To hate the word “brew”

Fancy a brew?

Makes my skin crawl. I can’t put my finger on it but it’s just an awful phrase.

Am I unhinged?

@Janegrey333

Re.OP:

It’s common. As is “cuppa”.
Ugh

I was going to ask what's a wrong with being common until is Saw your username.

Is there anything you're not an insufferable snob about?

ViciousJackdaw · 03/03/2021 18:01

@PizzaBreath

I hate ‘brew’, but my most hated food drink word is ‘yorkie’, I cannot bear it! Even though it’s MUCH more effort to call them yorskshire puddings. I know it’s me, I know it but I can’t stand it.
I'm with you on this. They are not even Yorkshire puddings anyway, if you asked me if I wanted a Yorkie, I'd expect to be given a chocolate bar!

Also see 'juice' instead of 'cordial/squash', 'teddy' when it is actually a bunny or monkey stuffed toy and 'been' when it should be 'being'. Using the incorrect word can cause problems.

phoenixrosehere · 03/03/2021 18:03

Don’t use brew nor cuppa, but not that bothered that it makes me cringe. There are very few words that do.

Pollypudding · 03/03/2021 18:12

@Clarice99

I don't like brew. Ditto cuppa. But the one that really sets my teeth on edge is libation.
If someone offered me a libation I would definitely expect alcohol! I suppose strictly speaking brewing would be to do with beer so maybe we should be saying- would you like an infusion Camellia sinensis my dear? ( had to google that!)
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 03/03/2021 18:15

I'm southern and say both.

SwedishEdith · 03/03/2021 18:21

I hate brew as well although sometimes message it to get one brought up to me. Cuppa also horrible.

Absolutely hate biccy, natter, munch, piccie (sic). Probably loads more. I hate them so much I've started doing it "ironically" to everything in the house now and can't stop.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/03/2021 18:25

I wouldn't use the word "brew" to describe the drink - but I would say that I was allowing the tea to brew, as in the teapot, ready to pour a mug and drink in five minutes when it has brewed.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/03/2021 18:26

If anyone if offering to make me a drink, I wouldn't be picky though Brew
or bring me Cake with it

Viviennemary · 03/03/2021 18:27

It's very chavvy. Not an expression I would use.

Grenlei · 03/03/2021 18:28

YANBU. I can't bear the word either. I don't like cuppa at all, but even that is slightly better than brew, just typing it makes me wince!

Wineandcakequeen · 03/03/2021 18:32

The word makes my skin crawl so I feel your pain. It’s tea or you’re not getting one in my house! Are you a Londoner too OP?

snowone · 03/03/2021 18:36

Don't come and live round here then.....everyone loves a good brew! We don't really do cuppas though.

roarfeckingroarr · 03/03/2021 18:37

Cuppa - twee and irritating
Brew - absolutely agree, it sounds like something brewing e.g. a nasty shit 😂

HeronLanyon · 03/03/2021 18:40

When did brew start. I really hate it.
Also don’t like ‘nutty’ or ‘cuppa’
Loathe a ‘cheeky’ or ‘naughty’ anything !

HeronLanyon · 03/03/2021 18:41

Nutty should read ‘butty’ even spellcheck doesn’t like that

QueenPaw · 03/03/2021 18:50

Perfectly normal every day word but then I'm in the grim north Hmm

fabulousspider · 03/03/2021 18:52

Hate cuppa, brew almost intolerable, tea is what should be used!!

Changethetoner · 03/03/2021 18:56

You have a rather strong reaction to someone's use of regional terms. Not everyone speaks the same way.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 03/03/2021 19:04

Agreed. Brew, Cuppa, a cheeky anything, Sarnie, butty. Ugh.

MissyB1 · 03/03/2021 19:11

Who knew there was so many snobs on here?!
I grew up in the 70s with Irish parents. Our tea was literally brewed on the gas hob, there would be a pot on there all day. I still say “brew” or “cuppa” to this day.

OhCaptain · 03/03/2021 19:13

How is it snobby not to like a word?

MissyB1 · 03/03/2021 19:13

Oh and I love a chip or bacon buttie! Tastes much better than a sandwich Grin

SuperCaliFragalistic · 03/03/2021 19:16

It's just regional dialect. I wouldn't use brew because I'm southern. I don't say cuppa because I'm not a,twat. Its tea or cup of tea here.

One word I dislike is "comfy". It's all over MN, as in "comfy pjs" and makes me hate the user so much. Use comfortable if you must but stop describing everything as comfy. I'm feeling angry just thinking about it.

gvdlyfoib · 03/03/2021 19:28

I'd rather be a chav than someone like you.

If you hate people and call them twats for using perfectly normal words then there's something wrong with you.
