So, I adore this meal which is (very) broadly speaking a sausage cassorole, but is just sliced cooked Sausages and baked beans, mixed with gravy topped with sliced boiled potatoes with a bit of thicker gravy on top of them and cooked in thr oven for at least half an hour. It's soooooo good, proper comfort food. But I would never serve it to guests! Do you eat things you'd be too embarrassed to serve to guests but really like it yourself?

Smoked cod liver. It's delectable and people would probably eat it if I called it something else but most people loathe cod liver oil by default and can not grasp the idea that the texture of the liver is soft and spreadable.

One of my absolute favourite meals is pasta, peas and sweetcorn, with loads of grated cheddar mixed through and lots of salt and pepper. No sauce. Apparently my mum used to make it when we were skint and had no food in.

My grim thing I used to like to eat was chicken flavour super noodles cooked too long so they were really soft and the water reduced to a sort of sauce. Into a bowl, grated cheese on top, then a big dollop or three of shop bought coleslaw.

There's a reason I've been low carb the last 3 years Blush I somehow ate shit like that for years and got away with it though.

Corned beef patties. Plenty black pepper, all fried till gloriously crispy on the outside and served with baked beans. Food of the gods.

Eggy bread slathered with brown sauce.

Wotsits in a well fired morning roll, loads of butter on the roll of course.

Ohdofuckofdear · 03/03/2021 20:38

Cornedbeef and potatoe pie, tinned cornedbeef sliced and layed in a casserole dish with diced onion layered in between covered in gravy topped with mashed potatoes and the mash is topped with strong grated cheddar wack it in the oven and I serve it with baked beans and sliced white bread and butter.

It probably sounds awful but it tastes amazing.

NicelySpicy · 03/03/2021 20:39

@pepsicolagirl How do you cook the Lamb’s heart and does it smell? I love kidneys but can’t cook them at home because of the wee smell...

@EmbarrassingAdmissions where do you get the smoked cod liver from? I’m assuming a fishmonger as I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the supermarket. How do you prepare it?

LOVE this thread - so many things to try - yum!

iklboo · 03/03/2021 20:45

Spam, chips & tinned spaghetti
Egg & chips, bread & butter
Beefburger sun (see below)
Catalana - a meal my nana made up:

Chop & fry an onion
Add a tinned of chopped tomatoes
Add about 1/2 a tin of corned beef, sliced

Cook until the corned beef has 'melted' in
Crumble in a beef oxo cube & stir well

Serve with chips and cheap, white bread & butter.

It's a total family favourite on all sides but I probably wouldn't serve it to guests.

The easiest way to try it is tinned (and I've just discovered that the fancy name that I should have used is Foie de Morue Fumé ). I bought it as recently as 6 weeks ago from The Fish Society but they don't seem to have it in stock at present - only the 'plain' cod liver which is good but I prefer the smoked. They do remind you that you not only eat the liver but you use the oil in dressings or dip bread in it and it works very well.

The site gives you an idea of what it looks like and how it's used:

RiojaRose · 03/03/2021 20:56

Chips, cheese and baked beans. With lots of salt and vinegar.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 03/03/2021 20:58

For tinned, I've only eaten Icelandic smoked cod liver but the only brand that I can see that is in stock anywhere is Spanish:

Crisp sandwich with white bread, loads of butter, and a ratio of one bag of crisps per slice of bread.

Also pasta, dolmio and tuna, with cheddar melted in.

AliceSprings123 · 03/03/2021 21:22

@TonTonMacoute

I love lambs kidneys, but would never serve offal to anyone - not through embarrassment but because so many people don't like it (or don't like the thought of it).

This! I also love liver and sweetbreads.

Offal YESS! All offal. And one of my faves is tripe - you cut it into strips, saute it in olive oil, crumble a chicken stock cube into it, add chilli and garlic, then white wine, cubed potatoes, and finish with a handful of frozen peas. Food of the Offal Gods, it isStar
NigellaSeed · 03/03/2021 21:24

Tablespoon of Nutella, dry granola, frozen raspberries, stir it all up. Dessert done. It is amazing.

@OP your sausage casserole sounds great. I'd be happy to be served that. I always put baked beans in my sausage casserole but never thought to add gravy!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 03/03/2021 21:39

@Serin @Missdotty @Colouringaddict

I think it's also called pan haggerty?

ktp100 · 03/03/2021 21:39

Cooked pasta topped with tinned sweetcorn, tinned chopped tomatoes & a shit ton of salad cream.

Sounds vile, is LUSH!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 03/03/2021 21:40

Chocolate melted in the microwave, then double cream stirred in. Frozen fruit chucked in then microwaved again.

Classy? No. Delicious? Oh yes...

speakout · 03/03/2021 21:42

Chocolate melted in the microwave, then double cream stirred in. Frozen fruit chucked in then microwaved again.

That's a hot fresh ganache surely! Would impress my guests!

1Morewineplease · 03/03/2021 21:42

I LOVE Brains faggots.
In the thirty years that I've been with my husband, he's adamantly refused these splendid delicacies.
Knob.

Chocolateandamaretto · 03/03/2021 21:45

When I camp I love tinned potatoes. Would never eat them at home!

I’m also a gravy fiend and like it on pretty much any carb as a snack i.e. chips, bread, rice...preferably with lots of cheese!

Inclinedtochatter · 03/03/2021 21:46

A plate full of Ritz crackers each with a delicious blob of ham flavour Primula cheese on top

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 21:50

Chicken pot pie made with leftovers from chicken stew with dumplings, including a few cut up dumplings. This is what I'll be having on Saturday, maybe Sunday too.

Any leftovers baked in pastry really.

cannotfathom · 03/03/2021 21:50

Bloody hell OP, I'm so glad you don't serve that to guests, sounds horrific.

We love sausages beans and cheesy jacket potatoes, I wouldn't serve that at a dinner party.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 21:51

Also, fish finger sandwiches made with toast.

GrumpyHoonMain · 03/03/2021 21:51

Marscapone on fruit toast for dessert. It’s lush

ItsA1WayStreet · 03/03/2021 21:55

My sausage casserole -

Layers of sliced potatoes, onions and carrots
Poor in a tin of beans (maybe 2)
Poor in a tin of oxtail soup
Completely cover top with sausages cut into 3rds
Oven for a couple of hours with lid on
1/2 hour with lid off to brown sausages
Serve with fresh bread

Heaven

Serin · 03/03/2021 21:58

@CatOnAHotTinHoof
Yes, I add a bit of water to the casserole dish.

I have just tried the Philadelphia on a dark chocolate digestive and can confirm it's cheesecakiness!! Genius.
