To hate the word “brew”

Fancy a brew?

Makes my skin crawl. I can’t put my finger on it but it’s just an awful phrase.

Am I unhinged?

Cuppa, Brew, Sarnie, Butty, Scran, Brekkie - Hate them all.

TheJerkStore · 04/03/2021 08:47

Why can't we just use language properly?

Why can't people accept that language evolves and regional dialect is a thing?

Who are you to decide what constitutes 'proper language'?

TheJerkStore · 04/03/2021 08:48

We should celebrate these differences, not judge them.

This.

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 08:49

Bap/Barm instead of a bread roll too.
Pants instead of trousers.

I’ve lived here 2/3 of my life and it still sounds wrong to me!

DinoHat · 04/03/2021 08:50

@HeathIns see a bread roll is wrong to me too. It’s a cob!

OP posts:
HeathIns · 04/03/2021 08:52

I actually quite like ‘cob’ - A cob is a gorgeous crusty bread roll (in my world!)

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 08:54

Or a crusty cob loaf 😋

To hate the word “brew”
HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 04/03/2021 08:56

HeathIns God I want to shove that thing in my mouth.

TheJerkStore · 04/03/2021 08:56

Bap/Barm instead of a bread roll too.

I'm from Yorkshire so it's a tea cake to me but I now live in north Manchester and it's a muffin!!
I still can't get my head around that!

Hoppinggreen · 04/03/2021 08:57

It’s probably best of you avoid Manchester then

custardbear · 04/03/2021 08:57

I hate brew too

Is also hate:
Gusset
Stalk (like eyes on stalks)
Cluster

There are more ... I can't think blotted them out of my vocabulary

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 08:58

I forgot about muffin.

DinoHat · 04/03/2021 09:00

@HeathIns a muffin being? A muffin to me is a large cupcake.

OP posts:
HeathIns · 04/03/2021 09:00

Jerk
What do you call a toasted tea cake with fruit then?

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 09:01

Yes, a muffin is a big cupcake! Someone just said a bread roll is a muffin.

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 09:04

It was Jerk ! 😊

Yorkshire Bread roll: Tea cake
Manchester bread roll: Muffin

TheJerkStore · 04/03/2021 09:06

@HeathIns

Jerk What do you call a toasted tea cake with fruit then?
It's a current tea cake. If I ask for a toasted tea cake I would expect it to be plain. When I first got with DH he asked me to pick up some muffins from the shop - my response was chocolate chip or blueberry 😂😂

Where we live now the chip shop ( chippy as DH would call it) sell chip muffins - they're chip butties to me.

Language is wonderful!

CorianderBee · 04/03/2021 09:09

I just say tea... or occasionally char.

eggandonion · 04/03/2021 09:10

Chips are made into chip butties...but crisps become sandwiches.
Muffins can be American cake style, or English bread ones.

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 09:13

Language is wonderful!
It is isn’t it?!

I’d be very upset it I ordered a toasted tea cake and it arrived minus fruit! 😂

TheJerkStore · 04/03/2021 09:14

Lancashire backstone oven bottom muffins are different to a standard bread roll but muffin does appear to be a catch all term where I live.

Unless I'm in Yorkshire I make sure I specify plain!! I live less than 20 miles from where I grew up yet the use of language is so different!

Where I grew up it was ‘bap’ (soft bread roll) or ‘cob’ (crusty bread roll) Where I live now it is ‘muffin’ or ‘barm’.
TwoZeroTwoZero · 04/03/2021 09:21

I make a brew in the teapot and when it's mashed I have a cuppa. I might have a sausage sarnie or a bacon & egg butty in a breadcake with it on a morning.

HeathIns · 04/03/2021 09:21

Who knew that bread rolls could be so interesting?! 😄
I think I might have derailed the thread!
