To think that if NHS staff get a 1% pay rise that is nothing but an insult?

Given the joke of a pay rise given over the last 3 years, well below inflation in real terms anyway but where the Government also out and out lied by failing to mention that you'd drop an increment step to get your pay rise and now this after all the NHS have done in the last year!!! A decade capped at 1% before the 3 year review and now they want to send us right back to 1%
Absolutely disgusted!

@nosyupnorth maybe others didn’t work their arse during the pandemic and have got a pay rise in the last decade Confused

1Morewineplease · 04/03/2021 22:58

The public sector will always be an easy target by which to get away with treating badly.
At least NHS staff got a clap!

LittleGreenGoblin · 04/03/2021 22:59

@nosyupnorth

it's 1% more than many other people will get

it's a shame those nhs staff who have gone above and beyond in the pandemic can't be better rewarded, but it would be absurd to extend that to every single person in the NHS plenty of whom will have seen the work stay the same or be reduced. and how on earth would they fund more generous rises when the country is going into massive debt keeping the furloughed population on partial pay plus all the other costs of the pandemic

Not sure I agree with this. In my Trust, most people with spare capacity were at least partially redeployed in order to assist departments that were snowed under. And even if it were true, why should the front like staff get a pay cut because some other departments were quieter?

I understand that COVID has put the country in a difficult financial system but we are essentially giving pay cuts to those who have been on the front line and have been the poster boys and girls of the pandemic.
(I realise other key workers have worked just as hard but that's not what the thread is about)

OhWhyNot · 04/03/2021 23:04

Well we got free coffee

It’s a slap in the face all those hours overtime unpaid all the horrendous stress all the extra added work

But I’m not surprised

justsayso · 04/03/2021 23:11

It's always the front line staff that get shat on. I remember the pay deal, and the smaller wage packet I now get because of it! Thanks Tories. I can't believe they're not giving some gesture after all of this.

TheKeatingFive · 04/03/2021 23:12

I think a lot of people who seem to think lockdowns are cost free are going to be in for a shock over the next few years.

This is just the beginning of the long-term consequences

This.

You can’t just shut down vast swathes of the revenue producing economy and expect no impact on public services. And I totally agree that this is just the beginning. It’s going to be brutal for the next few years at least.

frasersmummy · 04/03/2021 23:14

I think it's a matter of perspective. We all know there are doctors and nurses working dangerously long hours at the best of times, running about mad, doing everything In their power to look after our loved ones

But we also all know there are people at the top taking a huge salary while sitting behind a desk 9-5

We've all seen rammed icu depts. But equally we have all seen staff dancing in empty hospitals

So it seems there is a huge disparagy..how do you make salary rises fair?? Dunno but someone somewhere is paid to work this out.

CherryPieface · 04/03/2021 23:17

Absolutely disgusting - I thought one of the only benefits of the pandemic was that key workers would finally be recognised for their value. So very sad this hasn’t happened.

OliverBabish · 04/03/2021 23:17

Lots of my nursing friends have gone private for the £ and I probably will too at some point. I feel a sense of duty to help maintain a public service but my workload, the amount of stress I feel and sacrifice to my own well-being... it’s a lot. And I need to start thinking about earning better for my children’s sake too.

grammarwoes · 04/03/2021 23:18

Yes and no. The huge debt has to be paid back somehow and at least NHS staff haven't had to worry about being out of work in the past year like many in other sectors have had to.
If there's no money in the pot, then a 1% pay rise is pretty good.

Vivana · 04/03/2021 23:19

It's disgusting as well care assistants in care homes get nmw and have to still do long shifts in full ppe and caring for residents with covid. All front line keyworkers should get a pay rise. Carers still give meds, change cathaters and do personal care. We all deserve a good pay but sadly government does not care and care home company's get away with bad pay. Yes I dideave that care job and got another job with better pay and working conditions.

awishes · 04/03/2021 23:19

It's not just people at the top earning too much and doing very little! There should be a separate pay scale for medical staff and support staff. Would be easier then to reward (is pay a decent salary) one rather than all.
doctor starting salary after 6 years training and horrendous debt £28k. Who would do it?

Pomegranatespompom · 04/03/2021 23:20

I don’t think nhs staff should feel grateful for working in horrendous and stressful conditions. A fair few would have resigned if they didn’t feel such a sense of duty including to colleagues.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 04/03/2021 23:25

Wowzers. 1%!

I'll try not to spend the extra 75p I'll earn per shift too quick Hmm

Ermidunno · 04/03/2021 23:26

I wonder if I should feel grateful that I caught Covid at work and now have long Covid leaving me unable to work? Many of my colleague are the same across the U.K., some are now having to leave the profession. Others who are not NHS but work for outsourced services fulfilling NHS contracts aren’t getting any sick pay other than SSP. Some have lost their partners after bringing Covid home from the wards. I know we have all lost something but frontline NHS staff have been most at risk and have been exposed to horrific conditions and a 1% rise is a kick in the teeth when MPs continue to give themselves massive pay rise and award massive profit contracts to their mates. If they were wiser in this they could afford a pay rise for the NHS or a bonus for frontline staff.

adeleh · 04/03/2021 23:26

I absolutely agree.

And I truly wonder why nobody seems to give a shit about £22 billion going on a Track and Trace system that never materialised. It’s taking the piss. You can see how they keep getting away with it though. People move on seamlessly and then say NHS workers can’t have a pay rise because there’s no money.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/03/2021 23:26

Not great - but other public sector workers, Teachers, Police not getting anything.
And many without the security of a public sector role likely to become unemployed - apart from care home workers, many on NMW.

willstarttomorrow · 04/03/2021 23:27

There is no money and as soon as they announced all the bail out and furlough all of us in the public sector knew we would face pay cuts to fund it. I am not NHS anymore as I left nursing to become a child protection social worker, we do not even get the clap! But seriously, in the last 15 years my pay has basically been cut by over 20% due to pay freezes, inflation and changes in pension contributions. Obviously as I am frequently tokd I am lucky to have a job (although my level of qualification would have far higher reward in the private sector, choice I made) so should shut up and put up.

EL8888 · 04/03/2021 23:28

@Pomegranatespompom for clarity l wasn’t grateful about my fiancé catching COVID at work and then giving it to me. People love to use the “grateful” word with the NHS and it’s frustrating

adeleh · 04/03/2021 23:29

They’ve also spent £200 billion on Brexit, after promising us that we’d be £350 million a week better off.

Sparklynewname · 04/03/2021 23:39

We didn’t even get a badge.
I didn’t get any free coffee because I was working too bloody hard to leave ITU to go and get one.
Thanks Boris

Chickydoo · 04/03/2021 23:39

YANBU

areyoumeop · 04/03/2021 23:46

It is disgusting, as is the pay of lots of other key workers. As for the additional tax required to fund extra pay, most Uk taxpayers would not want to pay any more and will also happily keep spending their money with companies who negotiate their voluntary donation to the Treasury

adeleh · 04/03/2021 23:51

And will keep happily voting in those who will never make these people pay tax, because they do very well out of the status quo.

ElephantsNest · 04/03/2021 23:55

Maybe we should strike for the NHS. I’d pay more tax to enable a better pay rise than this for front line workers.
