AIBU to consider booking a holiday abroad for august?

What do you all think? Have any of you booked a holiday abroad for this year? We are looking at Jet2 holidays and have to pay a minimal deposit. By the end of may when we have to pay the full amount could we be be in a better position to know if it will go ahead? Just feel like I need something to look forward to, but just don't know if I should do it.

we will look to book as soon as the country we are going to to go drops its 2 week hotel quarantine. No holiday is worth that. At all.

Aprilx · 03/03/2021 20:03

I have a holiday booked for September, but I booked it last September. I wouldn’t be booking anything for August / September at the moment.

Daphnise · 03/03/2021 20:06

Not a good idea.

But you'll find out. And it will cost you.

Pootle40 · 03/03/2021 20:06

So long as you can cancel / reschedule I'd totally go for it. There needs to be some optimists out there

Pootle40 · 03/03/2021 20:07

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Also I’ll be vaxxed by then but the kids won’t!
Kids may never be vaccinated Confused

We have flights carried forward from last year for mid August - changeable up to 14 days in advance , and a deposit on a villa £100 for each family- refundable or changeable up to 30 days in advance.

Haven't a clue if we're going or not - we live in Scotland where rules are generally stricter than England - will decide before the 30 days for the villa what we're going to do.

Book if you want - an Island might be a safer bet - but be aware there may be additional costs because of covid testing if you get to go.

Foreign travel last year is one of the reasons we had a difficult winter. I will be staying at home because I feel that’s the responsible thing to do. Would rather have things staying open here with no more lockdowns than have a fortnight in the sun. I can wait till next year

I have booked a holiday to Cape Verde in July. Booked with Tui. They will cancel it and refund if it remains on the Red list, we have to quarantine when we get there or when we get home.

On that basis they will either give you 20% off a different holiday or a refund. So I am ok with that.

I have booked Mauritius for October and New York for September. Both have been cancelled before and I have received refunds for my previous bookings.

idontlikealdi · 03/03/2021 20:27

I've cancelled our France holiday and booked two weeks in U.K. instead, I had a feeling everywhere here would be booked
Very soon and don't want to nit go anywhere. We need to get out of this house!

confusedbeyond · 03/03/2021 20:31

Jet2 cancelled our August holiday because they've had to drop some flights due to covid. So I'm giving up and won't now book anything abroad til 2022, if not 23!

Can you tell me where that was to please @confusedbeyond ?

If you can cope with the disappointment of potentially not being able to go and can afford to potentially wait for a refund then go for it. I wish I had the balls to book something but after the hassle of trying to get a refund for 2 holidays booked in 2019 for April and October 2020 I am too chicken to even think about going anywhere now 😢

confusedbeyond · 03/03/2021 20:45

It was to Kos, there was a choice of Tuesday or Saturday flights if I remember correctly, they cancelled the Tuesday flights and kept the saturday ones only.

mikejardine · 03/03/2021 21:40

There has been a lot of talk about vaccine passports, if these become a requirement for holiday destinations as expected for this year then only adults will be able to go abroad I guess?

Icequeen01 · 03/03/2021 22:15

@tinytemper66

I have a holiday that was booked for last August and have moved it to this August to Sorrento. Not sure what will happen. Need to pay the balance by the end of May.
We did the same as also had a holiday booked to Sorrento last year which we moved to this year. We have just moved it again to next year. I'm not optimistic for this year so we have booked a UK holiday for this year instead.
Figgygal · 03/03/2021 22:17

Not a chance I would
Even if you can go it’s likely restrictions and masks will be in place - not a holiday I’d want to go on

I totally agree.

Especially when you consider that less affluent areas are hit harder - people less likely to have gone abroad.

Travelling abroad in the middle of a global pandemic strikes of 'I'm alright Jack.'

MessagesKeepGettingClearer · 03/03/2021 23:25

YABU. Most countries are way behind the UK with their vaccination programmes. Therefore even if the UK allows international travel (which it shouldn't imo) I suspect most countries wont allow flights and there'll be a costly isolation stay at the end of your visit.

It's not worth it. We aren't out if the woods yet. The last thing we want is another variant coming into the country. I'd suggest booking somewhere in the UK.

SunscreenCentral · 04/03/2021 00:06

I had booked France for 5 weeks in July/Aug. I cancelled recently.

Got my money back but I’d paid up the whole lot and would rather the money resting in my account than a company’s for a year -so I got it back.
No hols in France this year 😭

tinytemper66 · 04/03/2021 10:40

This is something I need to think about. I do wonder whether I will want to go to Sorrento in 2022 though when I should have gone in 2020. I am just hopeful for a few mid week trips to London this year so I can meet my sister etc

rookiemere · 04/03/2021 10:45

@tinytemper66 yes I'm already over a certain holiday that has been rescheduled 3 times. It's a family group holiday last week of June in UK though so we might be able to go this time, if not I'm going to suggest we take the money and look for something else as I really don't fancy going in Summer 2022 which is next available slot.

We went to Sorrento in the October break a few years ago. It was still lovely and warm, but not overly hot for sight seeing if that time of year is an option?

Graciebobcat · 04/03/2021 10:52

I'd say go for it if they have a good cancellation policy. I've booked an AirBNB after things open up in late spring in the UK. August overseas should be fine, but I'd only book it if you are going to get your money back. We're hoping to go to France in August, was booked in 2019. The older members of the party will have had both vaccinations by then, and DH and I will likely have had at least one jab. The risks seem minimal. Dates can be moved if necessary though.

ineedaholidayandwine · 04/03/2021 10:55

I'm optimistic of going but won't be booking until last minute so i know how the 'red list' is looking.
I've been vaccinated and happy to pay for tests if needed, likewise happy to wear masks which i assume will still be required.
I think if you book now travel insurance would be void, while the travel firm might give Covid cover for changes/cancellations, you'd still need insurance incase you got injured or robbed etc, worth checking that.

Bluntness100 · 04/03/2021 10:56

Honestly I’d just see how it pans out and do a last minute deal. Prices will likely be even lower.

Chewingle · 04/03/2021 10:57
