AIBU to consider booking a holiday abroad for august?

What do you all think? Have any of you booked a holiday abroad for this year? We are looking at Jet2 holidays and have to pay a minimal deposit. By the end of may when we have to pay the full amount could we be be in a better position to know if it will go ahead? Just feel like I need something to look forward to, but just don't know if I should do it.

Care to explain @Chewingle or are you staying ignorant?

Unmellowbirds · 04/03/2021 12:21

We moved our holiday from last year to this year. Just about to move it back to next year.

We'd love to go but can't see both of us being vaccinated by then and would feel a bit irresponsible going, even if we could. Also feel it's easier to manage the children's expectations from this stage.

We are going to try and book a second week away for May half term next year though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2021 12:23

Moved our honeymoon. From lady may to this may and now moved to end of June

We will keep moving flights if we have to

I hope to go. But who knows

It takes “ONE” person

So presumably you are holding out for ZERO cases? Covid to be completely eradicated?

Good luck with that

malificent7 · 04/03/2021 12:27

Weve booked a Greek island and we can move dates to whenever if Covid prevents us from travelling on specific dates.

ThrowingAShellstrop · 04/03/2021 12:29

Nope not at all @Chewingle. You’ve ignored all my other points to pick at this one. Like I said it’s a bigger picture. For safer travel between countries, there needs to be a higher vaccination rate abroad and a higher rate of people in the UK having had both doses of the vaccination (and consequently boosters if needed). Vaccination passports will most likely be needed amongst other conditions I already explained in my other posts. Next year will more than likely be fine, this year nothing is in place to enable safe travel. Try having a read of my posts again.

ThrowingAShellstrop · 04/03/2021 12:31

And FWIW COVID isn’t going to be eradicated. If you think that is ever going to be the case, you’ve got more work to do than I realised.

willstarttomorrow · 04/03/2021 12:32

We are booked but nothing that cannot be moved (again) for free, has been reserved but not paid for and can be cancelled. We also have a few £10 flights doted about that we are happy to take the chance on if they are not cancelled and refunded. It is a risk but a calculated one.

I am not paying extortionate UK prices for a UK break, which also could be cancelled due to covid. It never feels like a proper holiday just more of a short trip. Entry to attractions adds up quickly and it is usually poor value for money. It feels we are always having to travel in traffic to get to something and days have to be planned, often indoors, and there is less to do and fewer quality restaurants than the city and its surrounding area we live in. It just feels regimented, not relaxing at all and a huge waste of money when we realise no one has had a particularly great time.

We got abroad last summer and oct half term and it was lovely to have some sun, views and wander aimlessly. We hope to be able to go again this August but I understand there is no garantee so have not spent any money I cannot afford to lose.

minniemoocher · 04/03/2021 12:39

We are waiting until nearer the time but have pencilled in dates at work, early July

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/03/2021 12:40

What’s zero Covid got to do with going abroad in the summer?Confused.

Nowhere in Europe has got, or is heading for zero Covid, including the U.K..

If travel opens up too soon or incorrectly Covid cases will rocket again.

I’ll respond in early June When I’m on the beach in turkey with my two children And if I’m not, I have full covid plus cover. So no loss.

I’ve booked a week in UK self catering for august so we will have a holiday by hook or by crook!

ThrowingAShellstrop · 04/03/2021 12:57

We have a UK holiday booked at the end of July @Chewingle. It’s just holidays abroad that I find a bit a previous.

All I can do is hope beyond all hope, that your actions and others that just can’t wait a few more months, won’t give us a winter like the one we’ve just had, or indeed a worse one.

RunnerDown · 04/03/2021 17:38

@Chewingle

It makes so sense that winter was bad because of summer holidays.

Most people had returned from their holidays by end of august.

Covid doesn’t lie in wait for weeks on end to then contaminate people. There was no peak in summer.

Ever heard of exponential growth. The numbers are low for a fairly long period of time, then when we reach a certain amount it takes off. In Scotland the numbers were very low over summer - when they started to rise again it was found that new strains had been imported from Europe www.cogconsortium.uk/two-new-reports-to-sage-on-the-genomic-analysis-of-epidemic-waves-of-covid-19-in-scotland-and-wales/
wonderstuff · 04/03/2021 17:44

We have booked for August a trip to the states, i think that the vaccine programs both sides of the Atlantic mean it's reasonable to assume we'll be able to go. Everything I've booked though can be cancelled or moved to next year and I'm fully prepared to cancel if needed.

I don't want to miss out on flights being reasonably priced/available I think things are likely to get much more expensive next summer.

SmoggieC · 04/03/2021 18:14

I've got a hen booked in Spain in June, private villa, others all keen to go still, I'm not so sure :(

AllesAusLiebe · 04/03/2021 18:31

Depends where you are planning to travel I think. I'd love to think that we could get away this year, but I'm waiting to see what the situation is with the borders and these vaccine passports first.

Thestreets · 04/03/2021 18:45

I've booked 2 weeks in Mexico - can't wait!

hamstersarse · 04/03/2021 18:49

Last year's holiday is now in July - think it will happen as where we are going just want a negative test

Also got one booked for the end of May - again, they just want a negative test

Most of the rest of the world is open - particularly tourist areas. The UK is an anomaly at the moment - with the harshest restrictions!

Parker231 · 04/03/2021 18:51

More airlines are pushing for a vaccine passport in order to reopen travel.

Avidreader12 · 04/03/2021 18:55

Last minute deal prices will be even lower. Not sure if this will be true a lot of travel companies will be trying to recoup the cost of lost business I expect holidays will be massively inflated if you compare to pre Covid.

NeedWineNow · 04/03/2021 18:57

We moved Greece from last year to this at the end of August. Balance payable in May. DH will have had both his vaccine jabs by the middle of May and I will have had my first one so we're keeping everything crossed. We're already booked for next June anyway. Everything refundable so we'll see.

Hairbrush123 · 04/03/2021 21:06

I might be a tad optimistic here but I would love to visit Chicago in July Blush their (US) vaccination programme is better than any other country in Europe (well except ours). Hopefully they reopen their borders soon. I obviously only want to go if it’s safe to do so

Littlemissweepy · 04/03/2021 21:17

Holiday already booked for late June, rescheduled from last Summer. I certainly hope to be going. Will be first dose vaccinated, all the airline and receiving country need is a negative test. Flying direct to a country that’s vaccination rate is on a par with the UKs. Obviously if Govt say non essential foreign travel is not allowed we’ll move it (again) but am very clinging to hope we’ll be on that bloody plane.

willstarttomorrow · 04/03/2021 21:30

Flights for August have recently gone up a lot in price if you look at skyscanner. I think a lot of people are hoping to get away. We have had flights booked with easyjet in 2019 which we have been able to move to 2020 dates then 2021 several times and just pay any difference in fare, or if they cancelled just move at no cost. We also fly with wizz a lot and you can pay a small premium for flexibòle booking at the moment. In fact, they add 20% if you take credit when they cancel so I have £100s in flight credit from them over the last year.

Angrymum22 · 04/03/2021 22:17

I suppose if people are prepared to quarantine in hotels on their return then overseas travel would be ok. It will certainly be a massive boost for any hotel chains involved. God now they’ve lost so much money over the last 12 mnths. I doubt many people would be willing to shell out for the cost of quarantine though.
Perhaps vaccinated adult travel will be ok but since under 16yr olds are not able to have the vaccine yet it may be very limiting. It would only take one child to pick up a new resistant strain in August and return to school in September to put us back into status covidus again just in time for another lockdown Christmas.
So many billions of pounds invested in a vaccination programme and keeping the country afloat, totally wasted so that some 7 yr old can go to the Costas this summer.
I really do wonder what the combined brain cell of all these posters is thinking of.
