AIBU to consider booking a holiday abroad for august?

What do you all think? Have any of you booked a holiday abroad for this year? We are looking at Jet2 holidays and have to pay a minimal deposit. By the end of may when we have to pay the full amount could we be be in a better position to know if it will go ahead? Just feel like I need something to look forward to, but just don't know if I should do it.

I would but DH says he’s not too excited about it this and would prefer to wait until next year .

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/03/2021 18:35

Even I am not that optimistic anymore. It's not just situation in UK which has to be considered. Some countries are now having horrible spiies going into strong lockdowns etc. Who knows how it will be in summer.

But I feel you. I would bloody love to, but I got optimistic before and now am waiting for a refund🙄

TravellingSpoon · 03/03/2021 18:44

Im not optimistic either. I was until yesterday when they extended the furlough scheme.

Bookriddle · 03/03/2021 18:46

My wife has booked a month home back to her home country in July, she has told me she is going regardless, our little one will be 1 and half by then and her mum has yet to meet her in person!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/03/2021 18:52

No, too much is still uncertain, quarantine changes, the virus can travel if borders are open etc.

Would rather wait until it’s much safer and things are back to normal

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 03/03/2021 18:53

I’ve booked for June - Think I was little optimistic that day!

NoMackerelInSwindon · 03/03/2021 18:55

@TravellingSpoon

Im not optimistic either. I was until yesterday when they extended the furlough scheme.
Don't read too much into that. The government are not expecting to pay it all out now. It is to increase confidence and many firms are paying back the support packages mine included.
peak2021 · 03/03/2021 18:56

I think it may depend on the country. Be prepared to lose some money as by May you could be certain about domestic travel, but not about visiting other countries, many of whom have vaccinated fewer people.

Parker231 · 03/03/2021 18:57

I’m waiting to see which countries and airlines want a vaccine passport. Don’t want to book until we’ve had our vaccines.

Magnificentmug12 · 03/03/2021 18:58

The furlough scheme is nothing to do with it and is only in place to help business and cut redundancies!

BLACKTUESDAY1 · 03/03/2021 19:00

Re vaccine passports. What about travelling with kids? The adults will be vacvinated but kids won't be.

Theseptemberissues · 03/03/2021 19:04

Booked to go to Greece in July -will just move it if not able to fly. I need something to look forward to!

PurBal · 03/03/2021 19:06

Depends where. Where my family lives they are likely to keep the borders closed until 2022 and vaccination roll out not due to be completed until 2023. I'm optimistic it might change. But still think 2021 is unlikely.

Tal45 · 03/03/2021 19:08

I have Spain booked for the summer, I went last summer so I'm hoping they'll want people to go again this year. I may have had both jabs by then fingers crossed.

Rainbowqueeen · 03/03/2021 19:12

No.
If you really want a holiday I would either book locally, choose something where you can get a full refund or make a plan but book last minute.
Leisure travel is really uncertain, has been a massive spreader of the virus and will be slow to reopen.

tinytemper66 · 03/03/2021 19:12

I have a holiday that was booked for last August and have moved it to this August to Sorrento. Not sure what will happen. Need to pay the balance by the end of May.

starfro · 03/03/2021 19:14

No. I think August foreign holidays will be very busy and popular.

Squidthing · 03/03/2021 19:16

We've got France booked in August, but it was based on vouchers for the places we missed out on last year. We had to use them up within 18 months of the original booking. We've booked Channel tunnel tickets as well but fully flexible. I'm hoping the French get their act together on the vaccine side, but at moment I'd say 50:50 chance of going and as insurance we've got a week booked on Airbnb in the UK for the same week so we don't end up missing out entirely this year if we can't get to France.

OrangeBananaFish · 03/03/2021 19:20

We went to France for 2 weeks in August 2020 and are fairly optimistic we might be able to go again this year. However, I am not booking anything until I know that for certain I won't have to be quarantined in a hotel on the way back to the UK (or into France)

Some countries will need our tourism, also some industries within the UK need us to go on holiday so there could be a chance, but it could happen I suppose. However, I think holidays were easier in 2020 than they will be in 2021.

SorrelForbes · 03/03/2021 19:24

We've booked a week in Portugal for mid August. The flights are fully changeable up to 14 days prior to travel and the accommodation can be cancelled or moved without penalty up to mid July. Doesn't seem a risk to me!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2021 19:24

I had a foreign holiday booked for August and have put it off til next year. Don’t think it’ll be happening - could be proved wrong of course!

Part of the reason I cancelled is I don’t want to gamble on it - UK holidays are selling out, and I don’t want to be left with nothing if foreign holidays don’t happen and I don’t have a UK booking.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2021 19:25

Also I’ll be vaxxed by then but the kids won’t!

EileenGC · 03/03/2021 19:25

I am optimistic holidays will go ahead this summer, but would only book fully refundable accommodation now, and flights 1-2 weeks before, so I can gauge what the quarantine or testing regulations look like before committing to the holiday.

I would never pay a deposit for a holiday though, regardless. Holidays are booked when I have the money in full and can afford to write it off should something happen, coronavirus or not.

PinkiOcelot · 03/03/2021 19:33

I would absolutely love a holiday abroad but don’t think it’s going to happen this year.
For 1, I couldn’t afford £120x2 each way for COVID tests and 2, I can’t isolate at home for 10 days on return. If all of that is still in place of course. And if the place we went to was then added to red list, I couldn’t afford £1750++ to isolate in a hotel.

Justcallmebebes · 03/03/2021 19:58

Not this year. Better safe than sorry. Hopefully get a break in the UK tho
