I am usually covered in dog hairs/mud from walking her. I also have loose covers on the couch which get taken off and washed twice weekly because of said dog.
I am doing at least 2-3 loads of washing and drying a day. AIBU?

Yes, I do the same as Stellaris - I have an allotment and have some muddy allotment clothes that I wear a few times before washing. I don’t wash them every time they get a bit of dirt on them because they’d wear out.
I also wash everything at 30 - could you at least do that as a compromise? On some of my clothes labels it says ‘if I’m not dirty wash me at 30’ and it sounds like your clothes don’t get very dirty before you wash them so really don’t need to be on 40.

CounsellorTroi · 05/03/2021 16:23

I am gobsmacked at those one-wear washers who say "so what if my clothes wear out, I'll just buy new". Are you made of money?

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 16:25

I did forget to mention that I line dry when possible in summer so hopefully that helps.
My dog is a spaniel so not particularly hairy, just seems magnetically attracted to my clothes Grin
I am going to have a think and see what I can cut back on!

Yanbu, because of the your dog and if it is a short gentle cycle. A long long time ago I dated someone with a dog and I had to wash my clothes after visiting.

QueenPaw · 05/03/2021 16:31

I think it's common sense really. So if I was going to the stables and I had worn breeches the day before and they had a bit of mud or hair, yes I would wear them again because they're only going to get dirty again! But I would wear a clean top because I would have probably got sweaty riding
Towels I wash once a week and hang to dry in between, bedding I do weirdly Blush change pillowcases weekly with the bottom sheet and do the duvet cover every 10 days

PattyPan · 05/03/2021 16:32

Also, my house came with a tumble dryer but I got rid of it because they’re bad for the environment. I do an extra spin cycle for heavily wet things like jeans and towels and then dry on the line or on airers. Spin cycles take less energy than tumble drying so if you did that first at least you’d need less time in the TD.
If you use a condenser tumble dryer that causes about 1.7kg of CO2 emissions per use. If you use it 2x a day then over a year you’ve emitted 1.2 tons of CO2, more than a London to NYC flight which is about 1 ton per passenger, or driving 2500 miles which is also about a ton.

99victoria · 05/03/2021 16:32

I'm always fascinated by these threads where people say they wash their clothes and towels after one use.
Out of interest OP, how often do you wash your coats and jackets?

PattyPan · 05/03/2021 16:32

London to NYC round trip, that is.

Stellaris22 · 05/03/2021 16:38

Are you washing the towels after every time someone uses them? Or once a day? It's still a little excessive, but if it's after one person uses a towel (with tumble dryer use) then that's unnecessary.

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 05/03/2021 16:43

@emilyfrost

YANBU. I wash everything after one wear apart from jeans. I don’t care if it wears them out quicker as I’ll just buy new 🤷‍♀️
I suppose you wash your six children's clothes after every trip out in your 4x4, too. Hmm

People are obviously going to do as they wish (although two to three loads a day is madness) but it's irksome to be so bloody proud of washing things after each wear.

diagold4u · 05/03/2021 16:46

I always wash after one wear. Unless for example I wore clothes to drop dc to school, came home and got changed in to lounge wear, I then would have no problem putting the same clothes back on when I next went out.
For my children I've always done this, it was done subconsciously, until one day dh (typical man) dressed dc in yesterday's clothing, I felt so grossed out like he wore that yesterday, how can you put it on him again today, is when I realised that I put everything in the wash after one wear even though it's not dirty and was probably only worn for a couple of hours.
When I shower I can't wear the same clothes again even though the clothes I have only just put on, maybe been an hour, I think it's to do with your clean now and should wear fresh clothing.

Blueskytoday06 · 05/03/2021 16:49

I wash clothes after one wear. Towels and bedding I'm afraid to say no as often as they should.

FeistySheep · 05/03/2021 16:52

I have a brush in the porch which I use to brush dog hair off (hairy collie).
Walking clothes get very muddy and washed every couple of weeks.

Me and DH generate one wash per week combined (excluding towels and sheets). DH does a dirty job so wears one pair of trousers to work all week - what's the point of clean clothes every day if they get dirty immediately?
We wash everything at 30 for a half hour wash and it all gets perfectly clean. The only exception is if there's anything oily on something, you need 40 for that.

You say you wash a jumper after every wear? Do you also wash your outside jackets after every wear? If not why not - how are they different to jumpers?

Disadvantages of excessive washing: knackers your clothes, wastes your time and money, and destroys our planet. Advantages: none.

ExConstance · 05/03/2021 17:05

I have a dog, I change into old joggers and sweatshirt when I get home to cuddle her on the sofa. The sofa blankets get done once a week. I work in an office and don't wear the same dress or skirt two days running, I put it away and wear it again the next week, maybe 3 times between washes. Jeans and T shirts get the sniff test, usually 3 or 4 wearings at home, less if I'm going out. DH and I have 2 or 3 towels a week, more when the swimming pools and gym are open.

OP, in addition to the washing I presume you spend hours ironing. My clothes last at least 2 years, quite often 3-5 if they are good quality. I don't think they would last that long if I washed them after every wear. I like everything to be clean but I've got better things to do with my life than wash and iron every day.

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 17:10

Some items do actually need to be washed for longer and at higher temps. Washing at a lower temp will not always be appropriate and / or kill bacteria.

Allergy suffers generally wash at higher temps and more frequently. Also, more advisable to wash at higher temp in current circs/covid.

I understand the dog thing. People with dogs can sometimes become a bit "nose blind". I have friends with dogs and their house always always smell of dog. I am sorry if that offends some, but, the smell of dog is not to everyones taste. I have even refused to buy my ideal rural retreat house yrs ago, purely
because of the smell of dogs! I suspect OP is aware that the dog will leave smells and is eliminating them by washing frequently.

I understand people's concerns about the environment but some do need to wash clothing and other fabrics daily, at higher temps, to protect their family or due to allergies and/or underlying health issues. Some also love their dogs, just do not want their hse to smell of their lovely dogs.

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 17:21

@99victoria costs and jackets not so often, every couple of months maybe, probably because they dont come into contact with my skin....
If the kids come home from school covered in filth then obviously their coat goes in the wash but mine are less often

I don’t wash my clothes daily. I honestly don’t know how people find the time / motivation! I wash them when I think they need it.

But if you want to do it, keep doing it. Each to their own!

JustGiveMeGin · 05/03/2021 17:24

And yes @CatherineofOnandon I am acutely aware that dogs leave odours, most of which get trapped in fabrics hence the constant washing!
I love my dog to pieces but I am also quite house proud and into personal grooming . ...a match most definitely not made in heaven Grin

"sniff test" - gross!

We have a colleague in our office who always comes in smelling of dog and covered in hair! Every brew she makes has dog hair in it, from her clothing. She made a cake for Macmillan coffee morning last yr and yes, we found dog hairs in the buttercream! We all bring our own flasks now or make our own brews and do not eat her cakes. She reeks of dog and as we have a security door, ( work in a sch) cannot open it, only a tiny window, we have to suffer it.

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 17:27

@JustGiveMeGin i like you OP. 💐

CounsellorTroi · 05/03/2021 17:27

When I was working I wouldn't wear the same clothes on consecutive days, but would hang them up between wears so they got a good airing. I'd wear them at least 3 times in between washes.

PattyPan · 05/03/2021 17:31

@CatherineofOnandon sounds like your colleague needs a lint roller

CatherineofOnandon · 05/03/2021 17:37

@PattyPan yes, and some Persil.

Abraxan · 05/03/2021 17:42

How on earth do you have the time to fit in 2-3 loads of washing and drying each day?
