To hate the word “brew”

Fancy a brew?

Makes my skin crawl. I can’t put my finger on it but it’s just an awful phrase.

Am I unhinged?

Pretty grim. Brewing surely belongs to beer. Would you like a cup of tea (or coffee) is what I say.

quarentini · 03/03/2021 16:51

Brew and scran are well used around my area.
" I'm just finishing this brew then getting ready to go for some scran " 😀

Cuppa is never used .

DinoHat · 03/03/2021 16:56

Cup of tea is fine.

I’d consider a cuppa to be tea - I’d ask if someone wanted a drink to include the possibility of coffee too.

Brew and Butty are very prevalent where I live (lancs), and completely normal.
Are ya brewin up? Yeh I’ll ‘av a butty too.

And bacon butties should have red sauce (not ketchup) if you’re a proper northerner.

DinoHat · 03/03/2021 16:57

It’s one of those things that you recognise is irrational but can’t help be irritated by.

@mistermagpie

God, 'brew', ugh.

But 'cuppa' is a million times worse.

This.

Yeh 👍🏻 Love a bit of scran too! Very popular saying around Manchester way.

Basically this thread is an anti-northern thread then? Words are regional, if you were raised in and/or live where those words are used you would use them too. Surely you only use the versions of words you do because of where you live? I really couldn’t get upset with how other people speak and totally don’t understand the attitude of “it’s how a certain type of person” speaks. It’s such a poor attitude to have.
Remember that you are better than no one but you are always as good as.

Dunairbeanat · 03/03/2021 17:08

I always say cuppa and then ask if they want tea or coffee. Never heard brew where I am (S Wales).
It's always a sandwich in our house unless it's a chip butty Grin

No and no. I'm from "the North" and I hate the words and have never used them. Try again.

x2boys · 03/03/2021 17:13

Lol @Mellonsprite I'm Greater Manchester born and bred ,but I prefer a bacon butty with brown sauce , preferably on toast with a fried egg 🤣

daisychicken · 03/03/2021 17:13

@CherryBlossomPink

Brew doesn’t bother me, but I hate the word butty - it’s a bloody sandwich! I feel your pain
Oh thank you! I've never met anyone who also hates the word butty! It makes me cringe!

I do use the word cuppa (am from the northwest - cuppa and butty (ugh) were in regular use!) and I don't mind brew but don't use it myself.

on't mind the word brew or cuppa though

ZaraW · 03/03/2021 17:16

@Janegrey333

Re.OP:

It’s common. As is “cuppa”.
Ugh

MN own Hyacinth Bucket has spoken......
Serin · 03/03/2021 17:17

Panad? Grin

Clarice99 · 03/03/2021 17:21

I don't like brew. Ditto cuppa. But the one that really sets my teeth on edge is libation.

PizzaBreath · 03/03/2021 17:24

I hate ‘brew’, but my most hated food drink word is ‘yorkie’, I cannot bear it! Even though it’s MUCH more effort to call them yorskshire puddings. I know it’s me, I know it but I can’t stand it.

Bloodypunkrockers · 03/03/2021 17:25

@LakieLady

"Cuppa" is horrid. It falls in the same category of horridness as "hubby".

I quite like "brew" though.

Horrid. Horridness

They're as bad Grin

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 03/03/2021 17:25

Brew = mash where I come from. (neighbouring county to Susie477 - Ey Up Mi Duck!)

Its just gold old-fashioned snobbery tbh. "Cuppa" is more of a southern thing so I don't think its just regional. Any excuse for a good look down your nose at someone about something utterly trivial.

I cannot for the life of me see what anyone would find offensive about either.

eggandonion · 03/03/2021 17:33

I'm in Ireland.
My dd1 and dd2 say cuppa, I assume they learned it from some English telly thing.
My builder was from Manchester and stopped for a brew every half hour. I started to say ginnel because of him, that annoys my dh.

Rollmopsrule · 03/03/2021 17:34

Nope I dislike it too Op. My DD picked it up from her friend. Really irks me everything she says it.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2021 17:35

Yes, I don’t like it, but I like it more than cuppa. I really hate that.

Just say tea or coffee, we aren’t living in a tv advert.

Pyewackect · 03/03/2021 17:38

Brew is northern.

CosyAcorn · 03/03/2021 17:51

Brew is a completely normal unremarkable word from where I am from (Lancashire).

Bit rubbish to hear people reacting as if our regional words are disgusting and common. Do they not teach people manners down south? 😉

DinoHat · 03/03/2021 17:57

Not an anti Notherner.... just a good old fashioned snob as pp said Grin

All in jest - as I said I know it’s irrational.
