I don't want to hear about cruise ship holidays.

My parents worked very hard, retired and like to go away on cruise ships.

For the last 15 years they have probably gone every nine months for at least a fortnight, often six weeks even did the epic round the world.

Some have been a bit miserable with norovirus and other flu type bugs. The round the world one lost it's novelty. On the whole they have really enjoyed them, the social side, the whistle stop tours, the food.

We are happy for them, their money, they worked hard, their choices.

But AIBU I don't want to hear any more about them, it's just making me angry.
I have two teens sharing a bedroom, we are working hard, our modest holiday plans were torn apart last year. I just want my kids back in school and free to see their friends.

Everytime I speak to my parents, cruises get mentioned. They've missed two during covid. First it was "wasn't it awful Australia refusing entry to the cruise ship" then worried about deposits, terms and conditions and refunds, then new dates being released, it just goes on and on.

I've said " look for a new type of holiday, you've had a good run, something different"

Their vaccination has just given them fresh fuel along with the relentless marketing from the cruise companies.

AIBU to just not want to hear anymore about bloody cruises?

My lady wife and I

Should say 'My lady wife and myself' Wine

No, actually, I is the correct pronoun to use. A good rule of thumb to check is to leave off 'my lady' and read out the sentence to see if it makes sense. It doesn't to say 'Myself + verb' so I is the correct pronoun to use. Wink

You should have seen the original version, Tatiana - that didn't even have paragraphs, so I added my onw (and missed one [blush})

Another one here from the same guy - I should have just used the link before: www.cruise.co.uk/forum/forum/cruise-chat-advice-fun/cruise-chat/22669-class-of-2011

God, yes, I bow down to your intellectual superiority! I have absolutely no concept of anything, can't at all be sarcastic, earnest people don't get it.

Carry on. It's mildly entertaining. Grin

@GreatTeaMonkey

Yanbu OP, going on and on and on about anything is boring.

My MIL went to Dubai during lockdown and was genuinely hoping this issue with the princess wouldn’t curb any future holidays there. Hmm

The in laws have been a few times and I am sick to death of hearing about it. Especially as DH and I have both been working throughout the pandemic on ITU, with covid patients whilst also trying to home school our children. I would fucking love to go on holiday. But no I just have to hear about Dubai and how bored they are. Oh and receive holiday selfies whilst I’m working. As a pp said, read the room.

I use people talking about going to Dubai as a measure of if I respect them or not.

The first one is better imo. I think he's got his demographic wrong - posh people don't cruise.

theleafandnotthetree · 03/03/2021 17:45

I don't think someone has to be an "earnest, judgemental virtue signallers and miserable asceticist" (hark you with the fancy words) to give a fuck about things other than shopping and holidaying

CruisingBob · 03/03/2021 18:07

My kids are polite but I sense aren't particularly fond of my parents. I've overheard the odd 'ok boomer' comment. They overhear the holiday talk, occasionally they get a lecture on how hard things were in the past. We invited them on a couple of our holidays when the kids were small, but the lovely National Trust cottages were not to their taste and it was just very uncomfortable. So I think we're all relieved to do our own thing.

My parents would love a child & grand children who are desperate to go on cruises, if anyone wants to apply, I'll pass on your details 😁

Because anyone who does like holidaying and shopping, naturally, that's their only interest in the whole world! Hmm

It's clear you despise your parents, Cruising, think you're superior to them, and have transferred this attitude to your kids.

I wonder if they realise how much contempt you hold them in.

You’d love us. Thomas Cook stuck us in Dubai because of the the ash cloud. We had been in the Maldives and would have loved to stay on there but they insisted that we moved to Dubai.

How anyone would voluntarily stay there God knows. Hideous architecture seemingly designed by Victoria Beckham and Albert Speer. Just ghastly.

But we are partial to a cruise...

Omg, Tricky! How dare you travel to the Maldives! There's just no excuse. You could have gone and stayed in a yurt in Devon, cycled over there. As for being partial to a cruise, you're going straight to hell.
barm87 · 03/03/2021 18:21

I zone out when I visit my mother. Just talks about people dying all the time. I don’t know who any of them are yet she talks about them like they were all my aunties!

I’d love a cruise ship story or two

theleafandnotthetree · 03/03/2021 18:22

I wouldnt have thought giving a rats arse as to whether the planet remains habitable constitutes an interest so much as a fairly fundamental worldview which most people at least pretend to share.

1Morewineplease · 03/03/2021 18:27

You say they worked very hard. They are now enjoying the fruits of their Labour.
It might rankle with you now but try and be pleased for them.
You may well be in their position one day when your children are scrabbling about for money for their children's school uniform.

If my dc were scrabbling about for my grandchildren's school uniform I would help them if I could. Is that not normal?

I do know that whatever my kids are doing when I’m retired, I won’t be sending them daily pictures of myself relaxing when they are the middle of a school run before they head into work. Nor will I choose to head off on holiday if I haven’t seen them or their family for months on end. And if they or even worse their children became seriously ill, I would support them rather than claiming I was too upset to be involved.

That was your mistake, we got to stay in Iceland thanks to the ash cloud, win win all round for us Grin

Maybe it's because I'm not English but culturally we look after & help family.

Hell or Dubai? Not much in it.

But we took sons and DGCs to the Maldives several times so they wouldn't have to listen to us going on about how nice it is.

I'll pass on the yurt.

CruisingBob · 03/03/2021 18:52

@rawalpindithelabrador I don't dispise my parents, they are a product of their times and choices.
I feel sad for myself and my kids that my parents don't value the Environment more. We don't seem to share anything with them.
They use their local community spaces for WI, walking groups and family research but news that the local Sure Start centre was closing was greeted with ' we didn't have such things, what is wrong with the park'

The pandemic has made it clear that my parents have no real interest in us but I'm sure that's not what you will hear next time you bump into them on the Aurora, we will be painted in a fake coat of wishful thinking.

My parents aren't as happy as the laughing man with the go-pro the wrong way round. They are much more insecure @Puzzledandpissedoff nailed it with that link. The sense of belonging, the snobbery, the on board spends, loyalty tiers, the cruise companies manipulate my parents and my parents love it. I've heard my parents mention everything in that piece of writing.

I can't face ringing them tonight, they are due another jab and I suspect they will get pouring over the brochures, full of how they are just about got enough points if they book a trip to not go down a tier.

Dubai has air conditioning which gives it the edge over hell.
