To ask if you eat meals you'd never feed to guests but love?

So, I adore this meal which is (very) broadly speaking a sausage cassorole, but is just sliced cooked Sausages and baked beans, mixed with gravy topped with sliced boiled potatoes with a bit of thicker gravy on top of them and cooked in thr oven for at least half an hour. It's soooooo good, proper comfort food. But I would never serve it to guests! Do you eat things you'd be too embarrassed to serve to guests but really like it yourself?

I love lambs kidneys, but would never serve offal to anyone - not through embarrassment but because so many people don't like it (or don't like the thought of it).

Wendyhause · 03/03/2021 17:27

So are you saying the baked bean sauce and gravy get mixed together?

Serin · 03/03/2021 17:27

Sliced potatoes, layered with onion and bacon and cooked in the oven for a good 90mins. Serve with bread and proper butter. Heaven.

kittlesticks · 03/03/2021 17:30

Like the poster above I probably something like liver. I love it although you have to be careful not to over cook it.
Most of my friends wouldn't like it.
We obviously haven't had people over for a meal in ages. I think when we can do that again it will be family for a nice big roast.

Etinox · 03/03/2021 17:30

Corned beef hash, stovies, south london chicken and chips from a box, Philadelphia on dark chocolate digestives are private foods.
🤦🏻‍♀️😳

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2021 17:33

Full guests or close family guests?
Some of our camping meals we would never serve to actual guests, but do cook when camping with family

One favourite is flavoured rice (uncle Benz pouches) with chorizo, sweetcorn and peppers all cooked together in a pan. Sometimes chicken instead of chorizo. We call it Cheats Jambalaya.

Wendyhause · 03/03/2021 17:33

I would not be ashamed to serve that to guests but I only know common people. I do not let pretentious or posh folk across my threshold.Smile

It sounds delicious.

4amWitchingHour · 03/03/2021 17:34

Eggy rice - rice cooked so it's almost overdone, add misc cooked veggies and an egg then fry til the egg is cooked through. It's not egg fried rice, it's a big mushy comforty mess. I don't make this for anyone except me!!

Exhausted4ever · 03/03/2021 17:35

Yeah I've got to say I'd bork at being served offal. Though I might love it as I've never tried it.

@Wendyhause yep. I know its a sin but it's so good

@Serin that sounds lush

@Etinox what's a stovie?

devildeepbluesea · 03/03/2021 17:36

So many things.

Brains faggots. I'm from a place where faggots are made properly and cooked fresh, but you can't beat a Brains faggot with all the yummy gravy.

DD's favourite: sausagey pasta. Chopped up sausages, veg in a tomato and garlic sauce, with pasta.

Egg and chips.

Minced beef with onions and carrots. Sounds so boring, but if slow cooked for hours it's amazing, served with mash and peas.

Exhausted4ever · 03/03/2021 17:37

@Aroundtheworldin80moves full guests. Family guests would get served it. That sounds like a good idea especially for camping

@Wendyhause I'd serve it too!

@4amWitchingHour doesn't actually sound bad. Do you add soya sauce?

actiongirl1978 · 03/03/2021 17:38

Chickpea curry - a tin of chopped Tom's, a tin of chickpeas, a tin of tuna, three bits of frozen spinach, curry powder. Simmer. Spoon into mouth whilst mindlessly watching TV.

Exhausted4ever · 03/03/2021 17:39

@devildeepbluesea I can't bring myself to eat faggots though I had them as a kid. I love egg and chips. The Mince sounds good too

A cheesy tuna bake which is just basically tinned tuna in a cheese sauce with crisps on top. Having said that I did give it to my dad once, but he's not a real guest!

buttcrackmcheese · 03/03/2021 17:40

Chips, fried egg & beans

Exhausted4ever · 03/03/2021 17:40

@actiongirl1978 I could get behind that, but without the Tuna

@Exhausted4ever a stew made with leftovers.
Not pretty but delicious

Lurkingforawhile · 03/03/2021 17:41

@Aroundtheworldin80moves which Uncle Ben's pouch do you use? Tilda they used to do a jambalaya or peri peri rice which I just used to add a few things to, but they don't anymore

Poppins17 · 03/03/2021 17:43

Yes, I love pasta mixed with shop bought BBQ sauce and cheese.

I also love corned beef stew which I guess you could serve to guests but I think a lot would turn their noses up at it... my DH isn’t a fan... potatoes cubed with onion boiled in water, chopped up tinned corned beef and gravy granules - yummy!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2021 17:44

The Mexican one, or the Spicy Mexican if no children or we are doing a double batch in two pans. (They like their food slightly milder than us).

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 03/03/2021 17:45

Spam sandwich with ketchup. White bread.

Lovelydovey · 03/03/2021 17:46

Tinned macaroni cheese

ConkerBonkers · 03/03/2021 17:47

Serin...I am sure yours is an Irish dish called pernaculty

PlayingTheDevilsAvocado · 03/03/2021 17:47

Pasta with just olive oil and salt. Lots of it.

Noornie · 03/03/2021 17:49

It’s grim I can accept but something from my childhood I remember my mum making and now it’s real comfort food for me!

Tinned new potatoes, sliced up and in a frying pan. Add anything you have around, best combo is sliced hot dog sausages, onions, and peppers and fry the whole lot up together. Add a huge handful of cheese and mix it all up so it’s all a cheesy mess and serve.

It looks awful, it won’t win any taste awards but oh my god I love it Grin
